This was my second stay at this hotel and my husband’s fourth. I am very pleased to say that once again it didn’t disappoint. We paid an extra premium for our room and it was well worth it; with a lovely sea and garden view and a fabulous shower and Super King Sized bed it was well worth the money. As always the staff were wonderful, very helpful but not hovering around intrusively. There was a great choice at breakfast, healthy options and some not so healthy so you could really mix and match. And it wasn’t limited to cold choices. I recommend the omelettes. The Italian restaurant serves up some lovely food. Unfortunately we weren’t able to get to the Atlantico restaurant but we ate there one Christmas day and can fully recommend it; with a great view of the sea. The pool and the area around it was large and we found that we could always get a sunbed. We used the gym a few times and were impressed; much better than most of the hotel gyms we’ve been in before. A new part of the hotel was being constructed while we were there, the building work was delayed due to bad weather in February but the work didn’t spoil our holiday and I’m sure the result will be another lovely part of this fine hotel. And just to make our stay perfect we were lazing on our sunbed looking out to sea on our last day and suddenly we saw a pod of dolphins. My first ever. We will definitely be back.
Travelling solo, I chose this hotel as it promotes itself as an "active" hotel. It is also used by some UK tour operators as a destination for active holidays which is what I was seeking. The hotel has it's own "daily program" of (amongst other things) levada walks and yoga for the price of one euro. I would highly recommend the levada walk/run as a fabulous way to start the day but it's necessary to be fairly proactive (particularly if you do not speak Portugese or German - it is mainly German guests in the hotel). One day I had booked to go on the levada walk and was the only person to do so. However, despite being sat in reception about ten minutes before the shuttle bus was due to depart, I was left behind. The person leading the tour (who I thing was the hotel guest services manager) left with one other peron who was waiting without actually checking if the person who had actually booked was present. The hotel runs several fitness classes (body pump, spin etc) a day which is one of the main reasons I chose it. I failed to realise however (due to the emphasis on it being an "active" holiday hotel) that the classes would be in Portugese. The gym attached to the hotel is essentially a gym for the local area which hotel guests can use rather than the other way around. Most of the instructors did give the occasional instruction in English and I'm fairly confident so didn't mind that I was surrounded by people I couldn't understand but shrinking violets may struggle. In addition (my fault completely for not checking) - during my week long visit there was a fitness festival in Madeira and for three days there were no classes at the gym as the instructors were all involved. The festival was too far for me to travel to independently but one of the staff at the gym said if I really wanted to they could possibly arrange transport to and from the festival for me. I chose not to and instead went on two walking tours and a mountain biking tour with Lokoloko which I would highly recommend. Despite what advice you may be given at check in, if you wish to take part in the fitness classes, go and book yourself into the classes at the gym. Room - there is a section of the hotel across the road from the main hotel. I was initially given a room across the road from the main hotel. I got the impression from the hotel's website that when I visited (April 2018) that most of the construction work would have been completed. This was not the case. I opened my balcony door and there was a large crane and several workers what felt like ten metres away in what was a full scale building site. It was incredibly obtrusive and very noisy. I asked to be moved rooms to the main hotel and I was without any fuss or drama and my new room was spacious, clean and adequately furnished with a wonderful sea view. The staff in the hotel were generally delightful - professional, helpful, enthusiastic and cheerful. I was half board. It's possible to eat in the hotel's other two restaurants - gastro pub and pizzeria for a small supplement but I didn't feel the need. I found the food in the buffet (half board) to be fresh, tasty, interesting and diverse. There were dfferent options every evening. If I hadn't been travelling on my own I probably would not have chosen the HB option but for me it was the easiest choice. It's very easy to travel to Funchal by public bus from this hotel. There's a bus stop appx 20 metres from the hotel and buses run frequently. It's appx 4 euro return and takes appx half an hour. Travel elsewhere in Madeira would probably require a hire car. I would stay in this hotel again but I don't think I'd choose/recommend it as an active holiday option.
