An excellent hotel for its official official rating. The room was very adequate and well serviced. The breakfast was perfectly fine. The staff were excellent. On our next visit we will return to the Windsor.
We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights, and could tell from the initial cold receptionist who just handed us our keys that it was not going to go well. The room itself was very dark due to a huge dark wood wardrobe across the front and only 2 small windows either side to get light, and fresh air from. There is no air conditioning, just a fan in the room. We were room 207 on the second floor (of 5). The bed takes up most of the room which is a good size, but as a result you have to squeeze round one side of the bed to get in past the wardrobe. The safe, which the hotel says it has had the key missing, so instead we were offered a small envelope to put in the hotel safe....not much use for an iPad and camera. On to the bathroom and the toilet seat is broken so uneven an wobbly, and the water out of the taps is a brown/yellow colour. When you take a shower in the bath the drain is partially blocked to basically the bath fills up - on average mid shin height by the end of the shower. The towels themselves are threadbare. So not a pleasant experience. The free wifi is terrible, and I hooked onto other wifi networks in order just to download my mails. So on to breakfast, it is basic, one type of cheese, and 2 meats, some rolls, jam, coffee, tea, dried up swiss roll, and tinned fruits. Very basic. It does also have a swimming pool, really just a plunge pool, it is about 3 sun chairs in length, so you can kick off one end and float to the other with out the need to swim. However there is a lovely view from the pool which is on the roof of the hotel. If you require parking, which is limited in Funchal, the hotel does have a car park - but only have a small car as manoeuvring around Funchal's narrow streets will be tricky in a big car. The only positive I could say about the hotel is that it is well located about 5-10 mins to the main shopping area and 15 mins to the seafront, all walkable. However do take good shoes as the streets are cobbled and very uneven. Overall, I loved Madeira, but would not go back to the Windsor - AVOID
The rooms are small, the beds are too low and they have those horrible woolen blankets that make your skin itch. Rooms made up at 4pm each day just when your back from the town or beach and getting ready to go out. Water from bath tap came out a light rustic brown so has to be run for a few minutes before use. I was wondering why there were no photos of the breakfast on their FB page and now I know why AWFUL. Chocolate swiss roll, rubbery over cooked bacon all the fruit jouces are cheap nasty and way too sweet. I eded up going else where for bfast as it was joyousless experience. I couldnt wait to leave the staff Some were helpful) but usually had a no to requests. Also if your room looks out over the internal courtyard you getting car arriving and leaving at 545am onwards in the morning. Also people smoke and drifts up into your bedroom window. Be prepared to have a fan on all night as no AC and their fan choices are LOUD luckily I had earplugs. the fridge is small and just keeps stuff cool barely. The only good thing to say is that the light switches are conviently placed but really is about it - NEVER AGAIN AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
I am so pleased that we chose this hotel for our recent holiday. Our room was very comfortable and the air con was a blessing. There was a small fridge in the room which had a small charge for the stay. The hotel is only a few yards from a large supermarket which was great for buying bottled water and snacks, on every corner nearby fruit sellers offer a fantastic amount of fresh fruit, strawberries, cherries, peaches, plums at amazingly low prices (great kept in the fridge). The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was more than adequate, I actually liked the bacon which was streaky bacon with a smokey edge to it. I don't know what people expect for breakfasts or what amazing things they have at home but I enjoyed it. I don't expect porridge or smoked salmon or kedgerie in a busy little hotel which offers such great value. My husband was unwell for the first few days but thankfully the TV in our room had a few English speaking channels which helped pass the time for him. We took a local bus to Ribiera Brava when he felt better and had an amazing drive through fantastic scenery for €3.40 per person each way. The journey out took nearly two hours and we took the express bus back which uses the motorway and takes half the time (still amazing views but without the hairpin bends). If only our buses were as cheap to travel on and came on time like theirs. We also took a local bus to Santa Cruz where my husband had an amazing fish soup. There is an amazing promenade walk available there and a small water park if you bring children. We spoke to local people as much as we could they would love more families to visit the island instead of just 'golden oldies'. It is a very beautiful, safe island to visit, I can't recommend the island and the Windsor Hotel enough!
It was just over a year ago when we last visited the hotel Windsor in Funchal, there has been a major change, the rooms now have air conditioning (hooray). The Windsor is a fantastic place to be for the location, the firework displays on the weekend throughout June. We found the swimming pool on the roof the ideal spot to chill out and have a beer or two and catch some rays or zzzzzzz's. The lunchtime menu at the hotel is very cheap, so to the evening menu. Your about 100mtrs from the main shopping and cafe area's and the ice cream parlour is still 60 metres away and open till 23.00hrs. Staff are still very friendly and very helpful. We decided on a bus trip around half of the Island this time and it was amazing although your backside is a bit numb after 3 hours to porta Moniz, then 2 hours there having a fantastic fish soup and then 3 hours back stopping at Calheta, it was lovely and a bit scary going up and down the mountains, but what views. Well worth the 12 euros each. For the money you really cannot knock the Windsor, its basic but good.
Stayed for a week in June, staff always friendly and helpful, perfectly placed in the old town within walking distance of everything you need to explore.small pool on the roof and plenty of sun beds if your looking for a suntan.
Ideal location, situated within easy reach of shops, restaurants and attractions. A dated hotel, but very clean. Fresh towels daily although the towels have seen better days. Staff very friendly and happy to help. Pool quite small but ok for a cooling off dip. Breackfast not that good although a lot available choice not that good stay away from the so called bacon. Rooms on the small side and could do with tea/ coffe making facilites. Enjoyed our stay.
The hotel is very central (you are 5 minutes walking from all the shops, restaurants, monuments) the staff is very nice and polite, the room was clean. Nevertheless it is not a 4 star hotel. We noticed that they up dated the rooms but not in the best way. The decoration is poor and old fashion.
A nice hotel with normal conditions for a stay in town for a few days, very good location in the center of the city. The rooms are good, quite big and clean, the personal is very sympathetic. We dind't had the opportunity to have dinner in the hotel's restaurants, although it was fully booked everyday.Breakfast is quite simple and has a lack of variety.
We stayed here for three days and had a great time. Great location to walk from, to restaurants and attractions, even parking place, wifi, rooftop swimming pool (though a bit crowded sometimes). Breakfast was sufficient but not great. Good choice for daily tours around.
