Vegas’s kid brother has the thrills without the crowds

Just a little under a hundred miles south of Las Vegas, resting on the Nevada-Arizona border, is the hidden gem that is Laughlin. Laughlin presents an all-around inner-city experience in the same way that Las Vegas does, but without the big crowds. Visitors can play blackjack, enjoy exquisite cuisine and a fast-paced nightlife. And as it's adjacent to the Colorado River, Laughlin lets you cool off during the summer months, with everything from heart-thumping raft rides to tranquil cruises.

Where to stay

Laughlin hotels can cost as low as $24 per night, or visitors can even find a suite that comes with an amazing view of the Colorado River for around $140. With sprawling complexes like the Tropicana Express and the Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall, there's also a healthy amount of hotel and casino combos to rival Vegas, so guests can enjoy the fun of slot machines without having to pay taxi fare to get across town.

Things to see and do
Davis Dam

Some 67 miles north of the Hoover Dam, the Davis Dam is an impressive sight and well worth a day trip. Two hundred feet high, it stops the might of Lake Mohave beyond, and views of the Colorado River shoreline stretch into the distance. Come here for a tranquil spot of fishing or a more energetic day out on the jets-skis.

Grapevine Canyon

See the ancient carvings of the Grapevine Canyon petroglyphs at this remote and culturally significant spot in the Bridge Canyon Wilderness Area. Around 700 of these mysterious drawings give insight into Native American heritage, while Spirit Mountain offers countless climbing and trekking routes coursing through gullies and crags. Access is available by Highway 95 from Laughlin.

Golfing

For those looking to hit the links during their stay, there are plenty of options to choose from. Within Laughlin there is one golf course, but there are many more in nearby towns. Bullhead City and Mojave Valley, Arizona are less than twenty miles away. These cities offer beautiful golf resorts for fun and relaxation, with impressive landscapes to match.

Entertainment

With musicians, magicians, comedians and an assortment of expos that come through town, Laughlin hotels always have a variety of entertainment acts available for visitors. Some of the most popular events that come to Laughlin include arts and crafts shows, car shows and even an annual international film festival that takes place in October.

Dining

Much like Las Vegas, Laughlin offers a plethora of dining options. There are restaurants and all-you-can-eat buffets at nearly every hotel and casino, and most are open for extended hours for those seeking a bite in the twilight hours. Generally, hearty steaks, log-fired pizzas and filling burgers characterize the fare here, as well as many food courts and chain restaurants for an inexpensive and familiar taste.

Best Time to Visit

Don't be fooled by Laughlin's desert location. Although temperatures reach upwards of 110 degrees in the summer, the winter time can be quite chilly. The area's desert landscape brings a dry heat that can begin as early as April and continue until mid-fall, but there is easy access to the Colorado River and pools at nearly every hotel and casino. During winter, temperatures can reach 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit at night, so bring some warm clothes when visiting any time between the months of November and February. Also bear in mind that sporadic rainfall and potential flash floods may occur during the summer months.
