This is our third visit to the Monica and each time my wife and I have been well looked after by all the staff, especially reception and in the restaurant. The Monica is situated in an ideal position and once you have sorted out the street plan it is easy to find your way about nerja town. There is a one euro bus (linea 1) which starts and finishes almost outside the hotel, and if one stays on it one gets a complete tour of the town and surrounding residential areas which gives one some idea of how the town is laid out.another bonus is that directly across the road from the hotel are several cafes serving huge drinks at cheap cheap cheap prices, and two brandies constitutes half a bottle. The beds in the hotel are very comfortable and the rooms are well serviced daily. In the evening a stroll into the bustling town is a must and the shops, whilst very touristy are a real magnet. All in all we think the Monica is the ideal place to stay and we will be returning next year.

We have just returned from the RIU Monica and as this was our first visit we did not know what to expect . The staff were very pleasant and could not do enough for us . The food is very good and there is plenty of choice ( although they could do with some tips for not over cooking the bacon ) . As this is and adult only is nice and quiet and a break from the kids . The drinks are quite expensive but directly opposite the hotel there are a number of bars which are very respectable and the prices are very good ( a pint of San Miguel €2.00 ). Down by the pool there are a number of sun beds ( could do with a bit updating ) but we didn't have to get up at stupid o'clock and reserve one . When we went into breakfast about 8 am we put our towels out then . As this was November when we went , the pool was a bit cool but i managed to get in a few times . The beach is directly out of the back gate which is a bonus as well . The main shopping was about 1/2 a mile away with lots of Tapas bars and food places as well . Overall it was a very good holiday and we will be returning soon . John & Nicky

We returned again a year on and I have to say that the food has improved greatly. Also the area around the pool felt less cramped. All in all this a very nice hotel, in a good part of town especially when the festival is on. Drinks are expensive but there are 5 bar just across the road will return

We have just recently spent a lovely weekend at riu monica it's everything you need to have a lovely holiday excellent location literally on the pretty beach. Food was self service which you literally stop helping yourself to as it was so good and a bottle of wine with your evening meal a fair hotel price . Hotel bedrooms perfect clean good view . Bars opposite a must for evening drinks to sit and watch .certainly recommend riu monica and a second visit can't wait .

Once again I’ve returned to my litttle paradisiac oasis,a k a Nerja. And once again I’m returning to the Riu Monica. From the moment you step in, you feel like you’re at home. The location ( on Torrecilla beach) is perfect, and of course they had me at ’adults only’ ;) Foodwise, you’ll be spoilt for choice as well, good thing you can take long strolls around Nerja to burn off the calories! The hotel itself is just as wonderful as it appears on the website, but for me it’s the staff that makes the difference. Just like for restaurants, you come for the food, but your returning visits are because of the service and I only have compliments to address to the Riu Monica in that department! The staff is very professional and really attentive to your needs ( special kudos to Lola at the front desk, and Jose Luis in the dining room!) Christine, the Tui on-site representative, recommended the Cordoba excursion and we had the best time! Our guides Carmena and Luis were so knowledgeable yet never boring, be ready to take a gazillion pictures -and wear sensible shoes to explore the narrow cobblestone streets! Look no further if you’re looking for the perfect place to stay at in Nerja!

We have just returned from a relaxing week's holiday at the Riu Monica. The hotel has been fully refurbished in recent times and is now a lovely modern hotel. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean by an excellent cleaning team, the staff are all without exception very friendly and helpful. Food was very good with a reasonable amount of choice. There are plenty of places to sit and relax. Bar prices were in line with the bars and restaurants opposite. However the hotel is really only suitable for an over 60 clientele and this is something that the hotel can do nothing about unless it starts to take families. We discovered that the walls were paper thin when we received a telephone call from our neighbours at 8am one morning telling us to turn our TV down as they could hear every word. The TV had been on for only about 5 minutes and was not loud as we could only just hear it. We found that the hotel was full of people who had visited many times and were very keen to point out how bad it was now compared to how it used to be. In the dining room the older age group had their own "behaviour style" by being first to the buffet before they had even sat at their table - the soup urn was a particular favourite! Round the pool was deathly quiet pretty much all day with most guests being fast asleep with their mouths open! A few simple improvements would be new sun loungers as they sag in the middle and were very uncomfortable. The towels in the room were also very small and well worn. The chairs in the main bar definitely need replacing as they looked out of place compared to the more modern and new furniture everywhere else. In summary, if you are under 60 years of age think carefully before booking.

