too far to New York city。 not a good place to visit New York city.

Side door entrance's lock was broken. No breakfast. Bathroom door could not be locked. Bed blocked the air conditioner. Some smell in both the aisle and the room.

I remember the good days back in the sixties when Howard Johnson was one of the major motels with their own restaurants for guests on the road; but these days are over as these HJ hotels are franchises and independently run. These franchises still are run like motels and are desirable for guests who have their own transportation, e.g., theirs or rental cars, and local clients who are familiar in the area. The comfort at staying in this Howard Johnson meets my immediate needs and the IHOP around the corner gave me the nourishment I needed. But it is in a bad area due to the constant traffic around and the staff wasn't very helpful about the local public transportation available for me to get around, e.g., spending time in NYC for a day. A relative constantly had to pick me up and drop me off when I need to attend various events. This hotel does not provide a shuttle service to and from Newark Airport. Otherwise, I recommend this hotel for those guests with their cars and the rates are reasonable; the staff is polite and businesslike.

Left after an hour because it was so terrible. It was dirty. Coffee pot was broken.

bad, did not feel comfortable, room heater/cooler to hot, too cold & nosiy

Didn't appreciate a staff member knocking on my door at 11 to tell me it's check out. I'm fully aware of the check out time. Thought it was rude because he was going around to everyone's room doing the same. Not professional at all.

It was dirty and not an environment that made me comfortable at all. I will never return to this hotel, and I encourage other travelers to book a room at this hotel.

The management was good but the rm was awful, the decor was old and outdated, musty smelling in bathroom to the point of almost called to change rm, but was it was late and i was tired and only staying 1 night.

Dirty has bugs duck tape on the wall covering a hole.

The hotel room was clean, But was an OLD hotel, dirty carpets in hall, room entry door locks broken, but overall was a good one night stay.

The hallways smell is intrusive. Room was wet and unpleasant. Location is convenient if you drive.

HJ: Clifton is convenient to my family in Passaic and I have been there about five times. The rooms we had were recently renovated. They are clean and quiet. There is a peculiar odor in the halls and lobby - like a cheap, flowery perfume. An aerosol deodorizer would be better - to neutralize the musty smell. The windows were grimy on both sides and from our "balcony", the view was a corridor of garbage bags and discarded furniture that looked like a dump and a fire hazard.

The staff was very accommodating, the room was clean. Could have used another chair or two in the room. It was close to shopping, business and restaurants.

The bed was comfy, nice comfortable chairs in the room. Also had a balcony but not much of a view. I did like that they have hbo but was really annoyed the vending machines were not working.

It was suposed to have a pool but...is closed. Need à lot of repair (dors, windows, rooms...) Staff is very nice and heplful.

a good location, close to the city and surroundings

The location of this hotel was great for our goal of shopping for setting up a new college student. Shopping was all close and easy to get to. Room was adequate and secured at all times. Shuttle to Times square was a perfect trip into the city and the cost less than using NJ Transit. Front counter staff ultra friendly and helpful. Lots of options for dining out that are all reasonably priced. Fridge and microwave hard to find in hotels in the area is a big plus. Overall I will most likely use this when I visit again.

They advertised that all the rooms were newly renovated....I think not. I saw water spots in the ceiling, the furniture was salvaged from hurricane Sandy instead if being replaced. So on the bottom of the wood, you saw it peeling from it's structure. Just awful. There is no closet, just a small space to hang things. There is no gym, but the area is nice enough for you to go jogging, provided that the weather is ok. The hotel is centrally located so getting to NY or Newark or any other neighboring area is easy. And for those of you who care, Trader Joe's is in walking distance. The staff was ok, even though I didn't get a warm welcoming feeling from them. All in all, I'd definitely check out another hotel should I need to stay in the area again. I wouldn't recommend this place, spend the extra money, if you have it, and stay someplace else. They aren't the only ones in the area.

OMG - what a dump! Booked this w/o checking reviews on TA - big mistake. Orb would be well advised to remove this hotel from their search results. Sure it's cheap, but you know the saying ! Arrived on the 3rd floor only to be greeted by an industrial size fan in the hallway placed there in a failed attempt to remove the gagging odor of something human gone foul. The hallway rug was soaked and a stained towel mysteriously wedged at the bottom of a doorway. It didn't get better in the room: stains on the 60's retro randomly placed leather couch, stains on both bed's comforters, small black hairs dotted the pillows and the bathtub. Stains on the carpet. "Characters" roaming the hallways and sitting outside. Checked out quicker than I checked in.

I stayed one night for business. room was nice and comfortable. My only issue was the old iron and a stain on the bed spread. Otherwise this stay was great.
