We are at the Zazen since a few days and despite the not so good weather we are in love with the place. For sure it is not cheap but the level of service matches the cost of staying ;) Staff is here to offer you all the assistance you may need, the place is absolutely gorgeous, extremely clean, maxi relaxing, the food from breakfast to dinner is again not cheap but very very good, the beach is small but beautiful and well exposed with places in shadow and places in the sun. AND this resort is only 46 rooms so it never feels too crowded! The room we have is garden view which I would recommend for more tranquility ;) it is super clean, big, very comfortable and the house keeping service is fast, discrete and smart. We are not fan of big "all inclusive" resort and are always looking for quality and discretion, this place satisfies our expectations (which is not easy since I am French and quite picky ;)
We visited during Christmas and new year which means there were special party’s and entertainment. During the days we appreciated the laidback atmosphere and the kind and helpful staff. For outside entertainment you can take a taxi to Chaweng. Don’t drive any vehicle yourself because Thai traffic is hectic. The restaurant as well as the Zazen spa are top notch. The overall accommodation and full grown tropical garden are well taken care of and add to the feel good atmosphere. Zazen is next to the beach and there is a sweet water swimming pool at the premises.
We were very excited to spend the last week at Zazen on the beach with what we considered (and as per other nearby hotels) to be a high standard and far from cheap choice of accommodation. Unfortunately we booked right at the end of the rainy season and despite us getting sunshine and high temperatures in 5 other towns in Thailand we got very overcast and windy weather with high tides here. I know the hotel can’t do much about the weather but there was not much done to provide some sort of entertainment by the hotel to keep us from suicidal boredom! We did get two days of sunshine on our last two days but the beach was full of beach cleaners and bags of sand so no room for guests. These cleaners and fixers also seem to gather and hat outside our room every morning which was very frustrating. We did mention this to staff. Nothing done but we got an apology. The beach front bungalow we had was: BAD... - small and badly designed with layouts that caused near catastrophic falls and slips from the high bed platform and slippery steps down - lots and lots of ants. Reported several times. Cleared but they return in 12 hours or so - smelly bathroom drainage with rotten floorboards where an old larger toilet was replaced - lots of mosquitoes - no electronic deterrent as listed in documents - noisy from staff outside room - dirty fork left in room from day 1 left for the whole duration of our stay - broken flusher on toilet. Fixed quickly but shouldn’t be there on day 1 GOOD... - great pillows and soft linen - good towels Restaurant was: GOOD... - decent breakfast - good ingredients and choices - a la carte dinners were well made with good ingredients - nice crockery - good coffee BAD... - overstaffed with little added value - thoughtless design. No space for food covers while holding a plate. Just no space, awkward - pretentious menu and atmosphere - extremely overpriced a la carte menu - wrong cutlery (although nice) for various things like butter. Not easy to butter bread/toast with a steak type knife. And it’s not exactly 5 star if that’s what Zazen are going for. - overpriced bar - not great cocktails for the price charged. Flavours don’t quite mix well - fried eggs constantly undercooked General hotel feedback: - staff seem artificially friendly. I noticed many times staff in bad moods but it seems staff are told to say hello every single time they walk past or see any single guest. This is so annoying after the first few times unless genuine. Sometimes the smiles are genuine which is great and you really can tell. - annoying and frustrating noise outside rooms. Only decent days we had for weather were ruined by maintenance work. No offer to compensate This or apology in advance, just when we mentioned this at the restaurant and checkout. - room fittings switched without notice or communication. Our reading lamp removed in front of me without a word! Replaced with something inadequate - layout/route to beach rooms not ideal having to walk through restaurant every time - nice reception and checkout areas. Great to freshen up - tiny pool - bicycles available for free looked good although we didn’t use them - wife’s spa experience very good although not cheap
Zazen has managed to create an upmarket experience on a reasonable budget. The garden villa is tastefully decorated with modern Asian decor - the living area is spacious as is the outside terrace. The bathroom is lovely as are all the gardens and communal areas. All mod cons are included in the room including a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. The staff are helpful and unobtrusive in their tasks. Breakfast is amazing - a huge range of cooked options to order, beautifully presented, as well as the usual buffet selection including delicious mixed juices available on request. It is located between Fisherman's village (30 minute stroll away) and the resort of Maenam- also 30 minutes walk but transport is available on the street. The only disappointing element was the extraordinarily high prices in the restaurant and bar - probably the most expensive cup of coffee you could order anywhere in the world! The pool area is extremely small and beds are at a premium although there are more available at the beach. Highly recommend!
Can't say anything bad about this place. Extremely friendly staff, one of the best restaurants in thailand, very nice spa, quite private beach.. if you're looking for a relaxing time on koh samui, this is the place. Not much to do in the area around here, but chaweng beach within reach with only 15min drive. Every detail of this place is taken care of and you will feel instantly at home!
The thing that really makes or breaks a hotel for me is the staff. Without exception, everyone we encountered at Zazen was wonderful. They were so helpful giving us suggestions and helping us plan our time. Really can’t say enough good things about them. The resort itself is lovely too, nestled away in some lovely landscaped gardens, on a quiet side of the beach. Great views from the restaurant while we ate breakfast every morning. In terms of value for the money, it’s wonderful. The only thing that disappointed was dinner at the restaurant. It was quite pricey, but the food was unremarkable and the presentation kind of bizarre. We had way better food just on the side of the road for a couple dollars.
What a beautiful resort I could not complain about one thing, we stayed at Zazen for 11 nights and loved every second of it. The staff cannot do enough for you, the food is definitely the best on the island and the hotel itself is very romantic and tranquil with so much attention to detail. I could not recommend this boutique resort highly enough. So If you are thinking about booking you will not regret it.
Me and my fiancee love the resort so much. It is located at the far end of Bophut Beach, about 20 mins walk (2km) from Fisherman's Village. Unlike Chaweng, it is a quiet area with not much noise and shops around. The resort environment is quiet and natural. Definitely a perfect place for people to relax. We stayed in garden villa. Rooms are spaceous, tidy and clean. It was so relaxing to sit at the big sofa and watch tv every night. Breakfast is semi-buffet style, with lots of options to choose. Staff are very friendly and polite, with a smile always on their face. There is also a boutique shop inside the resort with lots of DVDs offered to lend. We had romantic stay in Zazen and recommend to couples visiting Koh Samui with no doubt.
We stayed here for a week and wish we could have stayed longer. We cannot say enough about the staff and everyone there. Ryad, Mira & Margeaux were so wonderful and helpful. We truly enjoyed everything about our stay and the food was some of the best food we've ever had. You must stay here!
You stumble out of your room in the morning, straight onto the nicest, private, exclusive, well kept and clean beach, to vegetate all day long on some of the BEST sun-beds EVER (with HUGE beach towels)!! Or you can just sit on your verandah and watch the tides coming in and going out again, no more than 15 meters from your door.....I do not know where to start to thank EACH AND EVERY person we came in touch with at Zazen during our 12 day stay.....from the beach boys, taking such good care of their pride and joy, to the spa ladies, the restaurant staff, the housekeeping ladies, the support staff, the chefs, the driver and reception. If you want to be treated like royalty and be pampered, if you love good food, with a great view, if you love a super professional and beautiful spa and variety of treatments done with great skills, if you want to forget the rat race and hide away in a little tropical paradise gem, seek no further and spoil yourself!! No photos will do justice to the beautifully kept little forest that you can loose yourself in. And so much attention to detail....everywhere you look, you notice something surprising. Just go......!!
