I'm giving 3 stars because the location is really good and the price wasn't bad considering the location. That is where the "good" ends. The hotel has kind of a funky smell. Not offensive, but...old? Our room was on the ground floor in the back. Horrible location as the garbage truck came buy at 5am every day and slammed down the dumpster. Then some staff would make a bunch of noise rolling carts and such. The room is pretty small (like New York City small), but it was odd that they didn't at least include nightstands next to the bed. The bed was really firm and the sheets are very thin. Next time I'll stay 1 or 2 streets back -- South Beach is very walkable.

The staff are friendly and helpful in this intimate Art Deco style hotel. The decor such as the bedroom wall mural, mirror wall and furniture reflect an earlier era. The hotel’s age is apparent in many details and in some of these a little smartening up would result in a truly impressive interior in the room in which I stayed and in some of the communal areas too. The bedside tables were in an appropriate Art deco style; however, there were no table lamps. An ironing board and iron, a safe and good hanging space were provided in a nicely positioned walk-in cupboard behind a opaque glass door.Though the shower room was compact careful choice of complimentary shampoo, gel and soap had been made and the shower, toilet and basin facilities seem all to have been updated fairly recently. I found the wall-mounted air-conditioning unit rather old and noisy and so switched it off - at the precise time I was staying it was not needed as the weather was slightly cooler during those four nights than for the seasonal average. The room I was in had a good side view over and through palm trees to the beach. The newly refurbished lobby-bar area is very pleasant, and is the venue for the presentation of the well-devised simple buffet breakfast. The hotel’s location is excellent with the beach a short walk immediatley in front of the hotel and there are numerous restaurants, bars, cafes and shops adjacent or in close proximity. Bus services, including Miami Beach’s free trolley can be accessed from convenient stops in nearby streets. For travellers from the UK it is important to be aware before you pay in advance that there is a ‘Resort Fee’ payable on arrival at the hotel and that this is not included in any special offers.

The Penguin Hotel is not very big but the Art Deco Miami Style makes it very typical in the Miami Beach area. We were there for 3 days with our two kids and we had a lovely stay. Our room was big enough for a 3* accomodation, always clean and with nice views to Ocean Drive and the beach which is only 2 minutes walking distance (Beach towels available at the hotel). Service was very good, always helpful and polite. Standard buffet for breakfast, nice and tasty (the kids had a great time with the Waffle machine!). One of the best things about it is the price and location which couldn’t be better!! Not luxurious at all but cute and familiar. Another good thing about it is the Public Parking Site 2 streets away which is much cheaper than the parking offered at the same hotel. Shops, restaurants, supermarket, bus stops and cheerful night life nearby. We are very grateful at the girl at reception desk for keeping our luggage in the locker after the check out until we left to the airport. We would love to come back and we’d definitely recommend it to everybody.

This is a friendly and very nice hotel to stay in when visiting Sout Beach. Perfect close to the beach as well as center of South Beach.. Carmen in front desk, excellent on service with always a smile in her face ;-))

It's definitely an old old old hotel. Very much fitting for the art deco theme of that area of the community. The mural in our room was beautiful. I wish I would have taken a picture of it. I had all intentions of doing so. Room was tiny but given the age of the hotel that is typical for the age of the property. Lobby was also super small. We had to check out before breakfast so we didn't get to indulge in that benefit. It is right across the street from the beach. I found a better deal after the fact at a more well known hotel after the fact but would consider staying here again when we come to the area in May!!! Hopefully next time its just us and not the inlaws with us.

Wrapping up a 5 day stay in South Beach Miami at the Penguin Hotel located at 1418 Ocean Drive. Plan on spending time in the morning enjoying the breakfast buffet at the hotel and the evening people watching on Ocean Drive. The staff at the Penguin did an outstanding job. I highly recommend it for Miami travelers.

Excellent location for art deco, South Beach, shopping and social areas. not for those seeking peace and quiet as high tourist area and many children in hotel. Staff were really lovely and the breakfast was fine. Room was large and comfortable but typical of Ocean drive properties so not like the large chain hotel facilities but more quaint to its location. Would happily stay here again.

We booked this hotel after reading some good reviews online as we wanted a good place near south beach in Miami. So far the experience had been awful. We’re currently staying here as we had booked a non refundable room online and so we cannot even go to another place . So my first recommendation to anyone visiting Miami is not to go for a non refundable booking at penguin hotel. The room itself is dingy with worn out furniture and we have a window with the view of a wall with generators on it . I asked for a change of room with a view because the whole purpose of coming to this place was to have a view of the ocean but they are saying no room is available. The place has a very moldy smell and it just gives a very dirty feel . We have one more night in this place and then we’re checking out. So glad that we booked another place for the remaining days in Miami. The only positive is that the bathroom was clean. The breakfast area is also very small and badly done . I just cannot think of anything positive to state about this place .

Amazing place and service. Super happy with the staff. Super professional, all the time smiling and taking care of us. Super thank you to the guy on breakfast (amazing service and professional),super thank you to the guy from the bar (amazing and professional service and lovely cocktails), super thank you to the girls from reception (amazing service and very kind). Guys you are a perfect example how has to be a professional and brilliant service! Sure we come back! Steven and Maria

We booked this hotel and got a booking confirmation. Soon we received an email from the hotel asking us to send them a copy of our credit card (both sides!) via email. We were absolutely shocked about this as this is obviously against all security recommendations. We cancelled our booking.
