Stayed here on business so wasn't too worried as long as it was clean and the food was ok. It passed that easily and the staff were very good. The hotel needs a bit of a refurb as it's a bit 1980's. This is obviously been addressed as the bathrooms had been already done to reasonably and modern standard as another review mentioned. The decor/bedding was ok (spotless white with contrast band/ cushions) but the rooms are a bit tired (carpets) and doors require a touch of TLC. Nice fish and chips and breakfast good. Didn't ask about Gluten Free options.
Visiting family for the weekend so we booked into here. Clean, with a comfortable bed. Excellent choices for breakfast. The bar was busy in the evening but the hotel was quiet and peaceful. Would recommended and happily stay again.
We stayed one night during our C to C walk. We were picked up from the trail to be transferred to the hotel and then back again the next morning. The room was comfortable and the service was friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant and breakfast in the morning, and we were very satisfied with the meals. We would be happy to revisit the hotel in the future.
Good. Comfortable enough, with good sized room and bathroom (with bathtub). Reasonably good evening food. Complimentary pick-up/drop-off service to C2C trail. Only major problem was inability of staff to deal with noisy kids (from 80th birthday function) right outside my ground floor room window. Took 6 calls over an hour for them to finally send someone to silence them. However, they did waive a bar bill in recompense.
Stayed one night at the Wainstones as part of our coast to coast walk. Lovely hotel and we had a bath in our room ! Food and room were excellent. We had a wonderful stay and we were sat in the reception the next day discussing a possible return visit when we met...grizelda. The woman who had been charged with transfering us to Clay bank walked past us without making eye contact and muttered "come on you two...I haven't got all day" ! We weren't even sure she was talking to us until she flung open the back of the car and pointed in the boot. She then broke every speed limit in the land litteraly skidding to a halt in the laybye at Clay bank. She flung open the boot lid and without saying a word just pointed to our rucksacks. We said Thank you to here but she just shrugged her shouders and sped off. She was easily the rudest person we'd met since St Bees and the reason this hotel get a 4 not a 5. I have no idea why this woman (slim, grey haired,, about 60) was so angry (we had a 9am transfer slot and we were there for 8.45), she didn't bother to wait for the other two guests who had also booked the 9am slot. Something had obviously upset her so she'd decided to take it out on guests who had just paid £150 to stay the night. There was NO excuse for her behaviour....if it was my hotel her head would roll.
Prompt pick up and drop off service for walkers. Spacious room and bathroom, luggage taken to room for us. Good amenities in room and helpful staff. Drying room for boots available. Had a good meal in the bar, good service throughout. Excellent porridge and as a welcome change a salad box is offered instead of sandwiches for pack up. Would definitely recommend.
Stayed here whilst walking the Cleveland Way. We walked down from and back 2 the trail but the offer was get much there. Very friendly welcome and service throughout the stay was very good. Room and bathroom both big & spotless & stay ended with a tasty breakfast.
As instructed rang hotel at prearranged place didn't have to wait long Our wet boots were taken to be dried ready for next day Nice size clean twin room Good eve meal I had the haddock chips and peas, all the staff very polite and helpful Breakfast the next morning was good as was the packed lunch of salad bowl a welcome change from sandwiches Didn't have to wait long to be taken back to were we was picked up the day before Would stay there again
The title of this review says it all. Both dinner and breakfast were really good and plenty of choice which most four stars would try to achieve. Martin was an excellent and hardworking host. We were made to feel really welcome and nothing too much trouble. Would liked to have had a seating area away from the bar restaurant but our personal choice. Room was large and very clean with lots of nice touches. Carpets and decor could do with updating and not my personal taste but very practical apart from that it is a really lovely hotel for a break. The 'secret garden' is a really relaxing and well kept area. They have a good set up for functions with room dividers and private bar/ toilets to keep it self contained.
As many other reviewers, we were walking the Cleveland Way and needed a pick up from Clay Bank Top. I rang the hotel the night before and they confirmed that we just had to ring when we got to the Wainstones (and yes, there is phone signal from there), which is about half an hour's walk from Clay Bank, and they would pick us up. There was torrential rain that day but David was waiting for us and didn't mind us being wet in his car. When we arrived, he told us that they could dry our clothes in the laundry dryer and would put our boots in the boiler room to dry. Our room was large, and we could control the radiator for drying purposes, which was great. We had windows that opened, so the room was not stuffy as some others have said. We had dinner in the bar, and it was ok. Vegetarian curry was unexceptional, and the Chicken Parma was a bit dry but still tasty. The hotel is a bit tired but it was the customer service that made it very much the right place to stay - as others have said, thank you David for looking after us.
