BW Premier Collection Grand Hotel Royal

Recent guest reviews

We have recently returned from 9 nights stay at the Grand Hotel Royal and can highly recommend it. Old world charm and great location. Spotlessly clean, great pool area with bar and friendly welcoming staff are the highlights for us. Previous positive reviews have said it all and so I won't repeat them all here again. A few practical points from our stay... ROOM: We had a front sea view room. The balcony is very small as it also contains the AC unit and only has space for 2 chairs and a table, but it is just possible to sit out there. AC worked great. Some road noise overlooking the front but we did not find this too bad and outweighed by the lovely view and people watching. Some people have said the shower was small, but we did not find it so and we are of a "reasonable" mature size. The double bed was harder than we are used to at home but a good kingsize and still very comfortable. Maid who did our room service was superb. Pool towels every day. The big plus for us was the Pool area and we visited it every day. Spotlessly clean, just about enough beds ( some annoying people leaving towels for hours and not using them!), shade available, great bar for drinks and lunch, lovely size pool and water not too cold. Reception helpful with bus and train timetables and for hiring of bikes. There is a bus stop immediately opposite the hotel entrance where you can get the bus to Pisa for 3 euros each way, takes about 45 mins. Buy tickets in the Tabaccheria on the promenade before boarding. We were Breakfast only and found it to be OK, although very much the same every day. Coffee is very strong so ask for extra hot water if you like it a little milder first thing! Our one disappointment of the stay was not being able to get into the hotel restaurant for the Saturday night Buffet as it was fully booked, despite us trying to book early in the morning. So if you want to do this book days before! We ate outside the hotel every night in several of the many restaurants. We never had a bad meal although service can vary. Our favourite where we ate for 4 nights was Casablanca (about 100 yds to the right opposite the hotel) great food, friendly efficient service and run by a lovely family. Wi-fi is free and worked well for us in our room and by the pool.

Spent a long while deciding on a hotel in Viareggio and chose Grand Hotel Royal based on reviews, location and the fact it has a pool. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. The reception staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Lent me adapters as I had mistakenly brought US ones (!), provided train and bus timetables and answered all queries. Mario and Sara in the bar are charming and have a great rapport with guests. The rooms are very clean and well appointed. A few niggles; bed was a bit hard for my liking and the shower and hairdryer a bit feeble and the TV only gets one English Channel ( BBC News). However, these things did not spoil a lovely stay. Garden and pool are beautiful and all staff very polite and helpful. This is clearly a hotel favoured by an older clientele but my teenage daughter loved it!!

Love this place. It was a second visit, so we knew the ropes. Reception accommodated all requests we made. Nice to see the same staff as before, they just keep getting better. Mario makes the best cocktails. The garden is great to relax in. Amazing pool to cool down. Dinner service did it for us. Lovely sea view to watch sun rise and set. Cannot wait to return. Told all our friends about this place. See you soon.

We recently stayed at the Grand Hotel Royal and first impressions were not good as the reception staff were totally indifferent and not vaguely interested in greeting new visitors. The hotel was very good and the room was great with a decent bathroom and effective air conditioning. The cleaners were good. We had a sea view which was pleasant, if you like to see row upon row of sun loungers. We had read reviews saying that the road at the front can be noisy and you should ideally look for a room on floor 5. We did but on the first morning I was woken at 6.45 by someone thrashing their Vespa along the sea front (other makes of scooters are available). On Friday night there was loud music from over the road until early in the morning. If you want a quiet room, forgo the sea view and stay at the rear of the hotel. On our third day we met Ilenya on the reception and she was like a breath of fresh air. She was so helpful and obviously not trained by the same person as the reception staff on the first 2 days. She explained how to get to Cinque Terre and Lucca whereas the person I asked the day before could not be bothered. The pool was excellent and the pool staff and lifeguard were extremely friendly. The bar staff were friendly and helpful. We like to eat out when on holiday but actually ate at the hotel 3 evenings and found that the food was first class. One night they did a Tuscan buffet and we loved it. Again the restaurant staff were good. Overall, plus points: • Nice hotel • Excellent room, bathroom and air con • Wonderful pool & staff • First Class restaurant • Some reception staff Bad points • Noisy at the front of the hotel at times • Reception staff on the first 2 days were dire

A charming hotel in a classy resort. Grand rooms, high ceilings, fabulous sea views and smarty dressed attentive staff give it feel of timelsess quality. We arrived here after a long weekend yomping around Florence and Siena, so wanted somewhere calm and relaxing, which is exactly what we got. We particularly enjoyed lazy afternoons in the pool area and gardens, which were beautifully maintained. There's no need to repeat the many positive reviews, so I'll comment on some practicalities that might help others. We arrived by direct train from Florence, which took 1 hour 40 minutes, booked on the excellent Trenitalia website for less then 10 euros. The station is an easy 20 minutes walk from the hotel, on the flat; just head to the seafront and turn right. We flew home from Pisa, and the local E25 bus service stops literally right in front of the hotel and takes you direct to the airport terminal. It runs every hour (hotel reception has the timetable) and the run takes about an hour; it is a nice journey trundling through local towns and countryside, and the centre of Pisa, for only 3 euros. Ulnless you have lots of bags or are in a great hurry, I wouldn't even think about a taxi for this easy journey. For food, we ate once in the lovely hotel dining room, and had afternoon snacks in the great bar by the pool. In the evenings we mostly ate out at one of the many pizzerias on the prom; for example we had some fine pizza and pasta at OIiviera, just a few minutes walk to the left of the hotel. This restaurant also has a tabac counter where you can buy tickets for the local buses. All in all a lovely stay, and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

