Staff was very helpful. Bathroom appeared to have been recently updated and clean. The rest of the room was really sad. Very shabby carpet and bedding. The electricity needed updating as well. The lights flickered for about 5 seconds before coming on and one fixture in the bathroom didn't work. The hair drier was also non functionaledi. Location was great. 2 minute walk from Natural History Museum and underground station!

It was our first European vacation. Everything was a perfect location stores, sightseeing, the staff was extremely helpful. We felt right at home. We're planning our trip for next year and we're hoping to stay there with our two boys. I will definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and family.

The location is perfect. Near to the South Kensington tube station and museums this hotel was perfect. I had a lovely stay. The continental breakfast was a money saver and the staff was very nice. Definitely old style linens and decorations but I found it quaint and English.

I loved this hotel! It has a very English feel to it. The location is great. Central London- South Kensington Stop (Piccadilly line which is direct to Heathrow). The staff was very nice and helpful. My room was well appointed if not luxurious. I had a deluxe double which had a giant bathtub and instant hot water. The new flat screen TV had plenty of channels as well. Management left a nice bottle of wine and chocolate in my room to make my stay even more enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who wants a nice centrally located hotel.

While the hotel is modest, I found the room fine and the staff helpful and pleasant. I used their maps, discussed whether sites were within walking distance, which was very useful. I would book again.

Overall my experience was mixed but in the end I'd recommend this hotel. On the plus side -- 2 blocks to the South Kensington tube station, perfectly nice continental breakfast or english breakfast, outstanding and very deep bath tub. On the negative, the wireless service is £10 a day and it's really for 1 device only so I had to get them to give me duplicate accounts (at no extra cost). And, they were not keen on honoring the upgrade offered this site to free continental breakfast and a better room - though after arguing they did. For the first night the room was in the basement with a bright light shining in the room and very little natural light but they moved me after that. Some of the staff are super friendly and helpful. Others are less so but it's a great deal for that neighborhood.

Charming lobby. Staff could use a lesson in smiling

This hotel is exactly what you expect from a boutique hotel. Yes the rooms are very small, yet very charming. The whole hotel is quaint. Staff was polite and helpful. Room was clean and warm for our December stay. The location is excellent! A couple blocks from train, walking distance from shopping, museums and many sights. Other sights and shopping a few short train stops away. Would definitely recommend and choose to stay again.

I stayed at this hotel for more than a week in September. Overall speaking, it was better than expected as I had read some bad reviews about the hotel before the booking. I decided to choose this hotel because of its location. The hotel is close to the tube station south kensington that connects to the piccadilly, circle and district lines. There are bus stops right around the corner and by the station as well. Very close to V&A which is a can't miss in London in my opinion. And there are many other attractions near by: national history museum, science museum, royal albert hall, hyde park, serpentine gallery, harrods all within walking distance. Complimentary tea bags, coffee and sugar refilled daily in the room which is ultra nice especially after a long walking, rainy and cold day and intensive sightseeing. The hotel offers wifi service at a rate of GBP 15 for 24 hours. ButIi was able to pick up another wifi service provider's signal at the hotel and paid GBP 15 for 5 day access. It was stable and fast. My room was facing the street, so I can hear cars passing and people talking. I can also hear door slamming, elevator coming and going and people in rooms next to me. Light sleepers would probably find this annoying. I didn't try the hotel's breakfast as there are many other restaurants by the tube station.

Not bad but not sure it was exceptional. Excellent staff helps a lot. Location is amazing for touring London. Very small hotel with an elevator that will only hold 1 or 2 people - some might be clausterphobic. Some may find the post war style to be quaint and attractive, but seemed to need remodeling to me. Attractive lobby makes leaves you expecting more from the room.

Gainsborough Hotel London is a very good location to stay. The local shops and restaurants are great and a good value. The room cost is a real value. My room was clean and nice small with 2 single beds, typical london. The room could use a little updating but was good place to sleep in a safe cool neighborhood. Some rooms on the first floor were a little nicer that the ones upstairs.

Close to the South Kensington tube entrance that has a small courtyard to start your day with breakfast or wind down your day at the local pub. Very reasonable rates when I went. Clean and comfortable.

The hotel was in a good location near a metro stop and the room were a good size for London. The room was clean but the bed and shower were low quality.

Spent three nights at the Gainsborough and had a nice stay. I wasn't expecting too much based on the other reviews, but wanted a room that was clean, comfortable and with air conditioning. That was the Gainsborough. It's a typical London Hotel, so was expecting a smaller room, but was pleased to have room enough to move around. We really liked the location in that it was easy to catch public transportation, the hop on - hop off tourist buses and around a number of restaurants and grocery stores. The South Kensington Station was just three blocks away.

Did not expect too much after reading the reviews. Reserved two rooms, one for my parents and the other for my sister and myself. I specifically wanted a place that was in a central location, close to restaurants and with air conditioning. The Gainsborough fit the bill. The room was showing it's age, but the a/c worked well and since I wasn't expecting a tremendous amount, it worked for us. By US standards, the room is on the small side, but not as small as some of the other rooms that I had in London. The hotel is a block from the the V&A and Natural History Museums as well as the Hop On and Off sightseeing buses. There are a number of restaurants in the area.

The Gainsborough was perfect for us! As a return visitor to London after many years, I was so happy to be here. The Gainsborough is quaint and perfectly British! The full English breakfast was delicious and the breakfast room looked out on a beautiful street every morning. When we first arrived, the lift was broken for 2 days and we were on the 4th floor! But the staff was so apologetic and kind that it didn't really matter - we looked at it as good exercise! We would return here. Great location in South Kensington - very close to the Underground and great restaurants. Also around the corner from the V & A museum and the Natural History museum.

I wasn't expecting the superb personal service I received. The ambiance of the lounge reception area very comforting and closeness to museums superb restaurants including PJ's bar and grill was great.

Staff nice. Bare bone basics. Room in basement. Location excellent, near South Kens tube station and Museum of Nat. Hist. Some problem with noise from neighbors. Room so small couldn't sit well at desk. Some fleas or something that was tickling my legs when i was at desk...

this hotel was in the best location. Close to the tube and very safe neighborhood. We were out late a few nights and felt very safe. The rooms are small but everything else was great. Many tour companies will will pickup from this hotel. We had the best time.

First off, this is not anywhere near a four star hotel. I travel to London frequently and I know that the Brits can accept a bit less in creature comforts than their American cousins, but this was ridiculous. The lobby and exterior are fine, but the interior and the rooms are very poor. They have a number of rooms in the basement of the hotel, and I was unfortunate enough to get one. Very small, with scuff marks all over the walls, broken and stained furniture, a 1920's era bath with poorly functioning fixtures. Cramped, dirty, out of date. The bed was terrible, and if the place wasn't so awful I would have considered sleeping on the floor. I was booked for two nights, but checked out after one to go to a Marriott. A very poor hotel.
