We chose this pub/hotel due to the location within the city and easy access to the train station. Wonderful folks. We had breakfast, beers and even dinner during the evening. Great location and great information about the area. Thank you so much for making this trip enjoyable. For those warmer days, a fan is available to capture the cool breezes!
So yes, it's in an older pub/inn, and that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'd stay here again without hesitation. Spotted this adorable place during a day trip to York in 2016 and made it the must-stay destination of my 2017 trip to the UK. The maze of rooms inside the pub is wonderful; the pub bar is the "front desk"--also wonderful; the location can't be beat (just down the cobbled street from the Minster and adjacent to the Shambles AND at a bus stop). But absolutely the best of all: THE FOOD! I didn't need to eat anywhere else; in fact, after checking out and getting on the bus for the station, I returned here to have lunch! Food is that good. Breakfast was also included and this is where I merrily gorged on English breakfast versus my usual croissant. This place will hit your historic and quaint buttons! And the people are very friendly. Only negatives--(1) the shower was that annoying and tight quarter circle, common in the UK, but the only one I encountered this trip; (2) wi-fi was very sketchy; (3) my room was over the courtyard, which is busy in the afternoons and until about 10 PM; and there's no A/C (it is a very old building after all). So if you need to nap or go to bed early, I'd ask for a room away from the courtyard, which is a lovely spot for lunch or drinks by the way. York was my favorite locale in 2016, and still is after my 2 nights in 2017. I could not visit England without coming here, and can't imagine not staying at the Lamb & Lion.
Very chilled environment, drink prices were very reasonable, staff and their service were excellent. we didn't eat here on this occasion as we had just been elsewhere for food but as we were waiting at the bar, we seen some dishes being served which looked and smelt amazing!
This pub is like Aladdin's Cave - it has a host of additional rooms and corners inside, although it appears small from the entrance. There is also an extensive beer garden just against the historic city walls. Food is good value pub food - freshly cooked and quickly served. A good pint too!
Called in here for a drink very pleased and surprised to find a lovely outside seating area, you wouldn't know from the front of the building as it's very central but the beer garden is at the back of the building up some steps quite a large area.Ww had already had lunch but wish we'd waited as the food coming out looked really good but will definitely come here next t time we are in York
Went here on Saturday 17th June which happened to be one of the hottest days we have had this year. The beer garden was perfect for this so we stayed there quite a while soaking up the rays. The place is very friendly, quirky, quaint and a typical old pub. Really enjoyed it BUT my god £5.10 for pint of Peroni!?! Seriously over priced, even more pricy than London. If it wasn't for the great beer garden sun trap we may have moved on after one drink.
Stayed here for two nights. FAB location. Room was lovely bed really comfortable it had everything you needed hairdryer fan etc we had the full English breakfast it was beautiful. Walked to the racecourse took us about 1hr then had a lovely meal on the night. The hospitality is brilliant they can't do enough for you made us so welcome. We'd definitely stay here again:)))
We have just return from spending a weekend in York. We chose the Lamb and Lion for its location. Great Location, centre of York is 5 minute walk. So easy to pop back dump things in the room, get changed it the weather changes etc. We found the all the staff we dealt with very courteous and helpful. The breakfast was a very good standard. Our room (Room 1) very clean ideal and comfortable for our weekend visit. Only minor thing and did not spoil our stay was it was a bit noisy at night but you are in the middle of a busy city so it was expected. Overall I would defiantly use the hotel again.
We went last Friday. The place looks enticing from the outside, being almost 'hidden' by Bootham Bar. The real surprise came when I paid for two pints of rather ordinary bitter - each pint cost £3.95!!. I won't be going there again.
If you eat in one place during your stay in York make it the Lamb & Lion Inn. Each course is designed to please your palate and your sight, the food can only be described as stunning. Good selection of drinks, great service and a cracking beer garden complete the experience. A real example of what a gastropub should be!
