Our second visit to the Porto Santa Maria and as before it was excellent.Such a good position on the sea front in the old town where there is so much character. We stayed B&B and the choice of restaurants around is good, the evening meal in the hotel is equally good, The staff are so helpful. Certainly will come again. Philip & Mary A.
We first visited this hotel in 2010 and were so delighted with our choice that we have searched for a similar type of hotel for all our holidays since then. From this first experience of the Porto Santa Maria we created a general formula for choosing a holiday hotel - We like a hotel that is within a short walk, should I say stroll, of the local town or village where we will find plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. - The location of the Porto Santa Maria is just the ticket being within the old town which is full of restaurants and bars. The hotel is very close to the cable car going to Monte and the Botanical Gardens and the centre of Funchal is within a ten minute walk. I should mention that the surrounding pavements and streets are cobbled - not an easy walk in high heels. We prefer that the hotel should have a pool as we are not 'beach people'. - The Porto Santa Maria has both indoor and outdoor pools - the large indoor one is a favourite with us for a swim before dinner. As mentioned by other reviewers there are plenty of sun beds outside and beach towels are provided. I should also congratulate the gardeners for doing such a lovely job of keeping the gardens around the pool. We also look for a hotel that offers rooms with a balcony and good sea view. - Most of the rooms at the Porto Santa Maria face the sea, either directly or side view. This time we have a junior suite with a balcony off the bedroom and another one off the sitting room, both looking out on the harbour. We particularly like the very comfortable beds and the updated decor. There has been noticeable redecoration and upgrading since our last visit two years ago, including wifi in all the rooms. Lastly we look for a bed and breakfast deal. - It was lovely to be greeted by Lena, the guest relations manager, on arrival for our first breakfast, this visit. She has a good memory for faces! The breakfast offers a wide choice of fare and certainly fulfilled all our needs. When searching for a hotel in any other holiday destination since our first visit to the Porto Santa Maria we try to find something with similar attributes - particularly the location!
The hotel is nice enough. In the best location. But their too busy trying to maintain a so called 4 star. They miss out on what's important. The guest. While we we're there . There was some renovations going on. Noisy dusty and anoying. Yes they have to be done sometime! !!!!. Food is surprisingly limited in choice. Would I still recommend it . Yes for location. And reviews like this. So you know what you're getting
Our second stay at the Porto Santa Maria and again a lovely holiday. A sea view room with a little kitchenette, we were on B&B basis and there were lots of very good restaurants and coffee shops nearby. The breakfasts are excellent ,Lena and her colleagues ensure a smooth welcoming service.
Recently stayed here for a week, the check in was swift and efficient. The room had a good sea view, was clean and as a bonus had a small kitchenette. We stayed on a b&b basis so can only comment on the breakfast, there was a good choice of food both hot and cold but the best bit was the friendly welcome from the woman in charge who saw you to your table including a hug and a kiss for her regulars! In the pool area there always seem to be sun beds available no matter what time of day you looked. Also there was a free hotel bus available which would take you to the sister hotels in the resort, this meant you could explore other parts of Funchal without having to walk up 'cardiac hill', just check with reception for details. But the best bit about the hotel is it's location on the sea front in the old town, just step out the front door and you are in a maze of narrow streets with all the restaurants and bars, you could just walk a few hundred yards and have a different meal every night. Yes I would definitely recommend this hotel.
This is my second stay, though my husbands first. We had a second floor room with a sea view. As with my previous stay 18 months ago hotel, rooms and grounds were spotless and All staff were welcoming and friendly. We also got to know some lovely people also staying at the hotel (during the popular Happy Hour!), many of which were return visitors with one couple receiving their Gold card! Hotel ideally located for the many restaurants in the old town. Highly recommend a visit!
Recently stayed at the Porto Santa Maria for a week. It is situated alongside the ocean and next to Old Town just a short walk to several restaurants, Le Jardin and Risottoria del Mundo, recommended. The hotel is decorated with a modern flair, as you enter the lobby there's a fabulous view of the ocean just beyond the reception area. Atmosphere is warm and inviting; the hotel is spotless throughout! The bedroom was flawlessly perfect with great views of the ocean; a small kitchen enables you to have coffee on your private balcony upon awaking. And the bed is unbelievably comfortable, Since the hotel is adults only, there is a serenely peaceful atmosphere at breakfast served on the terrace, around manicured garden and pool area, and throughout the hotel. Our only complaint was on the morning we checked out, there was A receptionist we hadn't seen before who was rude and arrogant, which surprised us as the staff had been so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. But we still feel it is definitely worth returning to the Porto Santa Maria, for another visit!
Just returned from another visit to this hotel. Last visited 2 years ago. Had a junior suite this time which was superb. 2 balconies. 1 attached to the lounge and 1 attached to the bedroom. The rooms could be separated completely by a sliding door. 2 doors on the bathroom; again 1 from the bedroom and 1 from the lounge and a wash basin each in the bathroom. A television in each room as well and a dvd player. We always have bed & breakfast at this hotel as there are lots of restaurants just outside that all serve good food although some are preferable to others of course. The kitchenette is useful with a fridge and crockery & cutlery. We received a bottle of water every day and a bowl of fruit on arrival. Be careful not to use the bigger bottle of water that's in the fridge as it is charged for. The only let down with the rooms are the towels. They all need replacing. White towels that have gone grey with age and are very thin. Should be lovely white fluffy towels in a 4* hotel. The pool area is lovely but mattresses on the loungers would be a good idea and more chairs. My husband uses a chair but there were only about 5 so I had to go and reserve one each morning between 8 and 9 o'clock as people use them to put their clothes and bags on. The pools are lovely both indoor and outdoor. Plenty big enough as there was only ever us in. Not a lot of swimmers obviously. The outside area is very clean but does the gardener need to rope off half the beds to cut the grass. He took nearly all day to strim a couple of patches of grass. If he started earlier and worked through he could have them done before the guests were out. The breakfast is good with plenty of hot and cold choices and the Captains bar happy hour and a half is excellent. Victor and Carlos are excellent barmen. Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend this hotel.
The staff here continue to achieve a very high standard and we always feel welcome every time we return to the hotel. Over the years small tweaks have added to the good experience, Wi-Fi in the rooms, the promenade seating area, redecoration of the rooms, continuous improvement of the breakfast choices and more. We always travel here on a B&B basis to take advantage of the wonderful choice of restaurants around the area but we did choose to eat at the Bar-B-Q which was excellent and very enjoyable. Lena is wonderful and I don't think I have encountered anyone with some much enthusiasm and passion for what she does. Always helpful and always on hand at breakfast to assist anyone. But the other staff are very good as well, from the front desk to the bars, everyone enthusiastic to help. If you can, choose a sea view room, it is worth it and the top floor decking area with Jacuzzi is a lovely, quiet place to relax. If you are wanting to stay in Funchal there are not many better locations than this!
For many tears we have visited Madeira annually and very much enjoyed our visits However with my Wife in a wheelchair the Hotel is disabled friendly but very difficult to leave with the wheelchair. Accordingly I went alone to try the Santa Maria as it is ideal for getting around Funchal. I was very impressed with the facilities, particularly for the disabled. The Staff are typical of Porto Bay in that they are very friendly and obliging. Would certainly suggest getting a sea view room. If we are able to return to Madeira it will be to this Hotel.
