Holiday Inn Express Honolulu - Waikiki

Finally a work trip to Hawaii! Since I am a spire elite IHG member I alwayse look to stay in that chain first. Unfortunately the Waikiki Beach Holiday Inn was booked so I chose to stay at the Holiday Inn Express just down the street. There are some pros and cons about my stay and the hotel that leave me questioning if I chose wisely. Cons- 1. The sineage was difficult to see so I had to circle the blocks of one way streets to figure out where the place was. 2. The room was very small (king room with a ocean view). I paced it out and it ended up in the neighborhood of 200 square feet. After you put a king bed in a room that size. There is no desk to do any work, no real dresser to unpack if you are staying a while. There is hardly room to use the ironing board. DO NOT get this room thinking two people can stay in it comfortably. 2A. The bathroom is very small as well. There is no counter to place your toiletries. The TP holder even gets in the way when you are sitting on the toilet. 3. The pool closes at 6:00 PM. Yup, if you wish to use the pool or sauna, you must finish by 6:00 PM. 3A. If you are in one of the higher rooms and you want to use the pool or exercise room. You must ride the elevator down to at least the 3rd floor, then get on a second set of elevators to go back up to the 5th floor. 4. The place was under construction when I stayed there. Some of basic services that I usually get at a IHG was not avaliable - the little store that sells snacks and water was not avaliable due to construction. A fair amount of the parking was taken up due to the construction. The lobby seating area was very inadequate due to the construction. 5. Many of the parking spots in the (pay $27/day extra to park ) parking garage are small or compact. Meaning passengers typically have to get out of the vehicle before you shimmy your way into one of the spots. Pros - 1. The room was clean.... but shouldn't that be expected wherever you stay? 2. There is a parking garage - street parking is difficult to find here! 3. The ocean view rooms have great views! 4. It's not that far of a walk to food, shopping and clubs. The beach is a decent stroll, but totally doable. Long and short of it, if I were to come back, I would look into maybe staying in a suite. I may even explore staying someplace else.

When we were there the hotel was obviously still in refurbishment. The place looked like a building site when we got there and improved from there. The front desk seems as though it is almost out on the pavement. I was completely won over by the delightful Front desk staff about whom I have nothing but praise. They were great fun and have a wonderful attitude to their guests. The room was tiny. I did not care. I am not in Hawaii to sit in my armchair and concern myself about the price of handbags at Louis Vuiton. How people with their vast suitcases cope I do not know, and as I long since learned to travel light, it is, Thank God, no concern of mine. There was an Air Conditioner that made rather a noise, so we stopped that and opened the window and managed perfectly. We slept well. There was a coffee pod machine and we managed to use it to make tea in the afternoon when we got back from the beach. The bed filled the room - but it is a bedroom not a ballroom. We had a fair view - although the hotel that we were assigned the second time (we left to go to the Big Island for a few days. Breakfast was pretty good. For some reason now, it seems impossible for them to serve Orange Juice rather than Orange flavoured water, and don't be late as the door are slammed shut at 10.00am sharp. There were two real niggles. On one occasion the room was still not cleaned at 4.45. and on another at about 3.30. We were irritated as we wanted to nap as we were still recovering from jet lag after flying half way around the world.. As soon as we were asleep, the woman came banging on the door. Whoever heard of a room cleaned so late? On the first occasion, the Front Desk had to plead Housekeeping (a law unto itself seemingly) to clean our room. As she had been in other rooms on the floor before 11 - we found this really poor. Car parking is ridiculously expensive. No concession is made to hotel guests and the system is rubbish - it was constantly not recognising the car $26 a night is over the top. Indeed the "Amenity Fee" of $20 per night (before tax) is outrageous. Whatever rate you get, you will be paying at least $50 more in taxes and "Amenity Fees". This fee is, I gather, for the use of the pool and the gym. We used neither. It is utterly iniquitous and is typical of the money grabbing Honolulu hotel attitude. I couldn't care less what other hotels charge - I am not staying in them. Moreover, there were mostly two lifts working at our level, at times there are commandeered by one member of staff delivering towels and blocking the doors with a great yellow cart. We waited one evening 10 minutes for an elevator only to be greeted by this exceedingly surly member of staff who could care less about the guests. So in summary, the hotel is OK. We were fine there. What I would say is that if you pay more than $120 per night - you should look elsewhere. This is a Budget brand charging Four Star prices. The staff were lovely (with one notable exception as I say). Would I return - possibly - can I recommend it - yes with qualifications as mentioned.

The room was very small, no cloth cabinet. The bathroom was small too and very low. The staff was friendly and assisting; late check out was easily provided. The bed was good, the hotel offered a great view and was quiet. The hotel charged $27 per night for the use of the parking garage, which was full.... Had to park in the streets at a parking meter (free from 6pm to 7am). The second night I found a parking meter 5 blocks away.

Newly renovated, fresh and clean.Tower block. Staff, although always busy were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts usual HIE fare but enjoyable. I cant say I enjoyed our stay and whilst I love HIE hotels normally was very disappointed in this one. Parking and going in and out was okay in the end,but the system needs streamlining. The rooms are just too too small for adults. Once we got our suitcases in ,we were quite uncomfortable honestly and were happy it was only a short stay.Reminded me of travellers hotels I saw in Japan. The bedside work station was a nuisance and just added to the crush in the room. I think they should be an option or choice not obligatory. Beds comfortable as always. Bathroom like a cubby house ,tiny, tiny, tiny. We had to squeeze through the door sideways. Air con belted out cool aiir noisily. Some good views from higher floors,if you are willing to stay in the room long enough to look at them.

