I was here on my honeymoon having never been to Kauai, and done very little research. HCR was the perfect place for us to relax and rejuvenate. There are no TVs, and no ACs (but the units are designed to take advantage of the sea breeze, and we were never too hot), making it an idyllic and blissfully quiet respite (you can always hear the ocean crashing in). It was the perfect balance of the luxuries we wanted, while still letting us connect to the natural beauty around. You should be aware that it is almost the end of the road, so if you want to do anything on the south shore or even the east shore, you will have 45 minutes - 90 minutes of driving to do each way. But the north shore was our favorite anyways.

We really enjoyed the feel of the resort. The only drawback was that we were expecting direct ocean views from bed and living room (and instead got a building view from the master)in the Premium Ocean View upgraded category that Orbitz posted. We were told on arrival that their (Orbitz) photos are innacurate and that many guests are disappointed when they arrive. That was indeed frustrating since we had pre paid. The staff assured us they would try to upgrade us and would be in touch the next day and we didn't hear back from them at any point. Also disappointing. No air conditioning was an adjustment that we also hadn't been notified of until the week prior when it was too late to cancel or modify the reservation without full penalty. Good trade winds made up for it at night. Overall great location on a gorgeous beach in my new top Destination Location of North Shore Kauai. Would stay in this unit again because we know exactly what to do expect but would not pay the premium pricing.

nice experience, but a bit remote from Hanalei horse back riding, zip lines and other activities available not too far away swimming beaches a bit to far away

A little out of the way and the bar could be better, but the rooms are great and the views are great.

Everyone was super friendly and helpful. This was our second time going.

Our stay at Hanalei Colony Resort was, for the 4th time in 5 years, unmatched. Its location, near the end of the road on the North Shore and right on the water, immersed us in the lush beauty of the island and the power of the sea. The recent renovation of unit I-4 was totally elegant. We chose a premium ocean front unit and loved sitting on the lanai together watching the waves. HCR is a treasured part of our vacation each time we come to Kauai. We will be back.

Loved staying at Hananlei colony resort! The only drawback was that we had, what sounded like elephants staying above us who were constantly Frankenstein walking back and forth starting at about 6am. Then, promptly at 8am, they started their ukulele practice... Luckily by that point, we were off to the beach.

We stayed at this hotel mainly because we didn't want to be in an area with too many tourists. It was close to many of the sight seeing locations that we had planned for our trip. It was a nice, secluded, and quiet hotel. We used the pool and their on-site bbq area quite often. We didn't use their beach area since we wanted to see Hawaii. Overall, we love the hotel.

Exceeded my expectations in every way! Would love to go back.

Want to get away from tourists and get into the quiet beaches, stay at this paridiso home away from home! Open arm welcome to this remote part of the north shore. Loved the kitchens, bbqs, lots of space in each room. Views, staff, everyone and everything is fantastic, full of Aloha spirit! Mahalo! Til our paths cross again.

This hotel and its location gives you a total experience of what Kauai is all about ! The rooms are super spacious and beautiful with a small kitchen. ALL rooms have either a deck or a balcony. The hotel is just on the beach and even our room with partial view of the beach was very enjoyable. The staff is super friendly and there is transportation available for free until 5 pm. The hotel beach is not a good beach for swimming but the hotel offers transportation to wonderful and very close beaches such as Ke-e and Tunnels beach. I will stay here again where I go back to Kauai.

Fantastic room and view, easy to get to Tunnels Beach for snorkeling, the best staff; we had to depart early and were given a prompt refund for the days we did not use, highly recommended for those who want to get away

Kaua'i is raining and windy in the winter, especially in the north, where the Hanalei Colony Resort is located. It is quite remote, and requires a lot of driving to get to the sunny southern part of the island. This is probably not an issue in the summer, but was in the winter. The beds were comfortable, and they provided all the pool and bath towels you want. If that's what's important to you (and having a phone, reliable internet, TV is not), this is your place.

This is a very relaxing, older facility; very clean and comfortable. Workable kitchen. Wifi works great in the room. No phones or tv so perfect if you want to get away. The beach in front is pretty but not swimable- sign warns of dangerous currents. The restaurant nearby does have good views of the beach and ocean, and the food is good, if a bit pricey ($24 for a "gyro" plate- essentially a de-constructed gyro sandwich on a plate. Most other entrees are $33 and up) Still worth it for a pleasant, ocean-front dinner. Good wine list. The pool and public hot tub are clean and nice.

Despite that it looks like a bit of a dive from the outside, we were amazed at how nice the room interiors and amenities were, and at the really outstanding staff. Overall, the location was a little remote. Great if you are headed to the Napali coast, but its a mildly harrowing 10-15 minute drive from Hanalei and the restaurants/supermarket/etc town amenities up the road. That could be a great thing since you have amazing beaches and hiking so close by that are therefor that much more private, but its a bit of a hassle by the same token.

Great Family trip to the ocean. Rooms clean, spacious, and had great views.

Hanalei Colony Resort is fantastic. The setting is incredible, the rooms are very nice, very comfy and very spacious. The close access to the beach was amazing. I would highly recommend it to couples, or families. The resturant was very expensive but the food was great. The little coffee shop located next to the parking lot was wonderful too.

My husband and I Were married labor day weekend 2011 and Hawaii was always my husbands first choice for a honeymoon. We waited til march to come so that we could leave bad weather behind at home and thoroghly enjoy what Kauai had to offer. Although hcr is off the beaten track it's his very fact that gave us the secluded, noninvasive, and unspoiled feel we wanted. It also gave us a great tour of the island as we drove from hcr to the east and south coasts of kauai... Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful drive. The lack of tv was great and the wifi was greatly appreciated. Housekeeping was fantastic and if there was anything extra we needed u guys had it. Having the windows open at night to catch the ocean breeze and having the waves lull us to sleep is a dream come true for mainlanders. I (wife) made good use of the spa and had a relieving 1 1/2 hour massage that was even better then expected cuz of being surrounded by the beauty of Kauai . U have great accessibility to gorgeous beaches and trails on the north side but it's still very easy to get to the rest of the island (landslides and road blocks permitting :-P) couldn't have asked for more!

This small resort offers a place for a family to get to know one another again, no phones, no TV, no internet(oops!-they have wi-fi, if you must). The grounds are immaculate. The pool area is updated and even a serene "wishy-washy hale" (laundry area) that is first rate. If you go with teenagers, they may be a bit surprised to find some of the best snorkeling and surfing beaches among the islands. The condo-like units allow for adults and two kid(max) privacy, kitchen(small), bathroom ample, and outdoor Hawaiian nature at its best. Hope you give it a try. I brought my family here 35 years ago and it is still the place we(grand kids included) like the best of all the islands and place to stay. NORTH SHORE YOU ROCK!

this is the best postioned resort on the iland , on the north side of the and the best side, newely remolded rooms, had a great time, when we go back it will be to this resort . pictures do it no justice,
