More than a 4 star...but not quite 5. Perfect location for exploring around Funchal. Yes it is an uphill walk from the main city, however, what hotel isn't?! There are plenty of restaurants in the immediate (flat)area so you don't need to do it if you don't want to! Didn't get a great first impression on the hotel mainly due to the member of staff at check in. Normally upon check in providing your name (and a copy of your passport) is more than enough to complete. However, the member of staff wouldn't process us until we provided our booking reference so they could confirm they have given us the right room type. Having booked through an agent this was not an easy find! There are better ways of handling this. We were given a lovely, if not eye wateringly high, sea view room on the 17th floor. Room was to a good standard and lovingly decorated...a definite highlight of our trip. Housekeeping were very efficient and if we put the sign on our door, the rooms was cleaned by the time we returned from Breakfast. However, sometimes we had to remake the bed, while the top duvet was on, the under sheet wasn't made and the mattress(and mattress protector) all on show as soon. We had a late checkout and for this reason we kept the "do not disturb" sign on the door as we didn't see the point in having the room changed. Housekeeping were very thorough and actually phoned the room to check we didn't want it cleaning. Other reviews comment on the dated style of the hotel, and while you know the hotel was built a while ago, it does not detract from the hotel itself and there are plenty of modernisations. Wouldn't hesitate to return. Pool staff were great, always friendly and eager to help. It is a shame they don't remove peoples towels who have clearly left them while they are at breakfast. It was always the same loungers and the same people. While there is a sign by the pool, any sun lounger reserving is never acted on.
We stayed on the 15th floor with a sea view and the room and views were amazing. The housekeeping was second to none to the point where we had do many towels we couldn't use them all and I'm sure the bed sheets I were clean every day. Breakfast was amazing with everything you could think of on offer. The hotel itself is lovely and the three pools are clean with plenty of sun beds. The only small negative we found was that drinks were extremely expensive in the hotel but I guess you expect that. There are plenty of bars nearby though so it wasn't a problem. We had a fantastic holiday here!!
First impressions, great view from room overlooking the pool and sea. Ideally placed for venturing out but be prepared for hills. We booked half board and hindsight bed and breakfast would have been a preferable option as I feel the dinner menu began to become tired after three days. Some good meals are available locally, Prince Albert I can recommend. Finally unless you are after time share ignore the welcome drink card put under your door to meet in the pub
Pro's 1. Nice facilities inc swimming pools and restaurants 2. Good location 3. Great Irish bar 1 min walk away 4. Nice restaurants nearby Con's 1. Check in was over half an hour late 2. Air con didn't work 3. Plug in bath didn't fit 4. TV didn't work 5. Music in room didn't work 6. Large black dirty stain on pillow case Numerous problems with room, no apologies, they hype on about this holiday will be the time of your life, utter nonsense. Had to complain twice about not being able to use the bath before someone bothered to fix it. The music still didn't work but couldn't be bothered to complain as i wanted to enjoy my holiday, not spend the entire time in reception. Paid a lot of money for a family room. Emailed a complaint and was told if we return they will upgrade us but had to go through them. Its cheaper to do a package deal so pointless. Avoid, so many better hotels in this part of Funchal
I am very surprised by negative comments about this lovely hotel. I can only presume you used one of the "cheep hotel sites" and were given therefor the cheepest room in the place. Staff are very friendly and helpful as are most people in Madeira. The majority of rooms have been totally renovated some like the one we are in, only this year. It is an on going process well out of season causing minimal disturbance to guests . I will be returning next year.
From the moment we checked in we enjoyed the whole experience staying at the Pestana Carlton Hotel, very comfortable room with all anyone could wish for, incredible views over the pools and sea, food excellent, superb eating facilities and the staff made you feel so welcome. We were originally concerned as the brochure described it as a Hotel with 17 floors but built into the cliff side. Eight floors were above the level of the Reception a further five with very private balconies below and even more below the pool area, to the Atlantico pool at sea level, We had the great pleasure of staying in a room with both a sea and bay view and very private balcony with excellent facilities. A full program of evening entertainment with the very comfortable Arcos, and more relaxing Taverna, Pub and Garden Pool Restaurants. A variety of activities to suit all ages and a mere 15 minutes walk into the centre of Funchal which was fascinating and during our stay held the local Wine Festival. Special thanks to Thomson Travel for making the holiday stress free and it does suggests that a return trip may be necessary to see what we missed !!
