We had our company Christmas Do @ Venue in December 17 and I stayed in one of large suites overnight. Location and buildings are slightly unusal, with the hotel be made up of a different aged extensions. Food was good, but nothing more - venue for the evening was good with a Casino theme. DJ was more interested in htting the bar than the beats - which didnt exactly help the atmosphere. Room was good, but with one of the coldest nights of the year and early morning snow - it hard to navigate the pathway.
Stayed for a few days over Christmas, it was very quiet but enjoyable. No restaurant but had room service so was nice and relaxed. Stayed in a four poster room which was very comfortable. We always stay here when visiting family as it’s local and convenient.would recommend.
Room was comfortable but small ,staff did oblige with a disabled toilet seat ,otherwise no disabled shower in double rooms ,only walking showers in single rooms! Sol was unable to use shower over the bath for 2 nights.
Great value for 1 night stay at Christmas. Good friendly staff and very clean. Or booking had been lost but was sorted out and we arrived upgraded to a garden Room with a four poster bed. Would start again.
The rooms are looking a little bit dated, but there was enough space in the family room for 4 of us. We only stayed 1 night while attending a wedding reception, therefore the room was OK for a 1 night stay. Husband had a shower in the morning and he commented that the bath was pretty deep, therefore it was a little bit difficult climbing in and out of the bath tub. There was a good choice of food at breakfast. The hotel has leisure facilities, but we didn’t have time to use these so can’t comment on what they were like.
Had my wedding here in November. Staff very helpful and all ran smoothly. The meal was great. Not seen pigs in blankets that big before. Good portions for the money paid. All guests were happy and commented how good it all was. Could have done with a room pre wedding with a bit more space to get wedding party ready but otherwise all was excellent.
Excellent value and lovely ambience on Xmas day. Would definitely visit again... The food was tasty and generous portions. The vegetables were too hard but down to personal preference. All in all a great time was had by all members of our party.
Please note that I didn't stay at the hotel, we did, however, have our family Christmas dinner there and what a dreadful experience it was. Our family all gathered at my parents house in Bury, travelling from Glasgow, Helensburgh and Oslo (Norway). For a Christmas break and as there was so many of us we decided to have Christmas dinner out, we have used other restaurants in the area with differing results. We had been given reasonable reports of the Bolholt so it was booked. Rather oddly we had to book our menu choices and pay well in advance of Christmas, never had to reserve with more than a deposit before, still, we went ahead. Arrived in good time when it all started go horribly wrong, initially the receptionist wanted to send us to a completely different building, which was a cheaper option, we did get it sorted before, seemingly the staff are not familiar with the names of the dining suites. We then were shown into a bar with insufficient seating so we all had to cluster around 2 chairs, not so good when you have elderly and disabled members in the party. After a few awkward minutes we were shown to the well decorated table, in a cold, atmosphere free room and no drinks order was taken. Within a couple of minutes of being seated the waitresses came out bellowing "Who's for pate, soup etc." All very uncouth and very school dinners, not what you expect for the price per plate. After a bit of a kerfuffle over the starters (as not many of us could remember what we ordered 10 weeks ago).. we settled into the meal - still no drinks order. I finally managed to call a waitress over despite their studious ignorance of the already served customers, and managed to get some table water. RESULT! After the starter was finished a couple of members of the party decided to go to the bar as they were obviously not going to take drinks orders at the table. The prawn starter was fine but the pate was, well, old and sloppy looking as if it had been left at room temperature all night.. So it was a slab of sloppy pate served with a sprig of fresh salad and a single slice of cheapo white toasted bread. The main courses arrived being heralded once again "Who ordered beef and who ordered turkey?" Unfortunately as the bar service was so slow, 3 members were still away when the main course was served. Not impressed. Now then the main course did come with a nice big slice of turkey, not the usual wafer thin stuff, however, that was the only good point. The roast potatoes were wrinkled and floury - like reheated ones would be, the turkey itself was verging on inedibility as it was so dry, the sprouts were not cooked, they were heated in a microwave and had the consistency of wood, the carrot batons were the same. We once again managed to snag a waitress and got some extra gravy to try and give the meal some level of edibility. Apparently the beef was abysmal. As we looked around the restaurant we did notice many plates going back to the kitchen less than half finished.. Hmmmm not just us then. Now for dessert, I had the cheese board which was without a doubt a success, well, even they can't ruin cutting bits of cheese, however, the waitress did manage to drop some of my biscuits on the floor and didn't bother replacing them. The Christmas pudding was well received albeit very scant on custard. There was a wee bit of a fuss with the crumble dessert as it was requested to be served with custard and it was delivered with ice-cream. Oh what a fuss was made by the waitress over having to change this! So to summarise, a dreadful meal served by miserable, attitude filled staff, that couldn't be bothered on the day. The duty manager (I assume) was the only one with any cheer about him, he did at least offer to give us a drink at the bar, oh and he refunded the child's meal which shouldn't have been charged in the first place, thanks, but no thanks, we really didn't want to waste any more of our Christmas day surrounded by miserable staff.
We arrived to a delightful reception area with friendly and helpful staff but unfortunately our visit went downhill from there. Very disappointing standard with dilapidated furniture in lounge/bar and room. Torn and worn areas of Chesterfield lounge suites held together with sticky tape/clear packaging tape. Not a great look. Our room had a lovely outlook but was very outdated with furniture and facilities. Mattress needs updating and with no hot water in our shower - our planned lengthy stay was cut short as we decided to check out early.
Having had a busy day with the children and Grand-children, not having to then drive for an hour and a half home, it was such a great way to end the day in such a pleasant Hotel. We had expected a cut-down breakfast but were surprised with the full layout and spread, using that infamous word, "Fab-u-lous"
