like staying at a friend’s house! I was impressed by the hospitality and friendliness. The lication was perfect and the room was very clean. Attention to details, and overall quality. I will go back next time I am in NYC!
Very nice experience. We spent 3 nights in Calliope room on 2nd floor. Room was clean, nicely decorated and perfect for our needs. Nice change from hotel vibe. Had a small refrigerator. James the owner was available and responsive to us.Would stay again.
Stayed a week with friends and shared the third floor rooms with the adjoining kitchen. Room was ok, but the air conditioner didn’t really cool the room well enough. However what spoilt the stay was the filthy condition of the kitchen. It was great being able to do our own breakfasts and a few dinners, but not before we gave the kitchen a thorough cleaning. The fridge hadn’t been cleaned, the microwave was splattered with food, the stove and hot plates greasy and dirty. It really spoilt the stay as we never felt entirely at ease in the dirty kitchen. Even after contacting the owner and letting him know of the conditions, he did not bother replying or even acknowledging our email. Maybe not really interested??
We loved staying at 255West Guesthouse. We stayed for 6 nights and 7 days and could not be happier. James was extremely courteous and helpful! We stayed in the Calliope room and enjoyed how spacious and lovely it was. The Guesthouse is a quick 8-minute walk from the subway station, and has terrific amenities. The shower was large, we had coffee and hot tea provided. Couldn’t be happier. Will definitely stay again.
The guesthouse was centrally located in Harlem. We were travelling with another couple so had a room each, with private facilities and shared the private kitchen on the 3rd floor. The bedrooms & facilities were clean & comfortable. The kitchen was v dirty. We needed to wash any utensils & crockery before using them. The dishwasher wouldn’t pump out and the oven was covered in grease inside & out.
Our room at 255West Guesthouse was large, quiet, and beautifully appointed - a cool oasis to return to after the long hot days in NY last week. The street itself is calm, but within easy walking distance to many restaurants and stores. We appreciated the coffee and tea service in the living room downstairs, (one suggestion -- would love to have a caffeinated black tea selection in addition to the really good herbal teas!) James is a wonderful and gracious host - we appreciated the low-key policy of not servicing the room unless we specifically needed anything. If you want to stay in what feels like a warm and inviting home, then this is your place. It is definitely our new favorite place in Manhattan.
Make sure you coordinate your arrival as they have to let you in but once you are in if you are able to get the top floor it is an awesome spacious place :) The decor and style is very nice and the bathrooms are amazing.
If you want to feel at home and not just a visitor, this is the place to stay when in NY. My guestroom was large and very comfortable. It faced the street and there were no issues with noise. The attention to detail from the decor to the french press coffee is wonderful. James, the owner is very relaxed and fun to chat with. He will meet you when you arrive and answer any questions you may have, from how to get around to where the best place to get food. You are provided a key and you're "home". Speaking of food, there is a grocery store at the end of the block and a mini-fridge in your room to store snacks, drinks, etc. Of course, there are many restaurants in the area, so you don't have to go to the grocery store. The subway is close by and will get you anywhere in the city. If I am in the NY area again, I will definitely stay here.
great location - block of brownstones on both sides of street (most are beautiful and others are under renovation) -- near to most of harlems landmarks - great host - very quiet room, nicely finished - will be back
I liked the location a lot. It was easy to get downtown by subway and a half hour casual walk to the top of Central Park. The hotel is very special. Much thought and detail is apparent in the renovation of this lovely old place. So quiet too. Thank you James for a great stay.
