We arrived mid day and although check in wad 3pm they happily took our bags and advised where the discount parking was located. A fantastic room. Excellent linen and big fluffy towels. As breakfast was included we went down at 8am. Again great service. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Perfect location for walking sightseers
I had not been in York since attending our rector's consecration as Bishop in 1982, so I made a quick visit en route from Scotland to Salisbury. The Lamb & Lion was a perfect place to stay, giving my time constraints. I could walk the wall, visit the Minster and Shambles and enjoy a good meal. My room looked out onto the arch of the ancient wall (you can see it in the Trip Advisor photo). It was large (a little cold for October); breakfast was what you would expect in a well-established English hostelry -- and greatly appreciated when I had a very long train journey looming later in the day!
I really enjoyed my experience in the hotel. It is very clean, friendly and full of history and character. The staff were absolutely marvelous and extremely helpful. The location is superb, right in the centre of the town. Would definitely come back again.
The room was very nice. Good mattress. Good bedding. Lovely breakfast. It is a busy road outside and ear plugs are a good idea. You are in the middle of york so it is in a good position. I would stay again
If looking for a luxurious hotel don't go to the Lamb & Lion; but if you want some good old fashioned comfort and conviviality, one couldn't do better. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It reminded us of long lost days when we would sit and dream (we are both in our mid seventies). We were there on a Wednesday night in February, we think it could be noisy in the summer, especially at weekends.
We called at the lamb and lion last Sunday whilst out with our friends who live in York We had been walking round town looking for a traditional Sunday lunch and settled on the lamb and lion. We found a table in the back snug which was cosy and could easily have seated 6 to 8 people - so 4 of us had lots of space Three of us opted for the slow braised Yorkshire lamb which melted in your mouth and had intense flavour - absolutely delicious My husband had the roast topside and that too was lovely. Huge Yorkshire puddings that were fluffy and gorgeous came with both dishes and roast potatoes and root vegetables. A gravy boat of meat juice gravy topped it all off. Absolutely wonderful The bar area welcomes dogs and 2 looked very comfortable in there on Sunday Great range of Yorkshire hand pulled beers. Friendly efficient service Another long walk back through York helped to burn off the calories Highly recommend it for a Sunday lunch
The hotel is situated just inside the city wall and the rooms are quirky and beautifully presented. The food is excellent and they had just changed the menu over last week. I have bass with muscles as a main and my partner had lamb both were presented beautifully and were delicious. The staff were very informative and helpful when asked about things to do and places to go. However, the only downside is the noise that you experience with revellers going past until 4am and then the unfortunate noise of the empties getting moved. (I'm sure this could be delayed until slightly later) Luckily we had ear plugs which helped my partner but not me. I would recommend but please bring ear plugs and the staff need to be aware of the time when they are taking out the empties.
We stayed there first just one night on 18th Feb 2017 and we found the staff to be very helpful. The bar was very characteristic and the selection of ales was (for my tastes) perfect. The food looked good and we should've selected there to eat, but we went elsewhere. The room was adequate although quite small, we were in room 5 which was a little "quirky" as we needed to go through a corridor to our end suite. There was the usual teas and coffee with a complimentary biscuit. The down side for me was the noise from the street, so get a room on the other side if your can. The building is really old and the windows rattle if a door is slammed anywhere. The are single glazed sliding sash windows that might be as old as the building (1782). The last of the revellers came past at about 4.00am, then at 7.30am they decided to start moving the empty bottles into the recycle bin!!!! On Sunday morning! So in summary, good staff, good food, good ale. Noise though, and we should have guessed this as there were ear plugs along side the tea and coffee. I will not stay there again. Sorry
Great location, clean comfortable bedroom, lovely breakfast but ask for a room at the rear of the property as we were staying in a room over looking Petergate and on a night its noisy with all the people going home from a night in York
very disappointed, the food was nothing special, very basic and didn't look appealing. My son ordered the roast dinner, the Yorkshire pudding looked home made, but the meat looked and tasted like a thin piece of value ready cooked supermarket meat. The veg looked very sorry for themselves, Mine came in the fancy , basket for slim chips and miniature pan for the peas. The chips were tasteless sticks , the fish was tasty, but overall disappointing, The service was good though!
