This hotel has a 4 star rating which is probably to do with the fact that it has sun deck & outdoor pool, indoor pool & jacuzzi and offers massages. It does look over the sea, is decorated in a clean, modern fashion and our room was large with a balcony and sea view. However, the beds had been positioned to obscure the electrical sockets and the switches for the lights. Our TV was not working on arrival but was fixed fairly quickly. You have to pay to use the room safe. There was a good range of food at breakfast but my fried egg was not properly cooked and the rest of the hot food was actually luke-warm. The hotel is on the edge of town which is a 30 min walk or 15 min drive away. The wifi provision is dreadful. It is only available in the foyer (our room was on the 6th floor) and I could not get my laptop to connect to it despite numerous attempts. My phone was only connected for a brief time. Staff were unhelpful and most people had to enter the password provided 10-12 times before connecting. Not good enough
My friend and I stayed for a few nights while exploring the southern part of the island. We had a lovely room with a balcony and ocean view. Our room seemed to be renovated. It was very nice with a small kitchen. Also there is parking. It is a very quiet town. I didn't see any cars on the road after dark.
Paul do Mar aparthotel is a really old hotel. There have been renovations especially in the public spaces, but the age is visible especially in the rooms. Furniture and appliances are desperately in need of replacement. Also, the sound-proofing is lousy. But despite the aging property, there are many good things at Aparthotel Paul do Mar. The sea view is superb, especially when the view is on the sunset side.The view from sun deck is fantastic. The pool area is quite nice. Indoor pool water is heated during winter months. Aparthotel Paul do Mar is a good base camp for trips to levadas and other outdoor activities. A car is necessary, almost all of the services can be found in the village of Calhetta, 15 minutes drive away. Wifi works only in the lobby, which is quite strange.
I booked this hotel through booking.com, which advised me it had a free cancellation policy. In the end I had decided to stay in a different hotel and cancelled the booking. I was advised by booking.com that the booking had been cancelled for free. Imagine my horror when I discovered the aparthotel had charged me over a hundred pounds! I spent two weeks telephoning and emailing trying to get this money refunded. In the end I did get my money back but never even received an apology from the apartment. I would be very careful making bookings with this hotel if you value your money and your time.
I'm sorry to say this but I haven't slept in a more uncomfortable bed ever. The hotel is lacking any sort of atmosphere. I didn't see a single picture on any wall. The reception is uninviting. On check-out we were just shown on our room bill how much we needed to pay, the Receptionist said absolutely nothing other than Goodbye to us. The lounge area where you need to be to access the Wifi (if this is important to you) is also uninviting. We also didn't enjoy the breakfast. The view from the room was good. The pool with surrounding area was also nice.
We stayed for 4 nights on our 2 week holiday. Situated below a cliff it is quite austere. Building work inside blocked off the lounge and there was scaffolding. We were not disturbed by any of this and had room near top on 5th floor. Rooms large and basic furniture. Huge balcony you could lie and sunbathe on. Great sea views and noise of surf. 2 single beds make the double. Big wardrobe. Bathroom fine though shower pressure dodgy. Kitchen basic. 2 of everything. No kettle. Take a sharp knife. Quality pans but one fits on hot plates at a time. 2 hot plates very efficient. Breakfast great. Lots of fruit, hot choices, breads and delicious cake. Indoor pool heated 28 degrees. Jacuzzi for 4/6 brill but to make it work stomp your feet around the edge! We did not use the restaurant. 2 trendy bars looked inviting below the hotel. Otherwise 1km walk along seafront to old town many local bars, snack bars, little restaurants and 1 small shop. We shopped in Rib Brava at a Continental or Pingo Doce. Lovely Base for walks up cliffs to Prazares, Ponta do Pargo, Rabacal and to visit Jardim do Mar. We loved it here. Quiet. Will return.
