This was our first trip to Malta and we were recommended the Phoenicia by good friends who had stayed there previously . As we were away for the Christmas week we wanted to be within easy walking distance of the many wonderful sights that Valletta has to offer and The Phoenicia could not be better situated. This is a beautiful hotel which we believe has been recently refurbished to an extremely high standard. The rooms were well appointed and spotlessly clean and had a " turn down " service every evening which is always a nice touch . The staff in every area of the hotel could not be more polite and willing to help with every request we had. Breakfast was also of a high standard with lots of choice . We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who is thinking of visiting Malta and Valletta in particular . As for us , we will definitely return to the Phoenicia when we next visit Malta.
Nothing should be average about this iconic hotel, with it's fantastic views from the room balconies and the gardens, and its location from which all of Valletta is strolling distance. But its let down by its chefs and housekeeping. The restaurant food is average to awful, judging by the Christmas lunch and the New Year’s Eve dinner. At least one of the courses was inedible and the menu uninspiring. A good breakfast buffet is enhanced by a hot station manned by an ever-obliging young chef to cook your eggs the way you like it, except for benedict and kippers which must be ordered at the table. On one occasion the kippers were off. Breakfast service is friendly and efficient. Alexandra was outstanding. The Palm Court Lounge is salubrious and spacious with a pianist most evenings, and serves snacks of good quality. The club bar has the ambiance of a gentleman's club with excellent service provided by Ivan and co. Room cleaning was not up to the expected standard, items requested were not replenished automatically and the beds were turned down at about 6pm, when guests are getting ready to go out for the evening. There were glimpses of the past, in the excellent service provided by the front desk, managed by Neville, ably assisted by Carmen and Rita, among others and the Concierge parking by the ever ready and friendly Malcolm and Jonathan. We stayed from Christmas eve to New Years day. Christmas was spoilt by the food and lack of any festive decorations or Christmas spirit. By contrast, New Year’s Eve, apart from the meal, was most enjoyably spent dancing in the Lounge to a very good band, into the early hours. We have given this hotel an average rating, which it is now, but it has the potential of becoming one of the best.
Top service, room was lovely, central location! Perfect!! :) Very close to Valletta's bus station! The room was spotless and beautiful! I would highly recommend you booking! Live band was also present New Years Eve :)!
My partner and I stayed at the Phoenicia for a week just prior to Christmas, and I can honestly say it was one of the best hotel stays I've ever had. Check in was swift and painless, with the ever-helpful concierge staff whisking our bags up to the room. The room itself was very nice. Everything was immaculately clean, and there were some nice touches like the complimentary beverages in the mini-bar. The hotel stands in extensive grounds, and is sufficiently set back from the road to ensure that traffic/construction noise isn't a problem. The hotel is in an excellent location, adjacent to the Valletta City Gates and the 'Triton Fountain', with the bus station nearby. At the time of writing (December 2017) there was a lot of construction work still ongoing around the fountain plaza, in preparation for Valletta being 'European Capital of Culture 2018'... but visitors shouldn't be put off at all, as the site seems to be well-managed with pedestrians sufficiently 'fenced off' from any active areas. The fountain plaza seemed to be nearing completion, and future visitors will be able to reap the benefits, as it looks like it'll be a fantastic space when complete. Finally.... I must make mention of the best thing about our stay at the Phoenicia, namely, the staff.... Everyone working at the hotel, was absolutely lovely. They couldn't have been any more helpful or friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for them. If we return to Malta..... I know where we'll be staying!
We really enjoyed our recent stay at the Phoenicia - it's an iconic hotel which has recently been refurbished to a high standard. The hotel occupies a great location near to all the sights of Valletta and although there are building works adjacted to the hotel these did not inconvenience us and when complete in early 2018 the location will be even better. The staff are extremely helpful and offer a very good level of service. Two things I would particularly recommend - a 4th floor (top) executive room as the views are impressive and kippers for breakfast !!!
The Phoenicia is in a great location right at the main gates to Valletta. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome. We particularly enjoyed mingling with other guests at the Manager's Thursday night reception. Top notch champagne served along with delicious food. The breakfast buffet is a winner too. Try to negotiate the buffet with your rate as you will want to eat there everyday. The grounds of the hotel are extensive and beautiful, essentially in a park like setting. Wish I had brought my bathing suit as the pool is heated and magnificent. The room was just beautiful too. We loved the hotel and staff and hope to return some day soon.
My wife and I have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Phoenicia over the Xmas period. We have been to Valletta many times but this was our first actual stay in the town. The Phoenicia is a simply a very good Hotel with the potential of being a Great Hotel, the room was one of the best that I have ever stayed in, the public areas really pleasant and very comfortable. I had only booked a basic room on the front of the Hotel, so we did not get a great view, just car parks and a football pitch, but the Hotel was booked for its location not the view. 99% of the staff were totally up to the job, polite, friendly & helpful, one sole exception, the lady on reception when I tried to book lunch for Xmas Day, NO you have not booked with a very terse manor, no alternative offered. A later visit to reception with another staff member secured a table in another room, simple.
Lovely Christmas break at the refurbished Phoenicia. The trickiest part proved to be booking - we needed an accessible room for my elderly mother. Details on accessibility were a bit thin on the ground on the Phoenicia website, and now seem to have totally disappeared since I booked last year. Hence this review and some photographs for anyone in a similar position. I think there are 2 accessible standard rooms with walk-in showers and twin beds, although the hotel tells me the suites can also be converted. Our room was on the 2nd floor, overlooking the roof and over the treetops towards Grand Harbour. Once the works around the Triton fountain have been completed there'll also be a good view to the left over to the Valletta main gate. The room was quiet and comfortably furnished, although it did seem to be located about the farthest possible distance from the (small - max 5 persons) lift. The glass screen on the shower is movable, so the shower could possibly accommodate a wheelchair if necessary, although I don't think the rooms are really designed for this and the height of the sink and arrangement of cupboard doors in the room itself might then be tricky to navigate. With only a walking stick to contend with however, we were fine, although some more hooks in the bathroom would be helpful. See pictures for grab rail, pull chord etc., and there was a phone in both bedroom and bathroom for emergencies. The shower controls do seem rather unnecessarily complicated, but we worked it out in the end! As others have commented, the facilities and service in the hotel are second to none - extremely helpful and attentive staff, lovely restaurants, beautiful gardens etc. There is chair lift if required at the main door; taxis can draw up directly besides it. Very relaxing Christmas break - thank you.
The Phoenicia is a complete delight. The understated elegance of the rooms, the glorious bars and restaurants, the stunning gardens and pool area and most of all the wonderful staff make this place truly 5 star. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this lovely hotel. Thank you to all of the staff, you made our stay incredibly special.
We stayed 3 nights pre Xmas in a standard superior room in this wonderful luxury hotel. We enjoyed the wonderful location just outside the city gate and right near bus terminal so handy for travelling all over Malta. Whilst the standard room is compact in size for 2 people, the bed linen and mattress were luxurious and the large bathroom with bath was an added treat. The great service from the friendly staff and wonderful breakfast and food in the lounge bar made the stay extra special. Highly recommend a stay here especially with the good value deals direct on hotel site.
