This is a really good hotel, with a fabulous coastal position. Our room on the 10th floor was really good, well equipped and had a great view of the Atlantic - we kept the patio door open every night to hear the sound of the waves crashing on to the rocks! The food in the hotel restaurant was always good - with great selections at breakfast and dinner. The staff in the restaurant were particularly friendly and helpful - as were many of the other staff members around the hotel, from the diving instructor to the guys who give out the towels for the pools - all very friendly, smiley, polite and helpful. The food was also really good in both the Italian restaurant and the local Portuguese restaurant across the road. The dine-around option was a great way to add variety. On the whole a really relaxing & enjoyable break & we hope to return.
Built on a hill side, there are lots of lifts and stairs to deal with. The pool area is a little bland as it's concrete without foliage or plants. The buffet breakfast and supper are well managed and the food is plentiful. The room for Zumba and Pilates is not air conditioned which is a pity as the teachers were talented. This hotel is impersonal and without character. The staff, however, were excellent.
We have just returned from an enjoyable week's stay. The buffet restaurant was very good, with an excellent choice of meals. I'm not a fan of desserts, but there was a very good selection of cheeses on offer. Sparkling wine with breakfast was a very good start to the day! We also ate at Mama Mia and Koi Sushi restaurants. We had very good meals in both, but particularly liked Koi Sushi. All the staff were friendly and helpful. There were plenty of sun beds available by the pools. It was a bit of a walk to the town centre, but no problem for us. I would recommend this hotel.
Hotel was excellent. Food good with the great opportunity for the "dine around "menu meaning we could eat in one of three different restaurants as well as the hotel dining area. Room was enormous with brilliant sea views. Recommend that anyone staying upgrades to sea view if not already there. Also the higher the better - 6th floor or above - for the best vista. Pool was a bit of a trek - inevitable when hotels are virtually on the side of a cliff - the nature of Madeira ! But lifts down to the poolside - or stairs if you're fit ! Gym thrown in (which I neglected to use but a great addition ) Staff were all very friendly, even with those less appreciative guests (not us I have to say) Bar was a bit pricey but good pub across the road with live music most nights. Unless you're a fan of down beat fifties type crooners I would avoid the music in the hotel bar ! Plentiful buses into Funchal or a twenty minute walk. We loved Madeira itself, not having been before and the hotel just added to the whole holiday experience. We will go to this hotel again - a first for us at our advanced ages !!
Not long arrived, we have stayed at many 5 star hotels around the world and this hotel in some areas need work to be a 5 star. We would rate it 3-4 star. The room is ok, bathroom needs a little care, even if the sealant around the bath was repaired and the shower was de scaled would brighten it up. There is mould around the bath. Outside areas like the basketball court is nit usable, just concrete heaven, this also would not take much to put right, just corking the ground and a new net that's all. The squash court is really bad with the walls have poor repair work and partially coming away. The gym is ok but you have to go across the road and all the way round the other side to get to it and is nothing special, the Mamma Mia restaurant is also over that way. Not tried that yet. Had a walk road the spa area and that seems great, 5 star which doesn't match everything else. Will update more later
The double room had a splendid view overlooking the ocean. The ensuite bathroom was spacious with his & her sinks & good shower over bath. Cleanliness was superb. On returning to our room from a walk around the delightful town of Funchal on my birthday we found a bottle of Sparkling wine in a cooler and a beautiful chocolate birthday cake taking 'centre stage' on the table. I was ready to thank my husband for the wonderful surprise only to be informed that it was a surprise to my husband as well and my thanks were to the kind hotel staff!!! A lovely, appreciated gesture.
Vidamar offers an excellent overall holiday experience with plenty of amenities and reasonably close to Funchal. Our stay was from 11 - 18 May 2017 definitely a very busy time although this had little effect on the ability to use the pools and sun loungers or the service in the restaurants. The dine around option is particularly good and allows you to switch evening or lunch dining in the available restaurants. Although we didn't try Koi Sushi we enjoyed return visits to Casa das Espetadas and Mama Mia. Food choice and quality is good in all restaurants and the choice of external or internal dining added to the experience. The folk dancing at Casa das Espetadas is worth seeing. Meals at the main buffet style Ocean Restaurant were good with plenty of choice both at breakfast and dinner. The young lady at Mama Mia was especially welcoming efficient and friendly. Our room was spacious and included tables and easy chair/settee for relaxing in the room plus comfortable chairs and a table on the private balcony. Plenty of inside lounge areas are spread around the hotel and the external garden areas and sea deck pools also provide an adequate supply of sun loungers. The shops restaurants and marina of Funchal is an easy 25 to 30 minute walk from the hotel. We would certainly visit again
We stayed at the Vidamar from 09 - 14 May and were very impressed by everything about it. Location is very good, views from the rooms overlooking the terrace, pool areas and the sea were lovely. Very spacious hotel, spotlessly clean, light and roomy in all public areas, plenty of places to sit and relax. We were on the 7th floor and had great views, including over the olive gardens. Staff were, without exception, very friendly and accommodating. We found the food in the Ocean Restaurant to be of a very high standard although we agree with the lack of labelling of food items and the hot food inevitably being lukewarm by the time you got it to your table. Great to be able to sit outside to eat at breakfast and dinner on the large terrace, or inside, whatever you wished. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to others.
The hotel was well appointed and spotlessly clean. The room,on floor 2, was large with 2 double beds & a large sitting area. The balcony had a nice view but the noise from the pool below was distracting. Access to the bath & shower was very difficult as the glass screen was fixed & we never found out how to use the shower satisfactorily. Half board was compulsory, but the quality of food in the self service restaurant (closed at lunchtime) was mediocre & the only alternative for dinner within the hotel was a Japanese restaurant. The "dine around" option was good, but that meant going up to the main road, sometimes in the rain. Some of the reception staff were helpful & friendly but others were just the opposite & not locally knowledgeable. No tourist information on view. We have been to Madeira many times but have enjoyed better stays in 4 star hotels.
We had a lovely stay at the Vidamar. All the staff were very friendly and most helpful. The food was excellent with plenty of choice. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. So much to do at the hotel or just relax by the pools or in the lovely garden.
