We had dinner for 35 folks at The Strand the night before our son's wedding. Everyone had travelled from various locations in the US (except two from Belfast) for a destination wedding at the Cliffs of Moher. The food was excellent, especially the mussels, scallops and fish & chips. The service was superb, every dinner was delivered correctly, hot and delicious, with perfect portion sizes. The wine glasses never went empty, and everyone enjoyed the evening. We returned two nights later to enjoy another dinner with a beautiful view of the sunset before heading home.
We stayed as a family of 4 for 5 nights. We ate there twice and food and view was great. You should book for food if you want a window view. We did not expect all the luxuries of a hotel as it is a guesthouse and served it's purpose well. Johnny and Caroline were happy to chat and inform and make recommendations. Many of us went for a walk most mornings before breakfast, along the beach up the cliffs and back..Breakfast great, as much tea and toast as you want. Staff friendly!
I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 night stay on 31 July & 1 Aug with a friend. John and his wife Caroline made us feel most welcome. I have to add the weather was glorious which certainly added to the joy of our visit. We dined the first night there and the second night in the Stella Maris around the corner. Both meals were excellent but I think the Strand was marginally better. Being honest the place is a little dated but the stunning views from the window seat in the bay window of out bedroom more than compensated for the decor. The price was very reasonable for high season.
My family and I had the unfortunate experience of dining in this restaurant. We ordered the scampi but found it to be undercooked and chewy and not very enjoyable resulting in us leaving it behind us. We found the staff to be inattentive and while not rude they certainly weren't the friendliest or welcoming. Overall a very disappointing visit and one we will not be repeating.
We had a few evening meals in the Strand Hotel this summer and our favourite is the baked hake with chips and a side dish of red cabbage, carrots and ratatouille. It comes well present and roasting hot. We normally book a table at the window and watch the sunset in Kilkee overlooking the bay. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the owner is most attentive. I highly recommend it and it is our favourite restaurant in Kilkee. The hake dish cost €55 for two with wine for two.
It should have been obvious when our party first entered The Strand that all was not well. We asked for a table for four and despite there being only a few tables occupied, we were asked if we had a reservation. After a few moments of the manager (?) looking around worriedly, presumably to see where she could possibly squeeze us in on any of the vast number of vacant tables, we were assigned a table in the bar area rather than the main restaurant. Granted we were seated at a window table which had a wonderful view of Kilkee beach. The service was terribly slow and the food was quite simply dreadful. The fish was coated in such a thick batter that it required surgical dexterity to remove the fillet from the oily mass that surrounded it. The accompanying chips had the texture akin to rubber. On advising our waitress the meal was dreadful she laughed and walked away. Whilst this restaurant arguable has the best viewpoint in Kilkee, it is definitely a restaurant to be avoided at all costs. If I could award negative stars it would reflect the quality of food we were served.
We stayed in this place for one night only, but had a really wonderful time. The owners were very friendly, the rooms were clean and comfortably furnished. We immediately fell in love with the cozy window bench and the stunning view of the Atlantic ocean that it provided. Rich and very good breakfast (delicious black and white pudding), excellent seafood in the restaurant and literally only a couple of steps away from the beach.
This was a very nice place to stay with an AMAZING view of the ocean. Be sure to ask for a room with a view if available. The room was clean and comfortable and very quiet. The breakfast was good and the host was gracious. Recommend a stay here if you find yourself in Kilkee. Easy access to downtown and the beach area!
Extremely small room, old and antiquated furniture & facilities, the restaurant is stated to be open in ads but it wasn't and the walls are extremely paper thin. The bed was as hard as a rock and hurt our backs. The room was dirty and the town itself presents absolutely no reason to go there. There are no restaurants or bars open after about 6 pm. My suggestion to travelers is to stay in Killarney. We stayed the night before at the Killarney Spa Hotel and it was great. There's plenty of bars, restaurants and shops all around that hotel in Killarney. It is worth the extra 30 mile drive and not put yourself through the misery which Kilkee will put you through.
I visited here recently whilst on a motorbike trip with my mate. This is a great little hotel / restaurant. Definitely family run as i met the owner Jonny, son Andy in the bar, 1 daughter in the restaurant and the other on cook duties. The children are a credit to Jonny, very well mannered and engaging. Food was excellent in seafood restaurant and the room was great with a nice Seaview out of our bedroom. Che Guevara stayed here in fhe 60's and Russel Crowe stayed when at a memorial to Richard Harris. If you a fortunate enough to have a chat with the owner he will happily tell you many stories about Kilkee. This is definitely worth a vusit if you are on the Wild Atlantic Way.
