We stayed at the Grand National Hotel in a lake view room and we were thrilled with the size and luxuriousness of our room. We came to understand that not all lake view rooms are as big as ours - it may be luck of the draw. So ask for one of the bigger rooms (same rate) when booking. We were in 416. We were greeted with champagne at check in and felt like we had the run of the place as the bar and restaurants were big and beautiful but nearly empty (due to August stay?). We made good friends with bartender Dario (spelling?) who could not have been nicer. We loved the location and the view. It was an easy walk along the lake to Old Town Lucerne. Overall it was a great experience. You will pay more but I highly recommend it.

I have only stayed in 5 star hotels for the past 10 years and I am sad to say that this is the worst service/experience that I ever had in a hotel with alleged standards of a 5 star hotel. Although, the property is beautiful and our lakeside room was luxurious, the service unfortunately was the antithesis of the later. There were so many wrong things that happened, I don't know where to begin so I will just sum up the highlights. When I asked the concierge Susan which restaurant do you recommend she kept insisting on the Chinese restaurant on the hotel property. I explained that we were not interested in it at that time. She said all the restaurants all good in Lucerne. I replied but there must be one that sticks out for you that everyone in Lucerne talks about. Her reply was try the Chinese restaurant on the property. I chuckled from the ridiculous conversation that I had with the so called concierge who acted as if she started the job yesterday. Anyway, I found out which restaurants were good by one of the servers Marco who was excellent and quite professional. Interestingly enough, I went to make reservations 2 days later but since the music festival was in town, the gentleman at the front desk told me that all the good restaurants in town are booked. Lol. It would have been nice to be privy to that information in the first place when I asked Susan. Secondly, I had to pick up a rent a car on Saturday morning and my wife called for a cab 20 minutes prior. I went down and not to my surprise there was one cab there which was supposed to be used for another couple so the young lady explained that the area is quite busy and it is difficult to get a cab. I responded at 9am and she just shrugged her shoulders and looked like a deer in headlights which was the look by most of the staff. Anyway, the cab driver took me quickly because it was a short ride and told me what really happened was that the person who called from the hotel did not understand german and got into an argument with the dispatcher and hung up on him, thus 1 cab rather than 2. The second cab was never ordered. Finally, on my last night I asked a young gentleman named Mohammed for 3 waters for my room. He replied, " Didn't house keeping give you water and I said yes and he stated that I must pay for water because guests are only allowed one bottle each. I was in dismay and said you got to be kidding me because this never happened to me in any 5 star hotels that I stayed in the past. Upon my response,Mohammed scolded at me like a school child and explained to me the rules of the hotel about water in a condescending tone like I was some sort of a fool and then ended the conversation with a fake smile. These are just the highlights. There were several other incidents that happened which will be to long to write. On a positive note the restaurant staff was delightful and saved my experience from being a total disaster. Ricarda, Luigi and Marco were wonderful. The overall attitude of the staff was apathetic and I don't care type of an attitude with zero sense of urgency. Everyone was quite pleasant but didn't care about anything except for Mohammed who was quite rude and unprofessional. If I wanted to stay at a 2 Star hotel that is the service I would expect not for a 5 star hotel. Stay away from the national hotel if you expect any service. Additionally, my travel agent was informed and only works with high end clients and will not be sending guests there anymore and will contact her corporate contact about this horrific place.Poor Cesar Ritz would be rolling over in his grave, if he new how this property was run. The hotel has an excellent location, next to the lakefront promenade and close to attractions. I highly recommend a Junior Suite with the lake view, on the highest floor possible (to avoid noise at night). My husband and I appreciated the warm greeting from reception and a cheerful phone call to let us know when the room would be ready. Unfortunately breakfast was somewhat boring for the price. I'm not sure I'd recommend the bar either, we found the waiter to be a bit overbearing. That said, if you want a special view in a great location, it's worth checking out this hotel!

This is very grand hotel adjacent to the lake and within easy walking distance of Lucerne's main tourist attractions. We had a city view room which was well furnished but was in chronic need of air conditioning. We stayed during a period of unsettled weather where the outside temp was around 20C but the room remained stubbornly hot. It does have some kind of forced air induction system but isn't aircon. Now with a lakeside view you can probably open windows and let some air in but for city side rooms the noise of traffic makes this impractical. All the staff we dealt with were excellent and the hotel certainly has some good public rooms. However you have to pay an extra CHF25 to use the gym across the road and breakfast is charged at CHF35. We chose to get our breakfast outside in the various cafes for a lot less.

This hotel is great all around. It is in a perfect location that looks onto the lake, just gorgeous. It is near things to do and places to eat. It is maybe 15 minutes to the train station, and that was with us walking slowly and enjoying the city and water. The room we had was also wonderful. Very spacious, nice bed and big sitting area. The big bathroom was spotless and had very nice toiletries provided. We enjoyed opening up the windows and enjoying the warm weather. The lake is beautiful out of the lake view room and changes with the time of day-morning/noon/evening. I hope we get a chance to return here someday. We will stay again.

Great property, awesome location if you want to walk the town. Good in-house restaurants and fairly priced room service breakfast. Helpful staff. Only gripe would be no/poor air conditioning. During hot and humid June the room was too uncomfortable at night especially given how first class the rest of the experience was. Would be 5 stars with better climate control.

This a beautiful property on the banks of lake Lucerne. It is a heritage property and along with the Shwizerhoff is amongst the oldest hotels in the city. That said the rooms are nicely done up with a. Very courteous staff. We stayed in a city facing room as the lake facing ones were quite expensive. The room rates don't include breakfast and was the only hotel during our 2 week vacation to this country which didn't offer it. The location is quite good been next to the lake front and walk-in distance of the Blue balls festival (street music festival which happens in July with visiting artists from all over the world), Chappel bridge and the railway station. Restaurants are not too far if you want to explore around. Only criticism of the property are the prices which were a tad higher than I would pay for a property of this type especially with no breakfast. Housekeeping could have been a tad better too as we found broken glass on the carpet (probably from a wine glass which we could no longer find in the room). If you find good rates, I would recommend a stay at this hotel.

Staying in this hotel was like a fairytale. Right by the lake and blessed with amazing views of Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi from our balcony. The service was outstanding, and it felt like we were transported back into time with the room decor. Nice thing to see was a list of all the famous people who stayed in the hotel...puts things into perspective.

We stayed at the Grand National for the final two days of our 2 week vacation. The hotel is luxurious with a gorgeous view of the lake, located a short walk to the Old Town, and about a 15 minute walk to the train station. I originally booked a Deluxe room with a balcony and lake view. When we arrived the receptionist offered us a free upgrade to the Ritz Suite! When I inquired as to why we were chosen for this wonderful opportunity, I was told it was because I had booked directly through the hotel instead of using a third party. Good to know! Needless to say, the service was exceptional, and the choice of restaurants on the property, I believe there are 4 or 5, added to the convenience. The location was quiet since it was not in the city center. Everything was perfect!