Booked in person at the desk and checked in, when arrived went straight to the room and for my surprise there was someone in the shower, i was shocked, looked around and a family was already in there based on clothes and huge mess around and also a cot which looked like someone had slept in it, made my way to reception explained and the man ( somewhat late 40's) asks if I'm sure?? Yes I'm sure !!! Gives me another room we both make our way to the room and guess what was dirty, previous guest checked out but room wasn't cleaned and made ready for the next ones, he apologised and explains he just started his shift and there was a girl before him but she lived down the road so he would call her ... long story short ... I left and he gave me a refund and there were no more rooms available.. this is march and online shows plenty of availability... poor management and definitely poor guest dealing skills... Avoid!
This hotel is quiet, at the end of the road and village. Nicely situated with clean and spacious rooms facing the sea. Small pool area, but too cold to swim in at this time of year. The indoor pool is heated. The jacuzzi is small and not very hot. I did not try any of the other "spa" services. Very good breakfasts, however, the buffet dinner was very uninspiring, even depressing, and after two nights I chose to eat outside of the hotel. The last two nights there the buffet seemed to improve slightly but overall dinner here was a huge disappointment. The old town part of the village is a good 15 minute walk, but all along the water front, and there are a few restaurants to choose from. along the way Also two bars just around the corner from the hotel. Highly recommended for fun atmosphere and great sunset viewing. No wifi except in the bar area so it is funny to see everyone congregated in that area on their personal devices. Not having wifi in rooms is great if you want to disconnect a bit while on holiday. The hotel is pretty isolated so you'll be a bit trapped with not much to do if you don't have a car, as there is not even one boutique selling any souvenirs, but which is also a good thing because it keeps the village authentic! Hiking in the area is wonderful.
The rooms were nice and cleaned every day The staff are great (we had them all up dancing on new years eve party ) which was a great night with a live band as much wine as you could drink with your meals and a huge firework display afterward and dancing and fun until the early hours . Breakfast is available from 7.30am until 10.30am (good selection ) You can also buy snacks sandwiches and Pizza through the day if you wish . We had booked a few buffet style evening meals in the evening as long as you book before 7pm you are OK we found these meals to be of good quality with soup,salads and 2 main courses and a table full of fruit and sweets, you can order drinks with you meal ,House red wine is good The evening buffet was 16 euro each with a bottle of red wine costing anything from 10 euro upwards which we thought was good value for money . If you wish to have a quiet holiday then this is the place for you . The typical hotel user here is one that likes walking hiking etc of which we are not , but it did not stop us having a good time . Along the main road just at the bottom of the hotel there are a couple of bars they are nothing special but nice to try for a change further down the road there are also a couple of restaurants (be warned they are a 15 to 20 min walk ) then to the main town 25 min walk or so there is a small shop which sells essentials with another couple of small eateries . The nearest main town with good sized store is in Calheta but is either an early morning bus ride (7am) or taxi at 20 euro each way. You can get a bus to Funchal which is approx 22 to 30 euro or you can get a cab which is about 60 euro each way and would take 1.5 hours by bus and approx 1 hour and 10 mins by car . If staying at Paul do Mar then I would definitely suggest you hire a car at the airport if you are planning to explore the island as the hotel is in an area which is very quiet . I can only thank the staff for being so nice here you a credit to your company and nothing was to much effort for you all especially the 2 South African ladies who made us laugh time after time ,the reception staff are great as well always smiling and again would do anything for you .
Well, what can I say........ Stayed there in April 2016 and it was very nice, that's the reason why we returned there. But this time very disappointing, the Hotel in just about 8 months, got very badly maintained, interior pool and jacuzzi not advisable, it had a lot of product (chlorine) and you could smell it at a distance. Went to the room so we could get a bath and go to dinner and......No water, took about 4 hours to solve this problem, in the mean time, we missed the reservation at the restaurant (not the hotel one), asked for some help, because we where starving, and they offered Dinner at the Hotel, Bad Idea.... food was not fresh, and red wine was wasted. We went to the room again asked for a bottle of water so we could cook something to eat. I really hope that they can return to the standard they had, because I really enjoy the place, until that happen, we are not coming back.
