We had a marvellous time in Casa Velha on the Palheiro estate. The garden rooms were beautiful, equipped with safe, tea and coffee, loads of storage, vanity mirror and large bath/shower room. It was peaceful and has lovely gardens which should not be missed. Breakfast was great with lots of variety and we had 2 dinners here during our week stay which were both great. Staff were fantastic, very welcoming and happy but not intrusive. We had a small problem with the shower which was dealt with so quickly and without fanfare. Played golf too on their lovely course and the staff there were amazing too. Minibus drops you into Funchal twice a day (do book as this can get busy) and there’s a bus service to the clubhouse, although this doesn’t start until 9am which was too late for us. Thoroughly recommend this place for a peaceful and relaxing break.
Beautiful hotel in stunning location. We stayed in the the main building which I would recommend as we had views over the garden and four large windows in the room, which was large enough to sit in comfortably.. very nice library. The weather wasn’t brilliant, but a good shuttle bus service will drop you off in Funchal. And we took a car tour which was excellent. Great for some R&R
Casa Velha do Palheiro is nice and at the same time not a 5 Star Hotel. For playing Golf It is perfect and the Garden is beautifull. The Kitchen has a good Standard. We stayed 2 Weeks and we would like to get back again.
A relaxing, peaceful and wonderful break away from the hustle and bustle of our daily routine! Everyone at the Casa Velha do Palheiro took pride in their work. Thank you for making our stay a memorable one!
To say we enjoyed our stay is to say nothing. We loved every second of being in Casa Velha. Every moment of this holiday was made special by the wonderful staff of this magical place. I could go on and on but a few highlights include: 1. Dom Luis, the manager of the restaurant. This is the person who is surely enjoying his job and this translates into the highest standards of hospitality. Luis, Braulio, Margarida and their colleagues made sure each and every request we pit forward were met with care, thought and diligence. 2. The Chef deserves a huuuuge round of applause. Every single dish from the Light menu and from the Daily menu we tried was beyond expectations. Consistency in quality is a sure sign of a great chef. I wouldn’t have entrusted my demanding taste to anyone else! 3. We were immediately offered a room upgrade upon our arrival which was a much appreciated gesture! The room Conde Carvalhal on the first floor in the main building was one of the highlights. It is ENORMOUS and super stylish. If you can afford, go for it. 4. The tennis court is not of the best quality but was always available and what could be more important?:) Other facilities on offer which were not much used by anyone but us included table tennis, small fitness room, spa, outside pool... we had it all to ourselves most of the time! Overall, our impression of Madeira would have not been the same if we had chosen to stay in any other property in the island. Casa Velha offers the ultimate Madeira experience. I strongly recommend to anyone who values quality.
The location and grounds are stunning, but the property is sadly mismanaged on all dimensions. The bathroom had cracked tiles and a mysterious red stain in the bathtub and a broken doorknob (photos attached). Front desk and housekeeping were a comedy of errors too horrifying to detail in this post. The restaurant manager was the bright spot in all the darkness, but they served obviously burnt pastries in the breakfast buffet on his day off. Worst of all when asked to speak with a manager, I was informed that he or she was not reachable over the weekend. The hotel does a busy trade with mainly English and German couples of a certain age and of a provincial country club set. They stay in order to play golf in the sun at the nearby course. These clients perhaps don't mind the poor state of maintenance or the laughable level of service, nor the boarding school food; but it is extremely disappointing for anyone expecting the typical experience at other Relais et Chateaux properties around the world.
Such a relaxing and charming place to stay with magnificent views and friendly, professional staff. A testing golf course literally on the doorstep, wonderful food and wine in the restaurant. All in all a marvellous week away from winter was enjoyed by my wife and I.
Almost definitely the most beautiful place we have ever stayed together. The main house was very refined and genteel. We lived the food and thought it very good value for money. The gardens are amazing and the main reason for our visit. My husband a keen golfer thought it was one of the most beautiful and challenging he d ever see. The spa and pool were fantastic. All in all we were thoroughly pampered.
Wonderful period hotel with amazing extensive gardens and also a golf course on the estate. Comfortable rooms and very quiet. Good food and attentive staff. Our bedroom was in an annexe a few yards from the main entrance and it was spacious with a generous en-suite.
Maybe not quite perfection..., but this small intimate hotel is unbeatable for location and ambience in Madiera. Set high above the city of Funchal with verdant well tended colourful botanical gardens on one side of the hotel and what must surely be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Europe on the other, the setting is superb. Excellent walks within the overall grounds with glorious glimpses of the city and the ocean far below. The staff are friendly and helpful, our rooms, although slightly dated, was exceptionally clean and well equipped, and there is a small but well presented pool and spa block only metres away. It was too cold to use the lovely looking outdoor pool and we hope that one day it will be heated for those visiting in the winter as the indoor pool, although relaxing, is too small for swimmers. Food was good too. Excellent and adequate choice for breakfast, small cafe in the gardens for lunch, and a splendid offering in a lovely dining room for dinner. Altogether a wonderful experience that we will repeat. This hotel is not cheap and perhaps the dining is overpriced, but the whole experience was magical.....sun is almost guaranteed but make sure that the temperature will suit what you want to do.
