A little noisy but all else a plus. We went during the Italian fest. Sept. 9 till the 11th so it did get a little crazy.

Perfect location. Easy to walk to many amenities/ attractions. Free Monterey shuttle stop located across the street. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable about Monterey and surrounding area's attractions.

Our room was very nicely furnished in this beautifully renovated old hotel. Next time I would ask for a room away from the stairs or on the top floor because the sound of people talking or using the stairs was very loud in our room. Take the $17 valet parking offer if you plan to use the car a lot. They take your car to a lot one block away where you can self-park at $7 for a day, but with no in-and-out privileges. The location near the tacky Fisherman's Wharf was OK - a nice walk to the Cannery Row area. And the price is right.

Great downtown location, 1 block from the Convention Center! Wonderful staff and breakfast. The hotel is older, which can be charming and unique. It is a bit rundown, but a great value. I would stay here again. It is worth is to upgrade to a room with two beds if are more than 1 person.

I've been to Monterey more than 20 times in my life, but this was my first stay in the Monterey Hotel. The staff was quite pleasant and has a valet attendant available at any hour. It is cheaper to keep your car in the nearby public garage though if most of your trip is spent walking. The staff also made some excellent suggestions for the local night life. And surprisingly, we were upgraded to a suite! Very exciting. The rooms were quite nice and very clean. Here's my warning though to those of you who are ridiculously light sleepers... Since the hotel is over 100 years old and the original building has had limited rennovation- the constant creaks, groans, and poor wall insulation of the building allowed for a miserable sleep. Another cause of the incessant noise is the new addition of a new hotel wing in construction. My husband, who sleeps like the dead, even complained. Bring a sound machine or fan, or prepare to stay in much more expensive hotels around the location. We loved being in the heart of Monterey. There is quite a bit of nightlife and we found a restaurant/bar called Lallapalooza's. If you are in your 30s and appreciate grunge rock, a very tasteful ambiance and great dirty martinis, this is the place for you. Plus, they have late night appetizers. Definitely walk from Fisherman's Wharf to Cannery Row and eat at the Chart House. If you like hiking, plan a day to go to Pt. Lobos, a state park past Carmel. Gorgeous! Make sure to find China Beach. After our hike, we stopped by Ocean Street in Carmel. Make sure to plan your visit to Carmel early since most shops close around 6, even on the weekend.

The location of the hotel was awesome! you literally had to walk out the door and there were tons of restaurants and people right there! The fishermans wharf was just a small walk away and the aquarium was less than a 5 minute drive. We were on the 4th floor of a hotel with no elevator, I am all for exercize but that was a long trek to get up to our room. The room was clean and well maintained but very small and the bed was as hard as a rock as well as the pillows. But all in all the hotel is worth staying at just because of the location

Public parking is a block away. Valet service is available for $17 a day. Bell service to your room is prompt and friendly. Rooms are small but well maintained as is the bathroom. A good selection of cereals, beverages, bagels and toast for the complimentary breakfast. Right in the middle of downtown Monterey. One caveat is the building of an addition to the hotel. Constuction was at a halt during our stay; however if it begins again it could be noisy during the day.

the staff was very friendly and helpful. this is a great location to be in monterey!

Its nice and near the wharf. Staff is friendly and helpful. It is an old hotel but for the price it is worth it. Would stay again

There isn't a better location if you want to experience the real Monterey: historic tours, fantastic and diverse restaurants, charming shops, fisherman's wharf are all outside the door. This hotel made us feel like we were in Europe. Plus they're in the process of adding a new wing with a fitness center and additional amenities.

Great downtown location. Has been around for 100 years but updated through the years. Due to age rooms are somewhat small and tight with old, period furniture but otherwise a nice facility. It's little different experience than staying at the big chain hotel/motels. Rates are very competitive....would stay again.

This is one of Monterey's best kept secrets. I would stay at this hotel again. Very friendly staff and very relaxing atmosphere!

Don't stay here if you want the same bland, characterless chain hotel you always stay at. Also, you shouldn't stay here if you aren't able to walk a few blocks or climb a flight of stairs or two. However, you SHOULD stay here if you want a charming historic hotel in a great area, walking distance to the fisherman's wharf and Cannery Row. It is also directly across the street from a great theater & music venue, and there are several great restaurants, clubs, and coffee shops within a block or two.

The Hotel room we stayed in at the Monterey Hotel was very tiny. There was one small window, which was for ventilation only, as the view looked at the oposing wall of an atrium. We couldn't even see the sky. The bed was quite uncomfortable, making for a very long night with little sleep. The rooms are very clean and the hotel is nice and pretty. There is no elevator, so ask for a ground floor if you aren't up to climbing stairs. To spend one night, it was fine, but if we had had to spend our whole vacation in that room, it would have been very depressing. Also, there were very loud patrons comming and going in the halls most of the night.

The Monterey Hotel was a great value! Only 1 block from hotels twice the price and very clean. The decor is very historic yet of good quality. I would recommend any of my friends to stay there!

The first room we had was small but very nice. It faced a resturante/bar and was to noisy for us with a two year old. The staff immeadiatly moved us to another room which was a lot quieter. The hotels location was great. A two minute walk to the Old Monterey Cafe which we visit on every trip to Monterey. We could have walked to the aquarium but the hotel had reasonably priced valet parking. Would recommend this hotel to couples looking for a weekend away from the kids.

The downtown Monterey Hotel was a great buy for the money. The rooms are very small. Just enough for a bed and nightstand. The bathroom was also very small. However, the location was fantastic. Public parking ($8/day) was a block away.

very romantic hotel for two people to share room. Great location. Wlking distance for everything you need. Would definitely come back.

Nice hotel, but bad service not a whole lot knowedge about parking,