Just returned from an excellent week in Madeira. We taravelled as a couple and it's our first time in Madeira. We stayed bed and breakfast as we like to eat out and try local restaurants however the breakfast at the hotel was more than adequate and a number of occasions we did not go down until after 10am and they were still topping up the buffets and the egg station was in operation. We also ate in the pub on our first night which was also good quality. Can't comment on hotel restaurants, although they looked nice we did not try them. We had a pool view room on 3rd floor. The room was great , good facilities and spotlessly clean, which we would say the same for the rest of the hotel. The staff were helpful and courteous and had no problems at all. We even took part in their vacation club sales pitch, which was a bit lengthy but very informative, the sales rep put forward a strong case, but it was not a hard sell and she was very pleasant and knowledgable, however it was not for us and we still got our free gift for attending, a boat trip worth £60. We found a pestana be a great base to explore Funchal and greater Madeira. It's only 15mins walk to city centre, 30 mins if you really take your time, once down the hill it's flat all the way, with numerous bars and restaurants in the city and would highly recommend the Garden cafe restaurant, high class Italian and madeiran cuisine. A new hotel is being built next door to the pestana however this did not affect our stay as you cannot see or hear it from the pool or gardens, only seen from from front of hotel and main entrance. Overall a great holiday in a lovely country and would stay again at the pestana Carlton Madeira if we returned to Madeira in the future.
Let's start: - if you want to have a drink on the terrace, get up and get it yourself otherwise you will never get anything. Additional value for the cushions outside, be careful with the menses marks on them. I am sure you will love pigeons throwing your glasses away (with no refund from the hotel or special attention). - I hope you have a good stomach because the breakfast is not always as tasty as it looks. - Be aware of the rules near the swimming pool !!! Depending on who you are, you don't have the same consideration. For example, you can't reserve seats in advance and you cannot use inflatable toys. Strangely, you see inflatable toys in the swimming pool but your towels have been removed. Removed? Yes, but not with delicacy. Thanks to the guy who broke my sunglasses. - Don't be the first one to drink a cup of coffee near the swimming pool as well. The machine has not been double checked and you have the opportunity to drink whatever comes out of the machine. - Don't bother saying "hello, thank you or have a nice day" to the staff, they won't reply to you. If have any trouble or disagreement with them, they dare speak their own language in front of you with no possibilities to understand or explain yourself. More disrespectful than that... well, it doesn't exist. - If you want to enjoy the nice public work on the outside from 8 a.m, please choose the room in front of the mountain. - Room service? I hope you are not in a rush... - Cleaning services? Room perfectly clean; Bathroom? Check the hygiene products before taking a shower. Either it's already opened, or dirty or you can only use 8 bottles of shower gel with no shampoo or conditioner. - I don't even have the heart to talk about so many other disappointments... If you are an adventurer, try this hotel !!! - Best of the best, two out of three receptionists I talked to are either liars or inefficient. I shared my concerns with them especially after a dog kept me up at night because my neighbor's left the dog on the balcony, yelling so loudly that I couldn't sleep before taking my flight at 7 a.m. He signed my complaints, made me a photocopy and assured me that I would get a compensation for all the trouble we've got. What do you think happened? NOTHING !!! Even after sending a second email to understand better the situation, NOTHING !!! Thank you again for this incredible experience !! FYI, I worked in the hospitality industry before and 1% of everything that happened would have got me a immediate dismissal.
Stayed 4th Sept b&n in room 121.Big mistake as this room is on the lower ground floor. Our patio overlooked the pool terrace with lots of sunbed in evidence.I tried to pay for an upgrade to a higher floor but was informed by reception that the hotel was full.On the Thursday we were informed that there would be a thank you barbecue for the timeshare owners to celebrate the opening of the new timeshare block. This meant that total disruption occurred for the next 24 hours. After the barbecue finished the clear up started. This entailed the staff removing all equipment on trollies right passed our room. This went on till after 01:15 in the Morning! Our complaint to reception was met with a shrug. We will not return to this hotel.
I would not say the rooms are to 5* standard at all but I don't think that, for a 5* hotel, our stay was expensive. We stayed on a B&B basis and found the selection at breakfast excellent. We ate lunch at the pool bar most days, which was average. We had a sea view room the16th floor and the views were lovely. The bathroom was very spacious and the toiletries, which were okay, were replenished daily but not the tea/coffee making items. The pillows were really not very comfortable, something I've never had the need to say anywhere else, but both my husband and myself thought the same. The air conditioning was really noisy, even on low and we actually left it off a couple of nights. There were tea stains on the wall above the dressing table which had run down to the bottom and the area around the suitcase stand was really heavily marked. The hotel itself was spotless and the pool area was kept meticulously clean. It was a lovey area to sun bathe in and much better than the other lower pool area which was clinical and concrete with ugly green wire around it. We would eat out each evening and when we returned there would be entertainment which was always to a very good standard. The staff are very pleasant except for those on reception who really lack any personality and are actually quite surly. All in all the hotel was value for money. Yes it has faults and not all 5* quality but I do not think you are paying top 5* price either.
