We decided to visit Valletta as it is the city of culture this year. We could not have picked a better located hotel as it is just outside of the city walls with lovely views over the harbours. The public areas are beautifully decorated and spacious with a very attractive breakfast serving a reasonable breakfast buffet (included in our room rate). It is unusual for us to stay more than one or two nights in a hotel but we were very happy to stay here for 5 nights. The rooms are very compact - we had an executive room but were glad of the small balcony for a bit of extra outdoor space. The bathrooms are also compact with a shower over the bath which was a bit awkward and I would have preferred some local toiletries rather than the brand they have chosen which seems to be everywhere. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant here and the staff are mostly very friendly and helpful. It is a short walk to the beautiful and interesting town of Valletta with lots of excellent restaurants and fascinating places to visit. The hotel has a very attractive outdoor pool area which is a reasonable walk through pretty gardens. It was quite blustery during our visit but still lovely to sit near the pool. It was a shame that the spa had not opened yet - this will be a great addition to the hotel as there didn't seem to be much in the way of good spas nearby. Highly recommended for a lovely relaxing visit to Valletta. If we were to return to Malta we would definitely stay here again.
The Phoenicia is excellent in many ways. The bedrooms are well appointed and nicely furnished. The bathrooms work well and are attractive. The public rooms are lovely. The reception and concierge staff are knowledgeable. The breakfast is magnificent. Our one point at issue is the tour company they employ daily in the main reception which visitors like us use because it's so simple. They represent the hop-on hop-off busses with Malta Tours and Simply Sightseeing which have a bad name and poor Trip Advisor reviews including ours. So the hotel's association with this company reflects negatively on their own quality. They also offer some individual and interesting tours and these are the ones to go for. If a hotel like this is to have someone from the outside selling tours in their reception, it should make sure they reflect the same level of quality which this hotel achieves.
Always a pleasure to pop in to the Phoenicia for lunch, drinks or coffee. Service excellent, staff very pleasant. Interior beautiful as are flower displays . Coffee Shop now open but I prefer The Palm Court.
Stayed here for a few days last week (End of March) Valletta is a lovely place and this hotel is the best. very clean, and happy friendly staff ,amazing room with amazing view , one of the best hotels I have stayed in and have stayed in a few , they have recently ,have to say is quite luxurious and has the biggest gardens i have seen, could happily spend the day walking around the gardens, the shops are just a couple of minutes walk where they have everything you need, would definitely go back
Having decided to go to Malta this hotel was an excellent choice. The location is just at the entrance of the old town which could not be better. The room and service was excellent and would highly recommended staying. The breakfast range and staff could not be improved.
Have already written 2 reviews. Have stayed on approximately 10 occasions. On last occasion felt that standards not quite as good. Breakfast service not as slick as usual. Tables not cleared and serve somewhat hit and misss. Choice on buffet did not appear to be quite as extensive. Crumbs and food left on chairs. In room stains on chairs and water not particularly hot. Could stand under shower running fully hot without problem. On positive note Neville and front of house team were great as usual as were the bar staff in the evening. We enjoyed our stay in Valletta as much as ever, but did not find The Phoenicia to be as good as normal.
This place has all it takes to be great. The location just outside of the old town is perfect, the infinity pool with a view on the bay on on Sliema is nice (but rather shallow for swimming), and the rooms are recently renovated and very comfortable. Two restaurants, a main bar, and a pool bar provide lots of choice, if you don't want to go to one of the many restaurants nearby. What lacks is the quality of service. Our pre-booked airport transfer got forgotten (the hotel nicely made up for it, though), food orders take a long time - both at breakfast and at the pool, and our bill had incorrect items. The concierge service is good and friendly, and gave us good tips in terms of restaurants and sightseeing.
I spent a superb Easter break at the Phoenicia with my family. The hotel is one of those early XX century “grand hotels” with a lot of charme, yet recently beautifully revamped and restored to very high standards. Location is perfect, right at the walls of La Valletta, which makes it easy both to walk in the city and to drive out of it to explore the island. The staff is great, very attentive. A special mention to Mario P. from the concierge, who was absolutely crucial in helping us organising our days, inclusive of boat trips, car rental, restaurants booking, hard to get ticket finding, available around the clock. I hope the hotel management keep people like him in the right regard as having this sort of support is really a key reason for me to choose a Hotel of this standard. Two areas of improvement: the main restaurant which in the one evening we spent there was unbelievably slow to bring our one-dish order (>1hour wait), and the SPA which is still undergoing renovation.
Beautiful hotel recently redecorated. Staff are very polite, friendly and helpful. Room with harbour view was very comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated. Lovely bathroom. Mini bar was complimentary with soft drinks and beers. Lovely breakfast with a wide choice of food. Waitresses very attentive. There are two restaurants for evening dinner. I read the reviews and have to agree with them in general. Menus are limited and the service is slow at times. I was not impressed and would not recommend eating there. A shame because everything else about this hotel is great.
A thoroughly enjoyable week, much anticipated and not dissapointed. Hotel Phoenicia is beautiful. The photos of the lounge and restaurant do not do them justice. They are superb. Our room was large enough and comfortable. With a free mini bar with beer and soft drinks. The choice at breakfast was astounding. The gym, spa and pool were out of action due to the time of year and so we did not spend much time in the hotel. We had a couple of meals in the cafe, the first was excellent and great value. After that the second included a dissapointing Waldorf Salad though my wife's burger was good. The location of the hotel is perfect. Just across from the pedestrian entrance to Valletta and also the bus station, there is no better location in Malta. The hotel staff are very helpful. When we return to Malta, we will stay here again, no question.
