Kaanapali Ocean Inn

2.5 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

Consistent with other reviews, our room was in serious need of an update. This was fine for us because we only needed a place to sleep. However the room cleanliness was extremely poor. The bathroom wall had significant water damage, lots of bugs everywhere, etc. Don't mind the room needing some updates, but the cleanliness issue was pretty significant (and as recent college grads, we don't consider ourselves to be too picky about living conditions). On the plus side, we had a great view (ocean view on the third floor) and the amenities included with the Royal Lahaina resort are fantastic. There are nice pools and hot-tubs, tennis courts, a nice (but expensive) restaurant, and coffee & ice cream shop. There is also an activities desk to rent snorkels, kayaks, SUP, etc. There is a giant stretch of really nice beach area that was not busy at all, and had some decent snorkeling. Another great addition is the locker room by the tennis complex to shower and clean up after check out if you are flying out later in the day. The location is also great. There is a free trolley that runs downtown to the Whaler's village (only a 5 - 10 minute ride). The trolley runs most of the day and until about 10 pm. There are a few food options within walking distance as well. Overall, if you don't mind a dirty room and a few extra crawling friends in your suitcase, the pros might outweigh the cons.

If you are staying at the Kaanapali Ocean Inn, stay in a ocean front room. The view on the lanai is spectacular. Also the inn is part of the Royal Lahaina resort, and includes all of their amenities. The resort offers a complimantary room to shower and clean up after check out if you are flying out later in the day. The Kaanapali Ocean Inn if for people who want a million dollar view, and do not mind a dated room that needs updating. This was our third time here, and will stay again.

The took was ok for the money... but is in desperate need of updating. The toilet barely flushed and looked like it could be in danger of overflowing with each flush... the room smelled like mold and leftover cigarette smoke. The room included a safe from the 70s but no microwave. The fridge was very tiny. The bed was the most uncomfortable and outdated mattress I've ever slept on. Obviously not expecting the ritz Carlton otherwise I would've paid the extra money to stay there instead, but even the basics here seemed to be lacking.

The main resort facilities were wonderful... BUT the Ocean Inn part of the resort was old and in desperate need of a remodel since the 70's. As you walked into the place it smelled like the musty youth camps we went to decades ago. The AC was a little switch between off and high and was pumping out that terrible smell. The furniture was maybe from the 80s and painted repeatedly so the drawers would not even open.. Tile (all three different kinds) was very old and grout was stained. The walls - although painted and clean - had actually bubbled up from all the paint. The refrigerator was rusty. The bedding was lovely but the the mattress was terrible. The shower was old and stained grout.. Very youth camp bathroom. The hallway carpet was stained and way past need for replacement. We needed a place to stay for one night before our resort room was ready so we chose this one - based on reviews and pricing. What a mistake. Hey but we lived through it and got out of there first thing in the morning.

Arrived the first day and didn't have queen bedroom available even though I had booked months in advance and called 2 weeks before our stay and they said our room would be available. They put us in a double bed room and then moved us to a queen bedroom 2 days later. The hotel was very noisy every night and one night we were awaken to someone's room that was flooded. The floors were never swept or cleaned not to mention the shower, bathroom sink drain was plugged. There was always clean sheets and towels every day and hotel was right on the beach and that's was you expect for $165 a night.

Very happy with all accommodations and will go back

Arrived at 11 pm, couldn't find our way ended up in a dirt lot about quarter mile away.

Older hotel on resort located right next to luau so u will hear that for the duration but the view was amazing and falling asleep to the sound of waves was so peaceful. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful and the resort prices were competitive with those off resort so really no reason to ever leave. A better discount on luau would have been nice being that it was like being there from my room but such is Maui.Mahalo to the staff you were awesome

We were charged $10.00 per day parking and had to compete for a space. Many times we had to drive around many times before a space became available. This is not satisfactory to my way of thinking.

This was our 5th time to Kaanapali, and our 1st stay at the Kaanapali Ocean Inn. We received an upgrade to a ocean front room with a spectacular view. The inn is the sister property of the Royal Lahaina resort, with use of the amenities on the resort. The Ocean Inn is the most practical, and the best bargain on Kaanapali Beach, and yes we will stay their again!

It's was an amazing stayed. Ice machine was very far out from the premises and it really sucks. Beach view room is amazing

Beautiful, priceless location right on the beach. The Royal Lahaina Luau is right next to the hotel. You can enjoy the music from the comfort of your ocean view deck. Sadly, the day we arrived I kneeled on the floor to activate the safe and was attacked by fire ants. My legs were covered with bites for four+ weeks. When notifying the staff, all that was offered was the $20 off parking. Very disappointed with that aspect of stay.

The hotel is in pretty poor condition. Starting with the carpets in the hallway, the rusty shower in the room, the whole hotel needs major overhaul. There is not enough lighting in the hallway either.

We stayed two weeks here. And while yes alot of the things people wrote are true we think this place was perfect! We could see the beach from the balcony which the beach was then only 100 feet or so walk. Every night we would hang out on the beach and got free music to serenade us from the lua. You could enjoy all the amenities from all the resorts within walking distance thanks to the beach walk path. We couldnt have been any happier! The staff was all very friendly. The hotel is perfect for the price. I didnt give them five stars for everything because like I said the previous posts are true but I think people expect too much. Did we have cockroaches? Yes but its how you handle the situation. For my boyfriend and I we just laughed at those "problems". You should have seen us running around the room to get it! It was hilarious and priceless! The one thing I didnt like was that the parking spaces are sooooo tiny but thats everywhere on the island. Overall I would definitely stay there again! Mahalo!

This budget-priced hotel is situated on the same property as the Royal Lahaina Hotel, which is a hotel that is considerably more pricey. The benefit of the Kaanapali Ocean Inn is that the property is right on the same beach as the Royal Lahaina Hotel and guests can share all of the amenities of the Royal Lahaina without paying the extra $100 per nite. The hotel itself is not very modern, and the rooms were not kept looking perfect, but for a place to sleep with a good location it is a good deal. Be mindful that the Luau takes place many nights within earshot of the south-facing rooms, so that is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on whether you want to hear the Luau performance or not. Overall, I would stay there again as it's a reasonably priced hotel for such a great location. On the downside, I think the hotel management could spend a few more dollars on the rooms ensuring cosmetic things do not become a distraction such as wallpaper peeling off the bathroom walls and burnt-out light bulbs not being replaced.

On the water, but otherwise dirty and nasty. Jellyfish warning as well.