I had picked out this hotel on account of the indoor pool and was ready to make concessions on other scores. No need, everything was perfect! We very much enjoyed our peaceful seaview-cum-balcony room as well as the bountiful buffet breakfast and the friendly and professional staff. The neighborhood - my biggest fear - turned out to be quite nice too, providing a number of good restaurants at hand or a walk down to the seafront promenade for lunch facing the Atlantic. On two rainy evenings we had dinner at the hotel's gastropub and then its pizzeria, both perfectly in line with the quality of the establishment. Would we go back? Absolutely.
Had it not been for some of the staff I would have rated this hotel much higher. The room was nice, very large and with a lovely view of the sea. There are also a couple of nice pools and well equipped gym. For me the highlight would have been the yoga shala - which I was able to use a couple of time as a result of some yoga classes, including private classes. However this leads on to one of my issues with the staff. One morning when as I asked about the use of the shala to do some yoga I was told it was only open for set classes or hire. When I then enquired about hiring it I was told that I would have to wait until later in the day when the manager was back. The issue was though how all of this was conveyed to me - all in a very rude, abrupt and unpleasant way. I had a couple of other negative interactions with the staff of the hotel who clearly did not want to be there and were not particularly friendly. Fortunately there were others who were wonderful but for me the staff really make the place - and it was not great having to deal with unpleasant staff.
In this hotel hospitality is celebrated on highest level. The staff is friendly and caring, the rooms are big and clean with an atmosphere of luxury and the entire hotel complex is generous and comfortable. Also he food is absolutely appropriate to this class of hotel.
All staff very friendly and helpful, food excellent and outstanding rooms.Local transport cheap and often. At least six restaurants within a two minute walk.Health facilities ,spa pool gym squash courts.treatments all outstanding.
I was fortunate enough to stay for 6 weeks in this hotel and I enjoyed my time there very much.. Perfect food for me, huge variety of vegetables and salads in the evening, healthy options for breakfast too. Friendly, attentive dining room staff.. Relaxed hotel with lots of facilities. Long opening hours in the gym so I could find time to use this very well equipped facility.. Thank you every one at Hotel Galasol.
Stayed in 2016 so second visit, construction work going on, but as I work in construction, home from home. The noise came from the construction site at the top of the road who are breaking out the rock! the name gives it away. The hotel has no way of controlling this, the same way as when I returned to Manchester I was given the room 126 right next to the external chillers which even though it was minus 1 outside didn't switch off, although in this instance £150 would have sorted it. My stay was excellent, yes I had little people, a few ants, lizards when it was warm, and in between the rain, apparently you also get mozzies, if you don't want to meet them stay in the UK. I met with the general manager at a social event, a sound man, I met with a barman, a sound man, both committed to looking after their guests. You can't ask for more than that! God willing I will return in 2018
I have just returned from a stay at this hotel. First the positives....nice indoor and outdoor pool (only used indoor) Good gym facilities. Breakfast buffet has good selection. On arrival I was in an older style room, further away from reception. It was a big room and quiet. Well apart from the noise of toilet and shower from other rooms. The bed was comfortable though. Unfortunately I wasn't the only one to think so, as I had to fight some tiny ants for my bed! I explained to the reception staff, asking for the room to be treated with ant repellent and to have new bedding. I did get new bedding but I don't believe the bed was moved and the room treated. Why would I think this? Because the following morning the ants were waking me up, on the bed! Consequently I asked to change rooms. This was done, but I really was made to feel that they were doing me a huge favour. My new room was more up to date but unfortunately I could hear everything from the room next door. There was an adjoining door. Ear plugs came out. I ate at the restaurant in the evening twice. The food was fine, nothing special but the service left a lot to be desired. There is a big building project going on at the moment so you do hear this during the day. But unless you want to sit by the pool all week it wouldn't really bother you. Well it didn't bother me. Parking is lacking, but I did manage to find a space when needed. I wouldn't rate this hotel 4 star, it's a 3 at best in my opinion. Would I recommend? No, I'm sure there are much better options on Madeira.
We stayed for a week as the base for a group walking holiday. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, and buffet breakfasts and evening meals were excellent. All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. A few reviewers have mentioned noise from the adjacent construction site - this did not affect us as our room was at the opposite side of the hotel, but it could be an issue for those with rooms closer to the building work.
