My wife and I stayed here for one night before our cruise. The suite was just refurbished and as such was very clean (and it still smelled a little like fresh paint). It was comfortable and we had a pretty good view of the water. A good but not luxurious suite it was perfect for a one-night stay.
We visited the Club Bar for drinks for a pre-dinner birthday treat. The service was faultless and the ambience refined yet relaxed. An oasis of calm in the bustling city of Valletta, highly recommended.
I have stopped here on two occasions now & consider it one of the finest hotels at which I have had the pleasure to reside. This hotel is not for everyone; it is rather old fashioned & 'quaint'. I like that. The pool and rooms are unable to offer flash, minimalistic furnishing, all chrome & square edges; you do not got to The Phoenicia for that. Many would say that the clientele are of a certain generation, I would say the hotel is for the discerning holiday maker of all ages. The Phoenicia is about comfort, taste, elegance, refinement, relaxation. It speaks of a bygone age that rather than suggesting an unwillingness to change with the times offers the visitor the opportunity to experience a unique & refreshing sojourn. The hotel should just about be refurbished now so well worth the visit even if just for drinks in the rather colonial Piano bar.
This hotel has an exceptional location just outside the walls of Valletta with easy access to all the sites and attractions. The Phoenicia is a storied hotel with steep roots in the British empire and has been visited by royalty and celebrities. She just re-opened after being closed for 18 months for renovations. Yes, there is some detail " punch list" work to be finished, however, for the most part from a guest point of view she is good to go. The strength of this hotel is location, excellent harbor views, beautiful architecture, sheer presence and grand public spaces like the lobby, a beautiful and expansive garden and an exceptional pool area with an infinity pool overlooking the harbor. Also, as part of the renovations they have infrastructure that works, which in Malta is not always a certainty. Their air-condition works very well and their bathrooms leave little to be desired. Service can be a bit spotty, however, in general is quite good. Many of the employees have worked their for decades, which can be a good and also a bad thing. The downside to the hotel is the size of their guest rooms. There is nothing they can do about that and if the size of the guest room is of critical importance, this is not the hotel for you. However, if you make sure you get a room with harbor view and balcony, you will soon overlook that your room is a bit cozy. The hotel serves an excellent breakfast on the terrace and it really is a beautiful setting overlooking the bay and the hotel gardens. This hotel in so many ways reminded us of British colonial times, a bit old fashioned and clearly not perfect, but ever so charming and likable.
Arrived on the night of the post election party in the square, however it stopped around 11 pm so did nt really affect me as closed window and air conditioning got rid of most of it. Breakfast on the terrace was v good with a large selection of food and eggs cooked to order with no delay. Meals in the evening watching the sun go down is my idea of perfection. My only complaint is the pool. There is no hand rail even though the steps are shallow, I needed help from my friend which was a nuisance. This hotel has a large number of more senior guests so please think about this. The concierge organised a car and driver for a day and two half days which was fantastic and very informative. I believe the driver was called Joseph, he and his son in law were well worth the money
There is pretty much nothing that this hotel or it's brilliant staff can be faulted for! The hotel itself is beautiful, the grounds are fantastic, the new infinity pool is stunning, the breakfasts are absolutely the best and there is nothing, and I mean nothing that could be any better or more welcoming than the incredible staff! Although all are wonderful, a special mention goes to the Manager, Neville, and to the front desk staff member Loredana! Oh, and of course Ivan and his colleagues at the pool who couldn't do enough for each and every customer, all with a smile! Oh yes, and of course, Canadian Mitch in the restaurant is wonderful as well! If I gave a rating of 5 with a few things still remaining to be done to complete the recent renovations, can you just imagine what the ratings will be when all is done! Please, do not go to this hotel! We want to keep it a secret all for ourselves!!! Well done Phonecia staff! You are the best!!!!
Beautiful hotel, rooms, garden and pool with a great view! Best breakfast ever on a terrace overlooking the bay. Most of alll the staff who go out of their way to make your stay just perfect. Specially like to mention mr Neville at reception denk, very professional, great sense of humor and able to answer all questions and solve any problem within minutes. Lifetime global traveller with Hyatt, but certainly will be back at this hotel soon!
Gorgeous Lobby! Gorgeous Hotel and Wonderful Service!!! They are not expensive for the level of service and great feeling! The building is gorgeous next to central Bus stop which is super convenient. Food is delicious and everything is done with great taste with great attention to details! It was a perfect ending to our great journey!
This hotel is well situated for an easy walk into Valletta and also a walk to central bus station giving cheap access to all parts of Malta. The bedrooms I believe have been renovated, I cannot comment as we were not allocated an updated room, although we paid full price! Two single beds bound together with cable tie on legs, very 5 star! Ours was on the first floor, these are very noisy. No pictures on the walls and a very sloppy decoration has been carried out, paint on over bed light fitngs. Fifties wicker furniture was nice perhaps glass tops would be good, easier to clean. The bathroom newly fitted, please note to management a towel ring on both sides of basin would have been good for two people sharing, we hung one hand towel on light fitting. The night time 'turn down' service is very amusing. The bed is turned down on both sides but no attempt made to tidy pillows or smooth bed linen, looked very amateurish. Free soft drinks and water in small fridge but not replenished you have to phone reception, housekeeping don't look after this. Breakfast area lovely we sat on terrace overlooking gardens. On the whole buffet good. However, it seemed to us that everything is rationed, even water. Water bottles are not available on the buffet neither is a selection of juices. If you want water you have to ask, we did note that some received bottles and others a half glass. Only orange joice available if you want a different juice you must ask. Defeated the idea of a buffet. The pool area is lovely, not finished workmen, cranes, drilling and hammering going on behind the bar, not mentioned when we booked. This fact is denied, when we asked at reception on check-in if pool area was finished we were told 'Yes'! Free wine, white or rose one type of each and a local lager. I would prefer to pay and choose. Sandwiches which are charged for are on white bread, very dry and not appealing. The bar and small terrace for an evening drink is lovely. This hotel will I am sure get there, mostly the staff are lovely. You seem to have to ask for everything, some things should just be available. Personal choice is denied its guests at this hotel. There seems to be a silent conflict between the old guard and the new, I hope the new wins!
Great location near the entry to the old city and recently renovated, the Phoenicia, to my mind, did everything right. It is clean, elegant, comfortable, with good service and quality of materials. They have a beautiful salon and dining area with great views of the old wall. It looks like they are working on the pool area. The fountain in front of the hotel will be restored and placed back soon so to meet the 2018 year of Valletta as the cultural city of Europe. I was in room 424 that looks out the front onto a terrace below. Nice interior décor. It was easy to sleep because the room had blackout curtains and must have had some kind of soundproofing because it was quiet. The king size bed was comfortable. They give you robes, slippers, plenty of absorbent towels, various toiletries, a coffee maker with cups provided and a mini-bar stocked with water and a few other drinks at no cost to you. There is a safe, iron and ironing board, plenty of hangers. Laundry service was fast. I found the temperature controls to work well. The bathroom has a shower/tub that functions well but is very slippery. Be careful getting in and out. I actually sat down for the shower because I was afraid of falling. They also have a towel heater that worked well. The bathroom has one sink but is a good size. The concierge and everyone at the desk did all they could to please us. They arranged for a driver,( Renato, who was fabulous) and helped us with reservations and information. Breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking the city and old walls. They offer a sumptuous buffet with all one could want. We had dinner inside because it had rained and was a bit windy. The food was very good and service excellent. I think this establishment deserves praise for the good service, friendliness, luxury and comfort offered.
