When we first arrived I thought we were scammed because the store front downstairs is empty and I think for sale. We were early for check in so the woman who answered the bell allowed us to leave our luggage downstairs until 2pm. Our room was spacious and clean but there was a pane of glass missing from the window blinds. Breakfast was horrible, stale bread and cut up hot dogs with sauce. I may stay again because of the location and price but its a poor excuse for a bed and breakfast.
My family was excited about our visit, based on what we'd seen on the internet. We did see reviews warning about lack of hot water, but others disputed the claims. We had two rooms, so this is based off our experiences in both: Good: friendly staff; safe location where we felt fine walking around at night; large rooms; large TV with several stations, including one in English; water & other beverages kept in a fridge accessible at all times--you pay on the honor system; small, but nice, balcony off of the common area OK: breakfast was fine, but nothing special; main areas were clean, but in corners and behind things like the side table were not; you need a key to leave & return from outside. This is a hassle when there a multiple members of your party, but you can ring a bell & bother whomever is on call to let you in; the common area by the lobby is spacious with comfortable looking furniture, but it's so warm and dimly lit we never lingered; there is artwork on the walls, but many are hanging VERY askew, as though nobody on staff cares anymore Bad: we were told there was a water pressure issue and to turn both the tap and shower on full hot to draw the hot water. We did this, and it worked a few times. Even when we started with hot, our showers quickly turned cold; The a/c is inadequate to cool the rooms. The single queen room was much better than the double queen, probably because it is smaller. We arrived in time for dinner the first night, and turned on the A/C before we left. The rooms were still hot when we returned. The double queen room was hot all night, even by the standards of our family member who is always cold. We spoke to a staff member who said it hopefully would cool off during the day & be better when we returned. Nope, because they turned it off after they cleaned! This property appears to be for sale, which may explain the issues. There are other choices at or near the same price. We will be trying the Las Vegas hotel, just down the road, the night before our flight out of Panama City.
This little guesthouse provides a decent breakfast, basic rooms and friendly staff in a good location in the modern part of Panama. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby and the area does feel safe at night, with police very visible. I would have given it a much higher rating had it not been for its only big downside - it really wasn't clean. The bathroom could certainly have done with a good scrub, particularly the dodgy looking white substance that was splattered on the shower curtain. We were also very surprised to find someone else's dusty flip flops under the bed! We are pretty chilled about that sort of thing, so it didn't bother us too much, but it may not suit many others.
We stayed in this accommodation for one night due to the reviews that we had read regarding the accommodation and the breakfast. If you follow my reviews, you will know that when I say something is good, it is. But when it is not what I expect, then I will tell it like it is. I also take into account how much was paid. First of all, the good points. Central location, good free wifi, flat screen TV, friendly staff, good air conditioning. For us, this is where it ended. We booked a "de luxe" queen room at $65 including breakfast plus taxes .Based on the rooms that we had at other hotels on this holiday, it was small, dark, dingy, and very basic. It had one double bed, an open alcove with a bar and wire hangers to hang your clothes, and a shower room. We found that you could either have a scalding shower or a cold one. Despite trying very hard to adjust the controls, it did not seem possible to have a comfortable shower. There was also a wash basin and toilet. The window was frosted glass, but no curtain, the toilet paper was the thinnest that we have ever encountered, and there were long hairs in several places around the shower room. As for the breakfast, which according to some reviews was prepared by an international chef, it was far from special as far as we were concerned. For the following 4 nights we stayed at a hotel just around the corner, and although it was about $20 per room per night more, there was just no comparison. We had a large, well decorated room, with 2 queen size beds, refrigerator, wardrobe, iron and board, flat screen TV, fabulous bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, in room safe, air conditioning and a good breakfast buffet. We feel that the Autograph Lodge was not worth what they were charging, and wonder how they could have gained the reviews that they had.
(+) The hotel is located in a safe area of Panama. You can walk outside even at midnight. There are a lot of restaurants around, especially at Via Argentina. If you like draught beer, check the place called La Rana Dorada, where you can drink 5 types of local beer. The hotel administrator speaks very good English. The walls in the dining area are occupied by various paintings. You can keep some of your goods in the fridge, for instance beer. (-) There is no hot water. I would advise to the owners to translate the breakfast menu, otherwise it is difficult to understand the lady, who is serving in the morning. Do not be afraid to pay for the hotel in advance by PayPal.
Loved this little place. The owners were always there in case we needed anything and made our stay very pleasant even when we arrived way to early to check in. The location is great to tons of restaurants and bars.
The place is wonderful. The staff is very friendly, informative, and helpful. I had a great time, nice stay, and I would definitely go back. The artwork was really nice and an art gallery is on the first floor. Another good point is that is close to many great restaurants. My only issue was the decor needs a little bit more work.
Breakfast is good. I mean when the hotel advertises having an international cook preparing breakfast and asks you about your alergies one would expect something out of this world... It is not. It is good. I booked this hotel as a few others in this part of the world for a recent trip. I selected a 'product' which could be changed/cancelled up to the usual 72 hours. I was very surprised when within the hour I received an automatic message urging me to transfer money (full payment) via Paypal. They wouldn't honour my booking until then. I contacted booking.com and was not satisfied with the answer: basically the reply was, don't worry go ahead and pay. I did but still I feel I was forced into something that had not been advertised from the begining and which is not common practice, not in Central America, not elsewhere. Together with my original booking I sent a message mentionning I'd arrive early (early checkin). That message was never answered but I did get 2 email from a travel agency associated with the hotel offering me transfers and excursions. Location is a bit awkward. It is a quiet residential area 10' away from a Metro stop. But there's nothing for a visitor in this part of Panama City. It is nice, breakfast was good, have no complaints but would not go back for the reasons mentioned.
Wonderful huge breakfast, unlike most little places where continental is toast, cereal, milk and coffee, juice. Fruit, cereal, eggs. Owners are wonderful. The rooms can be noisy however. But that all depends on what is going in the lodge as they have several rooms that all open onto the dining and common area. I hardly spent any time there, maybe two nights a few hours awake a day. Wifi available, rooms are big, a/c works, hot water works, sparse, but clean and all you need. I would definitely stay there again for my next trip, because you can't beat the value. It's half the price of a big hotel, and provides everything you need. The place doesn't accept children, so if I'm alone and staying there I can handle more noise because I don't have to deal with my kids! Haha.
First off, Angela and Luis were very nice. Luis carried both of our suitcases up and down stairs and those were very heavy! They assisted us with printing our boarding passes. Breakfast to order:eggs/toast/sausage/pancakes/coffee/fruit/juice. The wifi worked great. There was parking for two vehicles tops. No hairdryer/safe/phone/fridge/microwave Stark furnishing- especially without the advertised artwork. Computer desk with energy saving clip on desk light The room was very dark for our taste Restaurants walking distance all around Bathroom with drain in the middle. I think we got the room that might have been a garage area because it was off of the back. The garden was overgrown and looked unkempt. The nicest part appeared to be the front occupied by the owners. It was not a smoke free property-smokers were on the front balcony and cigarette packages were in the navigable portion of the backyard. Our room was stark and dark. The louvered glass windows did not inspire a sense of security.