We stayed at this hotel for a 4 night stay. It's a lovely Art Deco building with large corridors and large ceilings, which gives it a grand appearance. Our room was a good size on the 2nd floor facing the sea with a balcony which was nice to sit out on. The bathroom however was very small, with small not very inviting cubicle shower. They do supply though thick large Bath towels as well additional towels for the Swimming pool. There is a hair dryer of sorts but is an odd design resembling a hose vacuum cleaner. There are also coffee making facilities. Air conditioning worked well. There is also free wifi which was ok but not great and occasionally was so slow that I couldn't open pages that I need to see etc.The swimming pool sits at the back of the hotel in pleasant surroundings, is a good size and there is a small bar area for drinks etc. Unlike many of the reviews I have read of this hotel the buffet breakfast is ok and not massive in my opinion but I am comparing to a recent stay at similar class hotel we stayed at in Cortona which was amazing. There is is a limited cereal choice, cold meats is ham or salami and lack the wide variety of cold meat selections I have seen in other hotels in Italy. Hot food is scrambled egg which was lukewarm on each of the days we stayed at the hotel, sausage, bacon and pizza. There do have though a good selection of bread and fruit. We didn't try the main restaurant in the evening so can't comment but prices seem OK and in line with other restaurants in the area.Service is efficient and business like but a little detached and does come over as being particularly friendly or inviting. Overall it is a good hotel but doesn't warrant a very good rating in my opinion.

A very grand hotel in an excellent location on the main seafront road. The building is of the very grand Italian style and is magnificent for this. The swimming pool at the rear and the grounds are very comfortable and welcoming. Staff excellent and looked after us well. A great way to see the splendour of this old school Italian resort.

If you like ultra-modern minimalism this isn’t the place for you. But if you want some old-fashioned luxury in delightful surroundings it’s great! The building itself dominates the Viareggio seafront and walking into the huge marble-floored reception hall is like stepping back to the 1920s - definitely in a nice way. There’s a noticeable air of “The Great Gatsby” about it. This was my first visit - the little woman’s second - and I enjoyed every minute of it. The rooms are large high-ceilinged with bags of storage space and big well-equipped bathrooms. The public rooms have a relaxed feel about them as if you’re still living in the era when the hotel was opened. The buffet breakfast is excellent with everything you could wish for whether you want to be Continental or stick to traditional English. You sweep down the wide marble staircase to dinner in the gorgeous dining room which is also excellent with a wide choice of dishes and has an air of unhurried refinement you don’t often find these days - nice cutlery, big linen napkins and thick tablecloths. The bar is always busy before and after dinner and there is a warm friendly atmosphere as everyone catches up on the day’s events either sitting inside or enjoying the sun in the garden. The large swimming pool at the rear is immaculately clean - as is the whole hotel - with a lifeguard always on duty. All the staff were friendly, cheerful and helpful. The hotel is in a great position just a five minute stroll along the pedestrian precinct to the harbour and the town centre. Local buses stop directly outside the hotel or there are cycle lanes - completely separated from the traffic - which run for miles along the coast. Would I stay there again? You bet.

Beautiful, grand hotel with very friendly staff. We were given a free upgrade to a side sea view room with a balcony which we really appreciated. Room was very spacious and clean. A hospitality tray with coffee and tea was an unexpected treat. There is a massive choice of food and drinks at breakfast. You can choose from a wide variety of cheeses, meats and breads. The hot option includes hot dog sausages, bacon and scrambled egg. There was also a huge array of pastries, yoghurts, and around six different fruit juices. Dinner was served in a different larger room. It was 4 courses starting with a self service salad buffet. The remaining 3 courses you chose at breakfast. The food was very good and portions were pretty big. A good range of choices for vegetarians. Very high standard of presentation. The hotel has beautiful gardens with lots of seating and a large undercover area with table and chairs. The swimming pool has plenty of sun loungers and the pool is a very decent size. There is also a handy snack bar. Towels for the pool were replaced on a daily basis. We had two deckchairs and a small table with parasol included with our deal at the Beach Bagno Annita just across from the hotel. This was scrupulously clean with childrens play equipment, toilets and changing cubicles. The snack bar had a really extensive menu with reasonable prices. We enjoyed cocktails there which at 5 euros were excellent value! Viareggio is ideally situated to visit nearby places like Florence, Pisa and Lucca, all of which we travelled to on the train. The train station is about a 20 minute brisk walk away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it. Thanks for our upgrade. It was lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by, while admiring the sea views.

Situated right on the promenade of the upmarket resort of Viareggio. Large spacious rooms, beautiful food with waiter service at dinner. Superb menu choice each day and so beautifully presented. Everything is spotless gardens, pool, bar and reception. Helpful knowledgeable staff. Could not recommend more highly would be happy to go again.
