Stayed 4 nights as our base for visiting Tuscany (san Gimignano, Sienna, Florence). Nice clean place, 2 pools (not open yet when we were there). Breakfast was good with a cheerful Bon Giorno every morning. Food at restaurant was very good and reasonably priced (try their own wine for only 13 Euros a bottle !) , we came back every night to hotel to chill and have a great meal. Close to train station which has free parking and offers a 15 min ride to Florence every hour. Thanks for a great stay
Stayed for 9 nights B&B. Excellent location for visiting all main attractions in Tuscany. Easy access to train station for trips into Florence. Rooms clean and comfortable with stunning views. Breakfast lovely, and all staff very friendly and helpful. We will visit again. Sandra and Family, Lancaster.April2017
Amazing views. Comfortable bed. Helpful personnel. The restaurant was the best we visited in Italy (!!). Cheese and meat plates with vine were the most delicuous things I have even ate! The breakfast was disappointed.
We stayed for 5 nights in October using it as a base to explore Tuscany in our hire car. Flew into Pisa and drove to the Villa about 45 mins away. We had upgraded online from a room to an apartment however as soon as we checked in we were told that the apartments were self catering and breakfast was not included. When we checked the apartment we weren't impressed. It was dark with a view of the apartment across the courtyard. Back at reception we asked the lovely girl on the desk if we could be downgraded and after speaking to the owner complied with our request. Very happy, The room was much nicer and opened out onto the pool and a view of the rolling hills, beautiful, and free breakfast was back on the menu. The location was perfect and it must be great to visit in the summer. WiFi is free but a bit hit and miss at times. Breakfast is standard continental. The room had a free mini bar which I didn't realise was free until checkout when they didn't charge me for drinks. There is a train station about 5 mins away which we used instead of the hire car to visit Florence and Pisa. Less hassle than driving, finding a parking space and worrying about inadvertently driving into a controlled zone and being fined. Train fare is also only a couple of Euros and was fast and comfortable. You could do all of your travelling around from this station if driving concerns you. The restaurant wasn't very impressive. Its in a big tent at the back of the main building. It was cold (servers were wearing coats) and not very impressive food. If you want great food in a lovely setting visit Edy Piu, a restaurant about 5 minutes drive away up in the hills in Lastra. It can be a bit daunting getting there especially in the dark as its at the top of a narrow winding uphill road. Overall if I go back to Tuscany I would definitely stay here again.
Very clean and well presented rooms , ours was a basic choice but comfortable and well maintained . It's been written about already but the staff here on Reception are very positive and helpful , they have looked after us very well ( bar is open very late ) and on our late arrival provided food and gave excellent instructions for local transport to get into Florence by train @ 5.20 euro return . Great location - weather for us was dire but we made the most of it by going to Florence by train and then Pisa by hire car . There are some mixed reviews about the restaurant ( which is a separate business) but don't let that put you off the villa which is lovely , This is actually complex of buildings with several sets of accommodation - lots of outdoor equipment and some BBQs around the site. I imagine it's very busy in the summer so please read other reviews that apply to the high season ... as we went in October Good choice for us and with some of the EasyJet deals making it very competitive for price when booked through easyJet holidays,.
Well furnished, spacious rooms and wonderfully scenic grounds make for an incredible stay at this hotel. Breakfast was also a treat with. Dont think twice when booking this hotel. Owners are very helpful and hands on. They were present at breakfast to oversee the guests experiences were good.