Although we have been to the Riu Monica several times this was our first visit since the redevelopment. On the whole we think the new layout and dining terrace is a great improvement (not sure about the blue bench seating outside the main dining room though). The staff were as pleasant and helpful as always. As we were upgraded to one of the large rooms on the 7th floor we cannot truly compare the redesign of the rooms; our one had a walk-in shower big enough to hold a party in! We have two criticisms. The first is minor - we think that the decor in the new dining room is a bit clinical and has lost the previous 'mediterranean' feel. The second is more important to us - you are not allowed to walk or put loungers on the grass areas, there are even notices to this effect!! It is much more restful relaxing on the grass under a palm tree than the hard heat reflective surface around the pool. This also has the effect of leaving the fish pond and boule/petanque court stranded. The Monica's sister hotel in Meloneras, Gran Canaria, is situated in a large and wonderful ornate palm garden and allows loungers on the grass. The new no children policy certainly seems to have increased the average age to well over 50. On two previous visits we took grandchildren with us, this is now no longer an option.

Just spent 10 nights at this hotel. This was our seventh visit and once again we weren't disappointed . Staff are very friendly with good language skills. The bedrooms are simple but clean. Tvs and fridge. Paying extra for the use of the room safe seems a little over the top, but best to be careful with money and passports. However free use would be a nice gesture especially for the many guests returning again and again. Gardens well kept although you are not allowed to walk on the grass to view a pretty fish pond ? What's the point of a focal point if guests can't view it ?? Swimming pool clean and towels provided. Food excellent choice and hot dishes hot. Chefs cooking all the time to provide food fresh. Marvellous holiday. Would highly recommend this hotel.

As you would expect this is if the high standard of all Riu hotels.Fabulous location. Hotel clean, comfotable beds, bathrooms good but does lack the normal toiletries supplied at hotels of this standard, and again had to pay for room safe which ither hotels provide free. Food as always excellent all staff ,from reception, bar, dining room to chambermaids absolutley brilliant a real credit to the hotel. Couple of downsides room overlooked dining room roof and not much sun in afternoon, and of course towels on sun beds to reserve them even though the hotel requests NOT to and no one did anything about it. I have stayed in hotels where your possessions are moved to reception if you try to reserve a bed before 10am, I think this is a much better idea. Overall though a fabulous hotel & staff will visit again.

This hotel is in a lovely situation overlooking the sea and being only a 15 minutes stroll from the town center. Our room was very spacious and extremely clean. The slight disappointment with our room was the view being on the side of the hotel overlooking the flat roof of the dining area. Unfortunately as we were on the first floor we were not elevated enough to see over the flat roof area to the sea beyond. The food at breakfast and dinner was plentiful and varied but maybe lacking anything spectacular. There is one on site Spanish restaurant serving a small set menu of tapas, mains and desserts. One downside however was the menu did not seem to change the whole week we were there. There is a lovely restaurant next door to the hotel called Merendero Cobos. It is open lunch times only but serves fabulous fish cooked on an open bbq and other local dishes with great service and is definitely worth visiting. The staff at the hotel were all very curtious, polite and professional and always happy to help. There are plenty of bars opposite the hotel if you fancy a change from the hotel and would especially recommend the Spanish one called Sal Pimienta for good service and drinks. We did not however try the food there. All in all we could not find anything negative to say about this hotel and would definitely recommend it.
