Wonderful period hotel with amazing extensive gardens and also a golf course on the estate. Comfortable rooms and very quiet. Good food and attentive staff. Our bedroom was in an annexe a few yards from the main entrance and it was spacious with a generous en-suite.
Maybe not quite perfection..., but this small intimate hotel is unbeatable for location and ambience in Madiera. Set high above the city of Funchal with verdant well tended colourful botanical gardens on one side of the hotel and what must surely be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Europe on the other, the setting is superb. Excellent walks within the overall grounds with glorious glimpses of the city and the ocean far below. The staff are friendly and helpful, our rooms, although slightly dated, was exceptionally clean and well equipped, and there is a small but well presented pool and spa block only metres away. It was too cold to use the lovely looking outdoor pool and we hope that one day it will be heated for those visiting in the winter as the indoor pool, although relaxing, is too small for swimmers. Food was good too. Excellent and adequate choice for breakfast, small cafe in the gardens for lunch, and a splendid offering in a lovely dining room for dinner. Altogether a wonderful experience that we will repeat. This hotel is not cheap and perhaps the dining is overpriced, but the whole experience was magical.....sun is almost guaranteed but make sure that the temperature will suit what you want to do.
Just back from what turned out to be my twelfth visit to the glorious Casa Velha do Palheiro. I know I've said it before but I can't quite explain the feeling of relaxation that descends as I sweep down the drive to the hotel. The peace and quiet are a rare thing when so much of the island is busy with tourists, or near the many roads and tunnels. I know that there are great hotels down near the coast, but the period feel of Casa Velha and surrounding nature is what I love. Of course I visit Funchal and many other places but it's always good to return 'home' at the end of the day to a restful night's sleep and a delicious breakfast. This visit was far from quiet, with trips out most days, great fun with my Madeiran friends, and many new experiences. People ask why I don't get bored going back to Madeira time after time but the truth is that I don't. It is great to walk through the city and bump into people I know. It seems to happen more often to me there than it does in my home town. And although there is often a new face at the hotel every couple of visits, the team are so consistent and so welcoming that you really feel like they know you. It's great to take a break to wander across the golf course, with its amazing views, to visit the Clubhouse on the far side, again with a great group of people running it, where you can have a drink or a meal on the balcony overlooking the sea and the bustling city and port far below. Although we're back for a family visit in July 2018, staying for the first time in one of the villas in Palheiro Village, I don't think that I can wait that long. I'm already checking out a trip over for the early Spring.
When we arrived we were very impressed with the ambience of the hotel and how polite and efficient the staff were. However when we we shown to our room, a delux room in the main building, we were a little dissappointed with the decor which was very outdated. Having said that the room was spacious and the beds very comfortable. We found the evening meals to be very overpriced as although the quality and taste was good the portions were on the small side. The breakfasts were fine if you you just wanted a continental breakfast but if you wanted any hot food from the buffet the choice was extremely limited and not up to the standard of a 5 star hotel we expected. Our biggest criticism was that the golf course was below standard with the fairways being very dry ( and obviously not irrigated) and the bunkers unplayable due to a lack of sand. We feel it is totally unaacceptable to pay around 100 Euros a round only to find that the bunkers are unplayable. Such a shame as the layout of the course is fantastic, the greens are good, and the clubhouse and its staff superb.
The Casa Vehla hotel on the Palheiro estate, up in the hills above Funchal, is a somewhat old fashioned, but very comfortable boutique establishment where a generally older clientele enjoy good service and quality food in very attractive surroundings. It's about twenty minutes taxi ride from the airport, and once at the hotel, it's a taxi to anywhere or preferably a rental car which will enable you to see what the island has to offer. That said, driving on many of the islands roads away from Funchal do require a level of confidence and skill that some drivers may not feel happy with, but it's a shame to miss out on the spectacular scenery along the coast and into the mountainous areas in the middle of the island. The half board option is recommended unless you are prepared to travel out down the hill to find a local restaurant. The free wifi worked very well all over the property. From a friendly, efficient reception team to staff in the bar and restaurant who serve you with a courteous smile, a stay here will recharge the batteries. Housekeeping was a bit hit and miss as it was well into the afternoon before our room was serviced on more than one occasion although it didn't really matter. The spa was a welcome retreat although in spite of rules to the contrary, the German guests seemed keen to show off their naked, middle aged bodies, be warned!! The golf course on the estate looked more suited to mountain goats than series golfers, but it seemed very busy although the green fees seemed very steep for a course like that. A most enjoyable week, but if ever in Madeira again, we would be more comfortable at a hotel where walking out to bars and restaurants was a possibility.
A great place for a short golf break with friends. Good food, adequate rooms and good service. Spa a little disappointing. Funchal only accesible by transport so maybe a spilt stay vacation would be good. Casa Velha for golf and Funchal for sea and town and easier access to other attractions.
We stayed 4 nights in this very individual and elegant hotel which is set in a 200 year old manor house. The room (no 2) was on the top floor of the main house and was spacious with a lovely view over the garden. There are many other rooms in the wings of the hotel as well. Breakfast was buffet style with freshly cooked food on offer as well, beautifully presented in the conservatory and dining room. The staff are exceptional, speaking many languages and always with a smile on their faces. It is a 15 minute drive up a hill from Funchal so we stayed in every evening sampling the dining room on one night and having light bar food on the other evenings which was a welcome change from the formality of the dining room. The grounds are pretty and there is the added bonus of an outdoor and indoor pool with spa facilities. The golf course is 5 minutes away by shuttle bus if you don't rent a car. Highly recommend and we would certainly return.
If you want a quiet location in beautiful gardens then this is the hotel for you. It is a Madeiran equivalent of a country house hotel. Set in the hills on the outskirts of Funchal is a an opportunity to live in an elegant environment, if only for a few days. Everything was done with grace and charm.
Beautiful hotel high up in the Madeira hills. So peaceful and elegant, relaxing and calm. No energy needed unless you play golf. Food was amazing, spa services delightful, staff were brilliant. Loved this hotel and everything about it.
My partner and I stayed here for our first visit to Madeira and I doubt we could have found anywhere more tranquil, secluded or beautifully appointed. The staff looked after our every need, and more, the food was wonderful and our room spacious and pristine. Thankyou to everyone for making our stay so enjoyable.
