We arrived at the hotel without our bags after a mix up (delivered to a different hotel - our fault). The manager was so helpful and wonderful and went out of his way to assist. He organised for them to be transferred and made numerous calls on our behalf. The room was fine and clean but could have done with better lighting. I would definitely skip the breakfast as it was very basic.
We stayed for a 5 nights. Really best hotel. It is only 10 min walk from the Catedral. Very clean and large room, very comfortable bed and excellent breakfast. Friendly staff, but not speak good English. Thank you for the pleasant stay. I hope will be here again.
I have stayed at this hotel three times as the rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are always helpful and welcoming. As others have noted the hotel is centrally located, just a few moments walk from the old town with the airport bus stop right outside the front door. The rooms are reasonably priced with ensuite bathrooms. The rooms are not spacious but adequate and there are many restaurants nearby. I would certainly stay there again.
With our usual Santiago accommodation fully booked I was drawn to Hotel Universal by price and location. On the latter the hotel is yards from the old town and the airport bus stops and start from the hotel front door. From the outside you probably won't be aware that you are at a hotel. The foyer is small and unprepossessing. If you want a drink or a bite to eat (other than breakfast) you need to look nearby. The bedrooms, on the other hand are modern and comfortable. Add to that, the two receptionists we dealt with were very friendly and helpful. If my favourite haunt is unavailable on future visits to Santiago I'll endeavour to return to Hotel Universal.
After sleeping in hostels for the previews 8 nights, this modest hotel seemed like a luxury hotel: only had to share the room and bathroom with 1 person as opposed to 7 or maybe 20. There was no shortage of hot water. What a luxury! The hotel in general is a bit outdated but everything was working and clean. Other positives free WiFi and the location. It is within walking distance of the Cathedral and the historic center of the city. There are plenty of cafes on the main street for a quick breakfast if you don't want to pay 8 euros for the one served at the hotel. The airport bus stops at the door and around thee corner there is a taxi stand. Reception staff professional and helpful.
The location is brilliant especially if you are getting the bus from the airport, it couldn't drop you any closer unless it dropped you inside the door! Convenient for the old town too, it's clean and staff are friendly a bit patched up in places but all in all a good stay
Excellent location for the Cathedral and old town. Two minute walk. Room was very clean and neat but the hotel is a bit shabby especially the public areas. Reception staff very helpful. Only Spanish TV no English channels. No sound proofing in rooms so can be noisy depending on your neighbours. Alas ours were very noisy. Rooms at front of hotel face onto busy street so probably quite noisy also .Shower in bathroom very noisy and limited water flow but good temperature. WiFi was a bit 'iffy' but improved when I sat elsewhere in the hotel Nice breakfast room and lounge area on first floor. Breakfast (8 euro option - Jan 2016) was very good but no hot food option at all. A budget hotel at a budget price but fine for one or two nights. Best recommendation is proximity to what most people come to see in Santiago de Compostela.
This little gem is set between Zara's and Santander's bank, a stone throw away from the old winding streets and the cathedral. There is wifi and a plasma Tv and the other guests seem to be respectful of coming in in the early hours of the morning, families and couples mainly. The park located opposite the entrance to old part of the city prized of a ice rink set up for winter wonders.
The word that describes this hotel is basic. Everything about is very basic. Our room was smallish but modern and clean. Quite ok indeed and the bathroom was quite big actually. We paid 7,50 euros pp/per night for the, once again, very basic breakfast. In my home country it would have been worth the price but in Santiago you certainly can find more interesting alternatives for this price. One thing though is excellent about the Hotel Universal: the location. Adjacent to the historical town with the cathedral, buses going to both airport and bus station, 10 minutes walking to railway station, lots of nice restaurants and beer places/wine bars nearby.
It is to the west of the town. Good location. The staff were friendly and helpful on recommendations for places to visit and eat. The rooms are a bit dated and the hotel could do with some paint and new carpets. It is clean and comfortable. WIFI was terrible in the room. Breakfast was your normal continental. It was fine for a one night stay and good value for Santiago.
