Mercure Wigan Oak Hotel

I've just returned from a four day stay at the Mercure in Wigan and have only good things to say about the hotel and the wonderful staff that work there. From the moment kind and capable Sheila checked me in right up to meeting Kevin, the manager, when I checked out all the staff that I encountered were friendly and efficient (a special mention must be made for Jade with her lovely nails who looked after me so well). The room was on the ground floor, traffic noise wasn't too bad and I had ear plugs with me anyway. It was a big room and had everything I needed. The hotel is a good standard, the telly worked, the shower was hot and powerful, my room was immaculate, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The staff make this hotel and I hope to return later in the year. I'd not bother trying anywhere else now.

Stayed for 2 nights with my wife on an "all inclusive" deal . From arriving at the reception to leaving the hotel we had a really good stay. The reception staff were excellent and we were checked in very quickly. The room was very clean and comfortable with the room cleaned daily. In fact all the staff were brilliant and made us feel very much at home. The food was excellent with very good service. Evidently some of the recent reviews have not been too good, but on our experience they were brilliant and made our stay brilliant, we will be definitely be going back.

A group of us stayed here for business recently. The rooms are ok, great size and has the basics (kettle, tea/coffee sachets, towels, hairdryer etc.) (No iron). I did notice a lingering smell of cigarettes in the corridor of the 4th floor but my guess was that the hotel allowed smoking back in the day and it hasn’t left it. The beds are comfortable and my overall stay in the room for the week was fine, no problems. The food in the restaurant is fresh, tasty and they have a variety of great dishes to choose from. The only negative thing I have to say is about the breakfast, the hot food selection was fab along with the toaster section, however, the fruit selection didn’t look as fab in my opinion (only a suggestion: maybe swap the pineapple for something else). The hotel is located in the middle of the town centre so it’s only less than 5 minute walk to the shops or same distance another way to a Tesco store. What really stood out for us was the customer service from Leonie. She was friendly, polite, helped us out when we needed it and stopped to chat with us. All staff were great too, nothing was too much trouble for any of them. Thanks for the stay :)

What can I say about this hotel great place to stay close to the city centre great staff really helpful and friendly will do any any for you. Must say a big thank you to a member of staff who was especially helpful Tashia who was freindly and I had a laugh with her really helpful and even stopped to help me when she had finished her shift and she was on her way home she still helped me. Also the disabled rooms were great and they had an easy to get to disabled toliet in reception and bar area, breakfast was really nice and once again the staff was helpful and polite, well worth a visit and I would definitely stop here again

first night staying at this hotel. friendly staff members. answered all my questions that I asked. there was always someone at reception or near by. breakfast was nice. all you eat. wide selection of cereal, bread, fresh tea and coffee. fruit. fresh fruit juices. room was lovely. warm, clean and had a selection of tea and coffee. bed was Comfy. would recommend this to anyone. will be returning. as first impressions always count. plus 5* food hygiene rating.

We stayed here prior to a house move. The room was really nice and spacious and very clean. Bathroom was same. We ate both nights in the restaurant area and the service was excellent. The food was gorgeous compliment to the chef. The bar staff really helpful and pleasant. Reception staff also very pleasant and helpful. Will definitely stay here again and would recommend highly.

We stayed here a week at a difficult time when my nephew was in last stage of cancer. The bedrooms are comfortable. Restaurant and bar are also very good. For me it was the amazing staff: reception; waiters/waitress; bar; chef; night porter and housekeeping. We were able to have late breakfast three times. When we left for the hospital at 4.00 am Clayton the night porter and the housekeeper both looked after my disabled dad. Greg the other housekeeper was really good to me. We also had the wet room for my dad which was excellent. Thank you to all the staff.

Hotel few minutes from city centre, arrived late check in quick and easy, room good size , bathroom ok, coffee and tea tray in room. We had our dinner in the Hotel restaurant food was very good for both dishes ordered and a bottle of wine to accompany our food all in sensible priced menu. After a good nights sleep, breakfast is served in the morning in the restaurant a choice of continental or full English breakfast help your self . Would stay again thank you.

I think this place is trying to go out of business if the service received is indicative. The bar/restaurant staff were to say the least indifferent leaving you standing at the bar looking around until they felt you looked enough of a "tool" and then arriving to serve you with a "smile". Avoid this place like the plague! Incidentally their plan of action when you complain is to offer 50% reduction on your food bill and hope you shut-up. Kudos to the chef food was good but took 50mins to arrive. I think what made me most angry was the late arrival of an elderly gentleman with management links to this hotel and watching the staff suddenly appear to be alive. Hey Ho you live and learn.

Arrived late evening, rude reception staff. Tried to make me pay twice as they claimed only a deposit was paid. Even argued after showing confirmation email as paid in full. Later on we received a knock at the door asking for further funds for parking a car... I don't even drive! No apology for the confusion or disruption. Bedroom was filthy. Bedding was dreadful. The beds actually felt like they were about to snap just climbing on or off the bed. Bathroom was a disgrace. Would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone especially if it's more than a one night stay! Thank god my hotel in Liverpool tonight is 110% up to scratch!
