I have always stayed at Intercontinental hotels in NY, London, San Francisco, Paris and some other places. The hotels are usually fine, the service very good, the locations usually great. Paris Le Grand and London at Park Lane are fantastic hotels. For quite a long time I used to be enrolled in IC ambassador program, given that I used a lot the hotels, predominantly NY. And sometimes the others. It was with this spirit of mind that I book the InterContinental Sandton at Johannesburg for myself and my family, 3 rooms in total. As Julia Roberts Pretty Women would say, “ big, big mistake”. Indeed, very big. The hotel seems to be something totally “strange”to the IC culture and experience. It can take 30 mns for a very simple and pre-paid check in. Then, I had to do some email work, but it took me 5 calls(!!) to get an internet passcode, when they would leave me waiting in the phone for several minutes with no answer. And to make things worse, I am just coming from the bar where I went with my wife for a drink after dinning out with the family (Sunday, 10:15 pm, jan 7, 2018); I was astonished when the bartender “warned” me that the menu prices in the book were not valid anymore, as they “ had been adjusted”, but were not “printed yet”. After he saw my reaction (after all, I am a Brazilian very used to this type of corrupt practices) he backed off, he and his boss, who seemed to be pretty aware of what he was doing at the bar. I was so angry because it is terrible to be treated as an idiot, stupid tourist. I have to face this sort of “practice” very frequently in Brazil, but not in places of the standard of Intercontinental at S. Paulo, or elsewhere. That is something unthinkable, and made our experience very terrible here at Johannesburg Sandton Intercontinental. In this location, only the concierges and bell captains tried to help, and they were an exception to the rule that prevails here of “serve you if you tip me”. Tumi, a great guest relations person was also a major exception to that rule. At the end, this unit does not remind one of the old and traditional IC culture and values. It seems to be an exception to the group, that should demand a lot of attention from management. Yet, I have tried to talk to the management, Katleen Hedges, who is responsible for guest relations, but unfortunately, I was informed she would not be back until after I checked out. I do live in a country where sometimes values may be quite wrong, and corrupt practices can prevail in some segments (specially politics) as we all can see in the relevant media. But his should not work as an excuse, not to fight to install the correct culture in the businesses we are responsible for. And that is the advise I would give to people in charge of this unit: “Wake up management, fight back as the reputation of your brand is at stake at this location ! D.M.Pinho

Everyone at the Intercontinental Sandton Towers Johannesburg - from the extremely friendly doormen who greet you to the highly attentive concierge staff who meet your every need to the team on 27th floor club-room, waiters, housekeepers and all others - treat you like royalty! We have stayed here many times over several decades and are never disappointed. Our lovely room was equipped with everything we could want. The location is perfect: steps away from Mandela Square, a wonderful shopping mall filled with great restaurants & so much more. Meeting guests in the lobby bar or restaurant is a treat for all. This grand hotel is WHERE you SHOULD stay when in Joburg!
I had to write a review on this hotel especially after the grand hospitality I am always offered. My stay/s are absolutely fabulous. Every time I go included the last two in December I am made to feel so at home. And the suites are absolutely luxurious. A special note to Kaliq and Salmaan you and your team exude excellence and strive to always make my stay a memorable one. Your staff including the waiters on the club floor are the best. Thank you kindly and may you continue to shine 🙏🏼😇 Salisha Maharaj
We stayed at this hotel for one night. Intercontinental Sandton is not a new hotel but still comfortable. Rooms are spacious, sleep quality is very well. There is a direct connection to shopping mall. Outdoor pool is a bit small and cold. Gym is satisfying. Hotel location is very good. It is next to Nelson Mandela square and close to Gautrain Sandton Station.
Stayed twice here in Nov 17 at the start and end of a safari to Pilanesberg NP. Stayed in a club room, well worth paying the supplement. First stay was brilliant, however on the second trip we noticed a remarkable deterioration in service at breakfast in the Atrium restaurant. There were hardly any waiters to be seen, I ended up having to fetch things like butter, cutlery and napkins myself off other tables, and I had to go up to the bar to ask for a second cup of coffee for my wife and I. Staffing problems (25 Nov?) Not what I've encountered at other IC hotels nor what I expect from this brand either. One other minor issue- (club) bedrooms lack sufficient power outlets, all are centred around the desk, it would be good to have some additional sockets by eg the bed, so you can charge up mobile phone.
Stayed for 1 night whislt passing through joburg. It was a really nice stay with a good room. We were upgraded to an executive floor. friendly service and high quality facilities. I will be back next time.
I stayed 3 nights at the Intercontinental in Sandton on a business trip. The service was impeccable. The staff at the concierge counter, the lounge and the reception were all very helpful and professional. I would love to have a chance to return here and spend a few more days in Johannesburg. The only downside is the reasonably small pool, yet it is big enough for a morning swim, and definitely fine for those who just want to take a dip after some sun bathing. I also loved the jogging route map that the concierge counter had - I tried it out on my morning run and it was very helpful in navigating my way around Sandton, and small enough to carry along.
