Hotel Union4.0 out of 5.0

Our room was poorly lit and to charge my devices, I had to unplug a lamp to get an outlet. The tub/shower leaked and flooded the bathroom. The front door latch would not turn, denying us protection from anyone with a master key entering the room (slim chance, but it happened at a different hotel to another couple on our tour. The next morning, I reported the problems to the front desk-they apologized and said the issues would be taken care of. We returned later in the day-nothing had been remedied. I would avoid this property.
First of all, the location of the Union Hotel is great. There is ample free parking. The lobby and common areas are charming, including the small but interesting car museum. Breakfast is quite good with a selection large enough to satisfy anyone. Our room was quite small but clean. It is certainly not upscale in terms of fixtures, carpet, etc (more like a Holiday Inn) but it is comfortable. We got a room with a fjord view, which was spectacular, of course.
We were on a group tour and were glad we got a room with a view of the fjords and waterfall. The room is reasonably sized compared to most European hotels, clean . No tea / coffee making facilities in the room which is normal. Carpets are slightly worn out. Location is great, walking distance to the small village, shops, cafes. Breakfast and dinner buffet has a great selection - one of the best selections we had during our tour. We are not big meat eaters, and still find the selection great.
Hotel Union is the GrandDame of Geiranger, and deservedly so. Although it does cater to high-end tours, that doesn't get in the way. Our room (#574) a Jr. Suite in the new section was unforgettable, two rooms with full windows to the Fjord. WOW! All of the comfort you'd expect, and more. Two pools, one inside and one out...with that view. The main dinning room/buffet style, was very good. The window tables were reserved for the non-tour guests. The on-site fine restaurant was very good, and we enjoyed having the choice inside the hotel, as there is not much else available.
Huge lobby and sitting area. Feels upscale. Room large and clean. Good sitting area although the rug was worn. Views of river and mountains. Close to a major fjord. Large dining area. Dinner was average at best. Breakfast was very complete and good. If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.
I am might a demanding guest, but when paying more than 5000Nkr for a weekend, then it is putting some constraints into the expectations. The hotels has a little bit lack of identity as it seems like it has been rebuild and extended many times during the years. Not a big issue, but still something I would like to mention. Anyway - going to Geiranger has maybe little to do with the hotel-experience as the location is amazing in it self. You shouldnt spend to much time inside the hotel as this place has too much other things to offer. Food was, according to my preferences, very good. The staff is friendly and nice, pool area is nice and the garden is very nice. Just the room was not very good. It was a little bit dirty and I had the overall feeling of a room who is in the need of some re-construction. Bathroom had hair from other peoples, and there is rusty elements here and there. Sink area is very small and there isnt place for a bag or nothing there. I also missed hair-conditioner and some body lotion at least. Else, I always hate carpets in my room so this is automatically a no-go for me. I feel it is time to remove those carpets and put something feeling more clean.
We were part of a large group when we visited this hotel for lunch. The location is simply beautiful with great views to the Fyord below. First impressions of the hotel exterior were high as the building itself is extremely attractive. The inside was just as lovely. Our lunch consisted of soup as a starter followed by Pollock with boiled potatoes and vegetables. A dessert of fruit and cream followed. Vegetarians in the group were offered suitable alternatives. Portions provided were large and some people struggled to finish their main course even although it was very good. We had limited time for lunch but thanks to the efforts of the staff service was prompt and staff friendly. Thank you for a lovely experience.
What a beautiful place, right at the end of the Fjord. Did a boat tour, amazing scenery, our stay at The Union Hotel was beautiful. The little town has a great supermarket where you can buy fresh bread rolls, and make up your own lunch.
We were fortunate to have stayed 2 nights at this hotel, with absolutely magnificent views of the town, Geirangerfjiord and a waterfall. The buffet breakfast and evening meals were excellent and I am not usually a fan of evening buffets. There was a separate restaurant that unfortunately was not to gluten free friendly, so we couldn't use it. It also has a spa. We greatly enjoyed our stay there, particularly just chilling out with a cool drink and soaking up the truly amazing views.
Wonderful location for exploring the most beautiful Geiranger fjord. Hotel interior is straight out of the nineties but you will be out in nature enjoying the phenomenal landscapes. Breakfast buffet is extensive and will provide good energy for exploring.
