My parents got married here and it was simply beautiful! The staff were all extremely helpful and didn't hesitate in helping! The garden outside was neat and well kept, perfect for photos! Would definitely recommend for events!
We chose the Mercure over any other hotels etc because of its proximity to the train station and town centre & quality of service. We have been frequent guests for the past 2 years. BUT we were very disappointed to note a downgrade in service when we stayed over last weekend. The towels and bedding were supposed to be white but were a shade of off-white. Toilet rolls were 3rd class. Management - please please do not lower our expectations of your hotel as they were brilliant 6 months ago.
The hotel staff do the best they can here with what they have got - a tired old worn out hotel. It's quite clear this hotel is in dire need of a refresh. It was fairly clean although the bathroom was a little on the minging side with mould spaws on the wall, mildew all round the shower unit, the plug hole was completely devoid of any plating and looked disgusting. The whole place has the air of not having had a penny of investment in the past decade. I was advised by staff that a refresh has been on the cards for ages, so please Mercure, pull your finger out. Not what I'd nor.y expect from this brand.
We stayed Mercure Wigan 3 nights and it was really good value for money. They have priced hotel really client friendly. We where here a golf holiday and watching British Open in Royal Birkdale. This was good choice unless 45 minutes drive for one way. It's 5 minutes walk to Wigan city center, where were couple of nice pubs to eat and drink. Parking was free in hotels customers. Room was little bit better and bigger than expected. It was suprising, that in the hotel were some many asian tourist with buses.
Stayed 2 nights. Breakfast was the usual style and fuelled for the day. Room tired and could do with a paint but clean and warm. Free parking with a fair amount of spaces which is secured over night. Would use again
Had a great weekend from start to finish..lovely welcome on arrival from ashley on reception..room was lovely and very clean..food was to high standard and all staff were great..special thanks to jade david and ryan who looked after us so well taking time to stop for a chat and laugh..no complaints on anything..fab!!
Just spent a short friday to sunday all inclusive break at this hotel. Firstly the checking in receptionist was extremely pleasant abd informative. Nice smile on her face. Ashley was approachable and professinal. We checked in quickly. Room was clean and spacious with very comfy beds. We went down at 7pm for our all inclusive meal. The food was absolutely delicious. The two staff who served us Jade and David were the friendliest and accommodating of any hotel ive been to. They couldnt do enough for us and their customer service made our weekend all the better. All weekend the food and staff was fantastic and it was worth every penny. Cant wait to come back and do it all again. Thank you.
The food is not as great as it used to be. Also the parking has parking eye and if you forget to put your registration in the hotel you end up with bills coming through for £90 i left the hotel to go to Tesco and was charged twice what a rip off!!!!
We stayed for one night and the hotel was handy for an event at the Old Courts about 15 minutes walk. On arrival in the car park you are bombarded with a sign on the gate then at least 8 further signs telling you to pay for parking or be fined £100. Under two of the signs is a mercure purple notice saying it's a private car park for hotel guests only. But nothing saying this parking is included in your room rate. So whilst the location number is in front of you, you get your mobile out and pay £4.20 and note you'll have to remember to pay again at midnight. You check it to the hotel, who ask you for your car registration number and say didn't you read the notice? you didn't need to pay! And No we can't refund you. Trying to get a refund from smart parking is so complicated I bet most people won't bother. Is this a deliberate con? I looked everywhere for the notice I'd missed on arrival but there is nothing and it must be deliberate that it is so unclear. The management needs to address this and make it clearer. The rooms are numbered strangely - room 402 is on the third floor. Might make sense to Americans but this is England! Our room was on the fourth floor. It was as expected but some grubby paintwork and the bathroom sink is too high with too large taps so you always get splashed in the chest when you wash your hands. The stops on the bath taps were difficult to override and temperature information seemed to be back to front as water was hotter at 38 than 42. The fourth floor corridor smells musty and damp. There was a bad leak in the ceiling over our bath. Staff were nice and breakfast plentiful although no cold meats, fruit or cheese.
The hotel was selected as a place for my family to stay on a recent trip to the area. There aren’t many options in Wigan so we chose to find a place that seemed to be clean and inexpensive. The hotel was better than what I expected from their website and was quite clean. The rooms were updated more recently than I had thought and we were quite pleased with our stay at the hotel. We were on the top floor which was nice as some of the street level noise was drowned out when we opened our windows (even though there wasn’t much to begin with). The hotel is easily accessed from the M6 and is only about 5 minutes drive from the exit. The hotel staff offered suggestions on a few local places to eat that were all within a 10 minute walk. Across the main street is a large shopping arcade that has many shops. The hot breakfast in the morning was slightly overpriced for what I thought should be charged, but was substantial enough to last us for much of the day. When you factor in the low cost of the room, the entire stay cost was still lower than most of the other options. If I were to travelling to the Wigan area again, I would not hesitate to stay at the Mercure Wigan Oak as it was a good hotel for the value and suited our purposes of a safe place to stay.
