This is a good hotel with many attractive features, although not in the luxury category. Most of the staff are charming and genuinely want to help. Our room had a delightful view over the sea and harbour and was very large with two king size beds, but only one bedside light in the middle. There was a good shower in the bathroom and towels were changed daily. However, for seven consecutive days our room was not cleaned before 3.30 in the afternoon, in spite of two requests for a morning clean. The turn-down bed service arrived far too early at 6pm just as we were getting changed for the evening. The food in the buffet restaurant was adequate and, on one or two occasions, was very good, but very few guests take dinner in the hotel and the atmosphere suffered. We would not recommend taking half board in this hotel. One can eat better meals at a cheaper price with waiter service in the many local restaurants within walking distance. In addition, because of the high ratio of staff to guests in the restaurant, the service was over-bearing and we grew tired of constant interruptions to fill our wine and water glasses and remove our plates the very moment we put knives and forks down! We enjoyed the spa and pool areas which had comfortable sun loungers. There was very little entertainment in the hotel, apart from in the buffet restaurant and one of the bars during “happy hour”.
We stayed here for a short break (4 nights). On arrival all the guests were given a glass of sparkling wine whilst checking in - the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. They must have overheard my wife wish me a happy birthday as, later on when we returned to the room there was a bottle of wine and a lovely birthday cake - a lovely touch and much appreciated. The room we had was a garden view with balcony - it was huge, clean and quiet. Beds very comfy and lovely bathroom. The hotel is big with superb views from the gardens and the facilities are great - we used the pools (upper one heated, sea level pool is an unheated sea water pool) and there is access to the sea via either steps or a ladder. The gym is well set up with modern equipment. We also played tennis which is a little pricey - 10 euros for the court plus 2.50 euros per racket and 1 euro per ball - the equipment hire fee is not refunded upon return !!! But the tennis court is well maintained and has a good surface. The breakfast is simply superb - huge buffet of hot and cold food. Overall, this hotel is one of the best we have stayed at - food and facilities superb and the staff always friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble for them. We will definitely return.
This was our first time visiting Funchal and we enjoyed our stay at the Cliff Bay. We had a superior sea view room which did not disappoint! The views were fantastic and the amenities met all expectations. There is construction on a new development to the hotel although we were not disturbed by this the hotel provided a credit to all guests staying adjacent to the construction. This did not impact our stay at all. The included breakfasts were very good and the service at the various restaurants and throughout the hotel was excellent. I highly recommend Cliff Bay.
Stayed here again in January with our friends. We have been many times and it never fails to deliver the best experience you can want. As I don’t like lifts I e- mailed the hotel before arriving and asked if the limited sea view room we had booked could be on floor 2 or 3 as they have slopes to the rooms. They were able to accommodate my request even though they were full of which I was grateful. If you want to be looked after then stay at The Cliff Bay no it’s not cheap but you get what you pay for if you like all inclusive hotels then no it’s not for you. Will be returning in June so see you all then.
This was our first visit to Maderia and whilst the weather was disappointing, we had a wonderful holiday due to the quality of the hotel and the facilities it provides. It has all been said before but things worth repeating are the quality of all the staff and the service they provide, not pretentious but genuinely top quality, the spacious rooms (Funchal view faces East and looks out on a beautiful view over Reids, the harbour and Funchal), the position, 20 minutes walk to the centre of Funchal or 10 minutes walk the other way to a modern and attractive promenade, breakfasts like we've never had before and extensive grounds with numerous places to sit and admire the spectacular scenery. Finally, on arrival the Receptionist told us about the building work and apologised if we were disturbed by noise - we were given both an upgrade and reduction in the tariff to compensate us but in fact never heard a sound!! We most certainly will be returning.
We visited this hotel most days of our holiday. For 2 reasons, firstly the view from the drinks terrace is fabulous particularly at sunset and secondly they have happy hour between 5 and 6 each day. Combine the 2 and its good for the soul. The hotel has atmosphere that fits the consistent good reviews it receives, all the public areas are clean fresh and the staff particularly in the lounge bar where helpful and polite even though we where not staying at the hotel. What a way to watch the day to turn into evening
My husband and I chose Funchal for a week's holiday after Christmas and to celebrate New Year. We decided to stay at the Cliff Bay hotel, which was a good choice. This 5 star hotel is situated in a really beautiful location exactly as the name describes. We chose a sea view room with balcony and the view was wonderful, overlooking the nicely kept garden out to sea where you could often see the replica Santa Maria as it sailed across the bay. The room was a good size and made for a comfortable stay. Only the sound of the sea could be heard at night, so aided a good restful sleep. There were 2 restaurants one a la cart, the other buffet and also a bar. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic! You could eat an infinite choice of nice fruits, cakes, etc and enjoy all this outside in the beautiful garden, inside the glass covered veranda or in the main dining room. We chose to eat dinner in the buffet restaurant of the hotel, which was not a good choice. For the first 3 days this was ok but afterwards the food was repetitive, and not nice. Too many themes were not related to Portugal or Madeira, so I would advise anyone to avoid eating there except for convenience. The waitresses and waiters were really nice and helpful, except for one who was South African, he had a bad mood and this transferred to his work most time and transferred to the customers. His attitude created a bad atmosphere one evening after a waitress suggested I taste a wine of Portuguese origin before accepting the complete bottle as I couldn't find a familiar wine on the menu. I noticed the South African waiter was observing my dialogue with the waitress and actually chastised her for allowing me the "privilege" of tasting the wine first! I speak Portuguese fluently and had to intervene to stop this man from upsetting the waitress any further. His attitude was really not correct especially for a hotel of 5 stars. The area around the hotel has allot of great restaurants with really goods prices, bistros and bars near by. The centre of Funchal is a short walk away. Funchal is small but a nice place to enjoy a quiet holiday. We will definitely go there again. Show quoted text
The hotel is perfectly and professionally managed, not warm and hearty, typical in Portugal, but efficient and friendly. Facility, although aged, is well maintained and everything works. Average age of guests could be well above retirement, calm, nice, and quiet, but not most suitable environment for families with small kids. Foods and beverages are of best quality, as the services.
Slightly less formal than Reid's but still very smart, although can seem a bit impersonal. Very well kept gardens and lots of places to hide and relax. Service was good, and I would definitely consider visiting again
We have just returned from another great holiday at the Cliff Bay Hotel. Everything about this hotel is good - the facilities, rooms views food and staff are the best. Whenever we come back I have nothing bur praise for the whole holiday and this year is no exception. We will definitely be going back for more!! (and the weather was great too - no rain and sunshine every day this January)
