After a trek along the coast, you arrive where you think it will be a great super place in the countryside. Not really but not bad, Hotel O Colmo is just an old hotel in a lost place of Madeira, you dream of pool and jacuzzi, they have, but it is cold and lost, you think about taning in the green, no way. But the room is good, the staff is friendly and the diner at the restaurant was of high quality. So take what you find, and be happy with that, it is not expensive, even if not deserved the 4 stars they pretend to have. Enjoy !
I stayed here for a couple of nights in December as part of a group walking tour. I found the hotel staff extremely helpful especially the receptionist who had not long returned from South Africa. The room was comfortable and of good size (for a single traveller). I got a good night's sleep and the shower was hot and plentiful. We had dinner and breafast there for two days and the standard was good with quite a wide range of choice for breakfast.
Hotel was only ok as it lacked atmosphere and the staff did not really try to please. It needs a thorough make over. The pool area did not have a pleasant odour and I did not like the many ants both on the side of the pool at the far end and also in the water. They were coming from a planted area that could easily be totally removed. The food was good both in the evening and breakfast but I think we will give this hotel a miss next trip. We were glad that we had only booked a one night stay.
I had the pleasure to visit Madeira for the first time in October 2017. The fourth stop of my round trip was at the Hotel O Colmo in Santana. My room was absolutely fine, quiet and clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I had during my trip, with a very good choice and quality of food, including an amazing green cake I still need to know the recipe for. Overall, I was absolutely satisfied with my stay at the Hotel O Colmo and would/will certainly choose it again for my next trip.
I spent two nights here whilst on a tour of the island. Santana is a small village in the north of the island, famous for its triangular thatched houses but otherwise without much going on - however, it's a great base for walking. The hotel seemed to have few overnight guests but is packed at lunchtime with coach tour parties. The overall impression was very eccentric - my room was clean but basic, there was a wall in the middle which blocked the window (!) but it was quiet and I slept well. There is a large swimming pool heated to bath-like temperatures, which was great and unexpected, but the room it was in had seen better days. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was variable - one night I had the best meal I'd enjoyed on the trip, the other night the food was inedible. Breakfast was very good, fresh bread and delicious local honey. Overall this is a strange place that has obviously seen better days. If you want somewhere to sleep for a night or two, and are out all day and can avoid the tour bus visits, it's perfectly fine, but don't base yourself there for a week.
We had the unfortunate experience in this hotel of discovering quite a lot of bedbugs in our hotelroom. Which on itself can happen to any hotel, whether it's a 4 or 1-star hotel. What bothered us most though, and what matters, is that they didn't help us at all once we found out about the problem in the room. It was late in the evening once we found out and we went down to the reception to show them the picture of the bedbugs in our room. The guy at the reception reacted with a face that it wasn't a surprise for him that bedbugs were detected in the room. We asked for another room as we obviously didn't want to sleep in a room with bedbugs. We received the answer that they were fully booked so we could not get another room. And that was it, they didn't went upstairs with us to check the room, and they didn't offer us any help. We therefore took control of the situation ourselves and ran off as quickly as we could and checked out. We forgot a cable in the room and found out next day so we just went back there the next day to get the cable. We were allowed to pick up the cable out of the room ourselves and it looked like they just renewed the sheets and cleaned everything up for the next guest. Instead of taking the bedbugs problem seriously and exterminating the bugs..... So all in all: very bad impression of this hotel and no way worth 4-stars considering how they dealt with the problem / or assisting us, and taking bedbugs as a serious problem for future guests (aside from the anyways outdated interior).
We visited in summer '14 The hotel meets demand, but isn't a real **** hotel. It does have a (indoor) pool and jacuzzi, but is so much outdated that you won't give it a **** rating. Rooms are clean nevertheless. Smell somewhat musty however. Pillows good (are somewhat higher) and matrass OK (though, somewhat small). Breakfast also fine. The hotel and the entire village of Santana (including the 'theme parc') seem gone glory. It is an excellent start however, for beautiful hikes. The price-quality proportion of the Colmo restaurant is fine. We enjoyed the food, esp. the regional meat on a skewer and maracuja pudding. There aren't many other restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
The quintessential tourgroup hotel. Once a luxury 4 star hideaway, now a deteriorated noisy and busy place with worn out rooms and intetiors. The best of the hotel: nice location; great views, very decent breakfast, large rooms. The worst: incredibly noisy: neighbour's bathroom, doors , footsteps. Noise increased by wooden floors and doors. Sleeping without earplugs is impossible. Staff is not interested in individual travellers and doesn't even listen to requests. Hotel not recommended for travellers.
Stayed here for one night as part of an Explore walking group. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. There was a balcony and a good view. Local delicacies were served in the restaurant - I had black scabbard fish (in batter) with baked banana and passion fruit sauce. Everything was perfectly fine.
Room 104 a large room. A twin room with a large balcony. There is an en suite with a shower over the bath. There is no safe in the room and no tea/coffee facilities. There is a lift to the floors. There is a gym/ swimming pool and Jacuzzi but very cold in January. Ask the guy at the desk to switch heating on in Jacuzzi after a long days walking. There s a really good pool table. The food in the restaurant was really good. Black Scabbard fish, cheese croquettes and duck rice, There was a total of 6 guests at the hotel as this was the 18th Jan. Sandra our waitress was superb. A stroll down the road and a little bar were you can get 2 large glasses of Portuguese wine for 4.50 Euros.