We stayed at Villa Saulina for a week and used as our "away from it all" base from which to explore Florence and the beautiful surrounding Tuscany region. This is a perfect location if you want to stay in a beautiful countryside setting, the views are very special. Our apartment was two storey and much larger than expected and would very comfortably sleep 5 with a terrace area and charming rustic features. We ate at the restaurant which was excellent although also took advantage of days out to collect local produce to stay in too eat dinner after busy days. The kitchen was area perfectly adequate in which to cook simple stove top suppers. You would need a car, we used our hire car to get to Lastra A Signa station each day where you can drive too easily in a few minutes but would be too long to walk and quite a dangerous road with no pathway. Park at the station and 2 stops to Florence at a cost of 5.20 euro return. Some practicalities to mention, from Pisa airport very easy route on the Firenze Livorno superstrada continue for about fifty minutes, coming off at the turning for Ginestra. The car pick up desks at Pisa airport are located in such a way the exit is signposted to the superstrada (some car hire desks close at 10pm so check arrangements). You could easily catch a train from Pisa to Lastra a Signa although beware of the train times as the last one appears to be early evening and not all trains stop at Lastra a Signa. Also take some insect repellent and good luck! Even with repellant we were bitten every day as remember you are in the countryside. some anti histamine may be wise as I do not usually suffer allergies or hay fever but I did have a problem with this in the countryside. My opinion would be to make the most of the stay a car would be needed although you could arrange a taxi to Lastra a Signa abou 15 euro each day if you factor in this cost and trains go from there daily in all directions or to Florence. Villa Saulina provides the best of several options to explore the beautiful Chianti region /Tuscan Hills and Florence/ Pisa. A beautiful drive if you have a car right from the villa to Certaldo a beautiful but small and not so busy medieval hilltop town. we would definitely recommend Villa Saulina as a beautiful and peaceful retreat from which to explore this amazing region.
We had a mixed time at Hotel Saulina. When we arrived our booked two-bed apartment wasn’t available due to an unclear ‘problem’. We were told it would only be one or two days. Then we were told it may not be fixed at all during our stay. The one bed apartment we were given wasn’t great: it was poorly decorated, had very basic furniture, poor self-catering equipment and the children had to sleep on a grotty sofa bed in the kitchen. This was very disappointing start. After we complained to our holiday company, we were given a new two bed apartment five days into our 10 day holiday. This apartment was better but also wasn’t high quality with a broken shower door and cheap fittings. We received a small discount back for the inconvenience but it put a dampner on the holiday. Overall the hotel is good but a little tired. The hotel is split into several apartment blocks. The ones nearer the hotel look nicer and have the nicer pool. These may be 4* but the other blocks certainly aren’t. Some areas just need updating and a bit of TLC. My kids (8 and 10) thoroughly enjoyed the pools and the freedom and it was nice to relax in peaceful surroundings. There are several cats who live in the grounds and these occupied all of the kids who loved playing with them. We didn’t hire a car and caught the train to Lastra A Signa which is just 5 minutes in a taxi or bus. There is little immediately around the hotel of interest. There is a supermarket in Lastra and a couple of grocery shops in Malmantile if you want to experience traditional Italian shopping. If you want to do any exploring or get supermarket food shopping a car is really necessary. Eating at the hotel isn’t great: we were told there were no lunch/snacks available when we asked. The hotel restaurant wasn't very good either and the owner was awful, completely ignoring us when we first walked in. The restaurant food isn’t the usual quality we’ve experienced in Italy before but the pizzas were good. The breakfast was OK with a reasonable choice of food including, croissants, bread, ham, cheese, fruit, yoghurt and the breakfast staff were very friendly. There is a dreadful self-service coffee machine which we used until the last day when we discovered the staff would make you a proper cappucinno from a separate coffee machine if you asked! It was very annoying not to know this and there are no signs. Mosquito protection is also essential as most of us were bitten to death! One other thing I hadn’t seen mentioned on Trip Advisor was that the hotel is under the flight path into Florence. Planes fly fairly low every twenty minutes. This isn’t as bad as it sounds and my children had fun ‘racing the planes’.
We took a "tour of Italy" and this was by far my favorite part of our visit. Wonderful staff, breathtaking views and fabulous dining. We had breakfast by the pool each day followed by shopping in the nearby Centre. It was amazing. I cannot wait to come back!!!
