Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel

Good sized bedroom and ensuite with queen size bed, tastefully furnished. Everything spotlessly clean throughout the hotel and linen changed several times in our one week stay. Lifts take you down to 2 pool areas which are on 2 separate levels and so there are loads of sunbeds. It is well equipped having a games area, indoor pool and jacuzzi. Breakfast buffet was excellent having everything I could think of and the barmeal we had was also very good, if a bit pricey. Great location as it is a10 min walk to Funchal centre and there are also local buses 1,2 and 4 which go from nearby main road for 1.95 euros. All staff very friendly and helpful. The small but well stocked supermarket over the road is also useful. Only slight surprise is that there was no mention of a room service for meals or snacks or laundry service which seemed unusual for a 5 star hotel - not that we wanted it but some people might.

This is the second time we have stayed here and again, it did not disappoint. My mother commented that it's a large hotel that feels like a small one, in all the right ways. So you get all the amenities of a 5star large hotel with the intimate service you'd get at a lux boutique hotel. Really is suitable for all ages of families with loads to do if you like...but also the chance to relax and do nothing if you prefer. Spotlessly clean and reasonably priced food and drink. There are also many bars and restaurants a stone's throw away. Town is a 10 min walk and a mere 5 Euro taxi ride back, if like my mother you cent manage hills. Looking forward to returning.

Booked Madeira mainly hoping for good weather end of October and this hotel seemed very good value. I booked directly with the hotel as we are 2 adults and a 15 year old so wanted best room option possible which was a sea view suite. I specially requested a room on as high a floor as possible and a week before our holiday emailed the hotel to confirm this request and also asking for a corner balcony if possible. We arrived hours before checkin but were delighted to be told that our room was ready. Room was on 12th floor of 18 so that was perfect. On entering the suite we discovered suite was essentially 2 interconnecting rooms, 1 with bedroom and bathroom and the other with sitting area including sofa bed (which was all made up ready for my son) another full bathroom and a 'kitchen' area with under counter fridge, sink and microwave. The fridge was a real bonus for drinks purchased from local shop 2 minutes away. We had 2 separate balconies both quite narrow one of which was a corner balcony overlooking sea on one side and Reeds hotel on the other. 2 chairs and a table on each and we made very good use of the balconies during our stay. Rooms were immaculately clean and kept that way throughout our stay. Both bathrooms had very good over bath showers and our room had double mirrored wardrobes opposite the bathroom door, really good lighting, plug socket and a stool where I could sit and dry my hair (used own dryer) for this alone I would award 5 stars as so rare to find this in ANY hotel. So fair to say the room met and exceeded our expectations. We only had breakfast included which was very good and included a good selection of fresh fruit used the bar a few times but so much choice nearby we really wanted to be out and about. Used all swimming pools indoor and out and swam in the sea most days. All areas again very clean and we really enjoyed the whole experience. Finally the staff throughout were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I couldn't have asked for more from this holiday or this hotel - location was perfect for walking to town and to lido. Just wish we could have stayed longer but we will return.

We have stayed at the Pestana Carlton twice before and enjoyed our visit both times. Therefore booking for a third time. We have a 19 month old baby so we booked the suite so that we would have more room(approx. an extra £500 on top of the cost of the holiday). The suite was a big disappointment. Not in terms of size but in terms of standard, cleanliness and location in the hotel. The bedroom was 4 floors above reception and the bars across the street and all through the night there excessive noise. The carpets were thread bare in areas and stained with god knows what. The plasterwork was chipped and the bathrooms had not been cleaned properly. There was a round table in our room that was wobbly and frankly dangerous. We asked to be moved on our first day but the only other room available was also very dated so we decided to stay put. After 4 days we couldn't take the noise anymore and thankfully we were moved to another suite that didn't face the bars. I was really disappointed at how tired and tatty the room was especially as we had paid so much extra for it. A plus side the Pestana is that the breakfasts are good. The employees friendly and helpful and it is in a good location. However, after this most recent experience we won't be returning.

Perfectly located hotel. Short walk to city and much facilities around. Nice room but a bit noice from the street on backside of hotel. Mainly late parties. Of course sea view would have been nice! Nice service. Fantastic breakfast. Pools could be some degrees warmer.

Although at first disappointed as we booked a sea view and were given mountain view the disappointment didn’t last long, wonderful hotel, after staying at the Pestana Casino Park in February of this year we were told that this hotel was more up-to-date and it is. The casino park was very tired and badly in need of refurbishment where as this is very clean and fresh. It’s a lot more up to date with lovely rooms and surroundings, definitely worthy of its 5 stars. Stayed bed and breakfast which was served from 7-10:30, it had plenty of selection and all was very nice, great friendly staff which are always happy to help. Room was spacious with small but adequate balcony, plenty of storage space for clothes etc, free safe, tv channels a bit poor but seems the same across Madeira, lovely bathroom with bath and overhead shower, hair dryer and all shower gels, boot polish, shower cap freebies you usually get. Fully air conditioned but didn’t need it in November. Gorgeous swimming pool with another pool which you can access at certain times next to the ocean, great pool bar, showers etc. wouldn’t hesitate staying here again.

Great hotel and nice see view. fantastic location.Breakfast enormes selection of everything you wish.We stayed for 15 days this year and we plan to vist in December during Christmas time. The hotel was very clean and friendly personal staff.

Just got back to the UK today, my boyfriend and I stayed here from 27 October to 6 November. We had a great stay and this hotel was pretty good. We booked a twin room and it was big, got a nice comfy bed, big wardrobe and lots of drawers, an average TV (which we didnt mind) and a spacious bathroom with a bathtub and shower head. We also had a small fridge that had complementary drinks, we also had a tray of tea and coffee sachets with a kettle and mugs upon our arrival. We didnt have a sea view which i wish i requested, but this weren't a problem. Maids came everyday and were so lovely, they would make our beds, give us fresh towels, change our mugs and glasses, they changed the bins too. Staff were very friendly, always attentive to us. We were bed and breakfast, so we only got the breakfast which was a wide range of different foods. Although i didnt think the hot drinks were very nice. There was a games rooms which i thought could be bigger. There was a great jucazzi with warm water, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The indoor pool was great too. The outdoor pools were salt water which i did find a bit offputting but got used to it. There was also a ladder that was on the side off a small cliff, where you could swim in the sea surrounded by the rocks. We only went in there for a bit as there were loads of crabs on the rocks that looked like they wanted to bite us. All in all, its a great hotel and i would stay here again. Thankyou for having us, Pestana Carlton!

Booked this hotel long way before our trip to Funchal, back home without beeing here. We booked a big suite two rooms with seaview, great! The furnitures could be modernized! The view magnificent! Breakfast Lovely also with seaview. But the best was a direct connection with elevator to the sea plus a pool with seawater! Coming back to Funchal if so, we will stay here and then Perhaps it is a little bit modernized! One thing, beware of the Pub we ate there the evening when we arrived, our son took fish and chips, dont! It was direct from the microwave and soft with no taste...this was minus we didnt go there again. Garden pool restaurant was much better?

Madeira is a superb island.Lovely people, no yobs or graffiti. Pestana Carlton is a brilliant hotel complex 5 star. Visit arranged through Thompson TUI an excellent Company. Thompson staff very friendly and competent. Thompson planes clean and staffed efficiently.
