Another excellent holiday at the Porto Santa Maria Hotel. This was our 6th visit and won’t be our last, as we are coming again in October for two weeks. All the hotel staff were as always very friendly and obliging. Nice to see Lena again as we didn’t see her last year. We enjoyed the Wine Tasting Session with Sergio, he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We also saw him in the restaurant of an evening and were able to talk to him about what wines to choose for our meals, hopefully we will see him in October. Looking forward to our next visit.
We come every year to Madeira and where else would one stay than the beautiful Porto Santa Maria Hotel, they have never let us down. The management and staff make it their mission to accommodate our every whim. This lovely place is spotless and beautiful. We love it so much that we brought our daughter last year...she absolutely loved it and will be back with her partner ( hopefully with us too 😊). This year we brought our friends along....they are hooked and will also be returning. This lovely hotel sits right in the old quarter of Funchal with all the wonderful restaurants just two steps ( literally) from the gate. The cable car up to the exotic gardens and famous toboggans is just three minutes walk. Everything is a hand. Evening entertainment is second to none at Porto Santa Maria and then, of course, there is the ‘ Happy one-and-a-half hour every evening in the delightful Captains Bar. We are already planning our next stay....can’t wait. X We can not recommend the amazing Hotel enough. Adrian and Lesley Sluyters ...Kent UK
I was ready to give a 5 star review for our stay up until the end when we checked out. Disappointingly on checkout Carlos Costa who dealt with us was extremely rude and discourteous in the way he dealt with my mother and I. He began to present our bill, never asking if we had enjoyed our stay, and then carried on to try to deal with another customer whilst ignoring us. When I asked him to focus on us first his response was to simply “calm down you are on holiday and chill out. When I told him we had a taxi waiting and he was causing us a problem he just said we weren’t his problem. We were truly disgusted by his attitude and he was a disgrace to the hotel and demonstrated an appalling attitude in front on the trainee with him. This wasn’t our first problem with reception who ignored my mother when trying to book a spa treatment until such time another member of staff told the receptionist to help. On the plus side, we had a good stay at the hotel, very clean everywhere, excellent buffet breakfast (apart from tepid water for coffee in plastic jugs). Avoid a first floor room if you want quiet especially if it is above the main bar as it is noisy. Also, if you are not a returning guest take your own tea bags as despite all rooms having tea and coffee making facilities there are no tea bags or coffee provided. Will we stay again, probably not now based on the treatment on departure which is a shame.
This was our first time to Madeira and we could not have found a more perfect location. The walk along the adjacent promenade is flat, easy & scenic. The hotel lies between the Old Town and the sea, so very convenient for all the restaurants in Old Town but only a very short walk to the more "modern" parts of the town. We had a room with a small kitchenette, which meant that we could have the odd snack in the room. Breakfast in the hotel was particularly good, with an excellent choice of fruit, breads, cold meat & cheese. We don't tend to eat a hot breakfast and certainly never from a buffet, but all the other guests seemed to be enjoying the hot buffet. The main hotel restaurant did not appeal, because the meal was usually a buffet and we would rather go out in the evening.
This is a lovely hotel in a great location by the old city ,the cable car a stroll away and in close proximity to a variety of restaurants. the pool and garden area a little oasis to sit and relax. the Junior suite we had was good with plenty of space but a pity there wasn't a walk in shower , the bathroom was big enough to have had one. The other downside of 128 was the view we overlooked the car park, a thoroughfare and outside tables at restaurant opposite with a partial view of the sea and no late afternoon sun so not tempted to sit on the large balcony. the staff at breakfast and at lunchtime in the garden very friendly not so at the reception. we did not eat dinner at the hotel as so happy with restaurants outside. the promenade very flat for easy walking to the marina. We would highly recommend the hotel.
This was our 6th visit to Madeira and our 2nd stay at the Porto Santa Maria, what can we say - it is a lovely hotel in a great location with very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The buffet style meals are tasty - always something to get your taste buds going. If it is a relaxing stay that you are looking for then this is the hotel for you.
The hotel has an excellent location in the old part of Funchal, close to the cable car, shopping area and with many restaurants near by. The hotel is for people over 50-60, there were hardly anyone younger when we stayed there. The staff was in most cases excellent, especially the lady responsible for the breakfast, she was extremely helpful and service minded. Our room had sea view, although it was somewhat limited. The room was good including the bath. Breakfast was very good with a reasonably large selection. We also liked the bar with live entertainment in the evening, a nice place to relax before going to bed. The pool area was good for relaxing in the sun and with direct access to the promenade. We travelled together with a couple of friends, and we all agreed that we will return to Porto Santa Maria next time we are going to Madeira.
Having stayed here several times, it is like being at home. I always feel very relaxed. It is obvious that many guests return each year. You can be assured of a good welcome by everyone. You can guarantee your room will be of high quality and spotlessly clean, but the location does make a big difference. I have had several different rooms but this visit for room location was the best yet. My room (260) was on the end of the hotel overlooking the promenade and adjacent park, with an unobstructed view of the harbour and all the maritime activity. A slight lean forward and I got an excellent view of Funchal city. I also had six palm trees immediately outside my balcony . It was a dream 2 weeks. Before you ask for this room be aware it is a junior suite and costs a little more than the usual sea view with balcony. This room also has an enclosed balcony to give you complete privacy (others also have this, but not all) The grounds of the hotel are well maintained. In addition to the usual tables around the pool, there is an additional raised dining area directly on the promenade, which gives you a good people watching location. It is also well located for the cable car to Monte and one of the major bus terminuses. The hotel operates a courtesy bus to other Porto Bay hotels, plus a city centre stop by the Port. Good way to get to the lido area. You must reserve your return journey and specify time. This a must even at this time of year as the bus gets full for the return journey. Pounding the cobbled streets plus the humidity took its toil on my legs and feet so I treated myself to a Relaxing Legs Massage in the hotel spa. The hours treatment (69 Euros) gave immediate improvement so I highly recommend it. It was obvious that the majority of guests dined out at night in one of the many restaurants in the area. But when you consider the extensive range of food available at the hotels Arsenal Restaurant buffet for 28.50 Euros I believe the hotel is good value. Thursday evening is the Gourmet Flavours night which gives you a choice from two starters, then soup followed by a sorbet. You can choose from two main courses followed by a dessert A pianist plays throughout the evening. Sunday night is Madeira Folklore evening in the restaurant. You are entertained for half an hour by a local group of Folklore singers doing what I call a Madeiran dance routine and the diners are invited to take part. I prefer to watch and listen than take part. Many others took that view. Made full use of the Rituals Body Lotion provided in the bathroom. Sweet orange and cedar wood scented. Cannot wait to return later in the year.
This hotel had good amenities, it was very clean and the location was excellent. The food was of a good standard and the restaurant staff were very helpful and friendly. The cleaning staff were also so friendly and efficient,
The island of Madeira is a beautiful place and Funchal is a beautiful town combining old and new, my preference is for old. The Porto Santa Maria is a modern hotel set in the old town right on the promenade, perfect. The hotel is bright, spacious and clean and the staff could not be friendlier or more helpful if encouraged with a cattle prod! The food is excellent and the split level dining room has a conservatory leading on to the terrace, a lovely spot for breakfast. the service is excellent. Our room, a junior suite, was spacious and tastefully decorated with a huge comfortable bed and a large balcony with a view out to sea and the harbour, perfect for watching the cruise ships entering and leaving. The bathroom was huge and pristine and kept that way all week by the excellent cleaning staff. I hope I have not painted too rosy a picture of this hotel and its staff as I would hate it to be fully booked when I wish to return and I will, the sooner the better.