We stayed there 7 nights, we really like the place, the hotel staff were so friendly and helpful, that just made our holiday even better! Room was very comfy and clean, got everything we wanted! Huge super comfy bed! Location is very good!

Well, it was bound to happen, I have finally been dissatisfied by an IHG property. Too bad it had to happen on our vacation to Oahu... Let's start at the check-in counter. Very long lines, you have to wait a long time for any request. Better to call, but when you just want to validate a parking ticket, it's very inconvenient. Security folks are useless, they just stand around doing nothing, certainly not helping. Staff was smiling but clearly lacking training. We were informed of all the renovations that were happening and the various downsides about it. This should have been communicated beforehand, honestly. I was not welcomed as a Spire member and was not offered welcome points. When I asked the following day, they said they did not know how to do that. Surprise! Then the room. So small, I thought I was in Europe, not in the USA. Two people can't walk freely in the room, there is just not enough space. One has to climb up the bed to let the other pass. Ridiculous. An old and rundown AC unit was right by the bed, blasting air and noise. No balcony. The bathroom door is frosted, so if someone is using it at night, it lights up the entirety of the room. What we did like was the fridge, the view and the cleanliness of the room in general. The parking was just a joke. I already mentioned the ticket validation process, but really, the system just doesn't work. We had to push the support button every time we wanted to exit. Oh and 38$ per night? That's highway robbery. But the worse with all this is they still charged us an extra "Amenity" fee of 20$ per night. No reason whatsoever (I asked). I tried to have it removed or reduced, but to no avail. Even Spire members are hit by this imaginary tax. All this while the Holiday Inn Resort 3 blocks away does not charge it for its valued members. The only redeeming quality was the breakfast area. We found it quite nice with plenty of space. It's standard HIX fare, so you won't be wowed, but you know what to expect. Oh that and the location. Nice place. So in short, make sure to avoid this place. The price looks nice at first sight, but when you factor in a more expensive parking spot and a 20$ fee per night (and all the usual city taxes), you won't save much and you'll get the most ridiculously small room you'll ever see.

Disclaimer: The hotel is under renovations. The price is great for the location. We were able to walk to the beach and to plenty of eateries. Breakfast buffet was great and fully stocked at all times. Seating was lacking. Extra tables outside might alleviate this problem. While the pool was small the pool area was rather large. Great area to relax in. Some of the issues we encountered: 1. The front desk was always packed and had a long wait no matter the time of day. 2. The elevators were only running a few at a time. With as many floors as they had it would be beneficial to have most of them running for your guests. 3. The parking garage was very tiny and limited. We had to park elsewhere for 2 of the 4 nights we were there. While they only had 2 floors open to guests (the remaining floors were closed do to renovations) I don't see this problem being resolved once renos are completed. 5. The parking system may want to be updated. In order to exit the parking garage you had to get your ticket validated at the front desk (long lines). I room key exit and entry would do wonders here! 6. The rooms were so small. Like hardly any room to walk around the bed small. 7. Bathroom doors were frosted meaning when the lights are on in the bathroom you can see the persons shadow in bathroom and it illuminated the bedroom in the middle of the night if in use. 8. The air conditioner was beyond loud and blew out colder then cold air without much regulating it. 9. Neighbor doors slammed shut all hours of the night. Doors could use some quiet stops. 10. Internet was spotty during certain parts of the day. With all that being said some of these issues will be resolved once the renovation is completed....others will not. I would still consider staying here for the price and location. Just be aware of some of the issues you will need to look past.

We are still here today. We came from another island for a wedding and wanted someplace inexpensive for the weekend. This was the best price found. Location is great, right in the heart of Waikiki. Hotel is almost done with renovations and very pretty. The rooms are small, but that's pretty standard for a Honolulu high rise, Brakfast room is lovely with a large variety - all pretty mundane. This may seem trite but the air conditioner is very, very loud and you really need it as you can't open the windows. It is an I the window unit- no central AC in the rooms. Also the bathroom fan goes on with the light and it is also very, very, loud. It's fine for now, but probably won't stay here again. The business center is still under construction but will probably be nice and modern as all the renovations are quite nice. Oh yes, the staff is very well trained and friendly, that helps.it is a Holiday Inn Express, so if you like their points it probably worth it.

We booked here as my husband is a IHG platinum member. Although I read the terrible reviews that the hotel is being renovated I was a bit worried. But in the end it didn't bother us.It is March and the renovations are almost complete. We got a great deal on the price per night and breakfast was included which added huge savings for 6 people on vacation. The rooms are brand new and very clean. Everything is newly renovated and clean. I was impressed with the breakfast everyday as it is hot. Hot eggs and bacon, yogurt, fruit, cinnamon buns. I think it was great value for money. They even have a laundry mat on the 3rd floor to wash your beach towels and things ( for 3.25 ) . For the the price per night plus the IHG member points, I think it was great. If you can stand a bit of renovations to save money I would definitely stay here. And even without renovations in the future here I would definitely stay again. Another thing is that the staff at this hotel are amazing. Excellent customer service from everyone here. Very pleased !!!!

On our trip it will probably be booked up! This is our second stay. While the lobby is still under construction, you can't hear any of it up in your room. Nice pool. Workout room is awesome. Breakfast is typical Holiday Inn. Super friendly staff!
