Shangri-La Hotel - Jakarta5.0 out of 5.0

This is my 4th or 5th visit. I was involved in a medical educational event. Shangri-La never fails. Excellent hardware and service from check-in, to the room, buffet breakfast, lobby, conference centre and check-out. Maybe a minor constructive comment : a spell check on the notices can prevent future embarrassment.
This Shangri-La would have been excellent if it hadn't been for the numerous kids running around and screaming in the club lounge. We pay extra to get away from the noise and chaos and did not appreciate this unpleasantness in a place that is meant to be relaxing and professional. I don't mind kids being in there if they are well behaved and quiet, but that was not the case and the staff did not tell the parents to keep their kids under control to ensure the rest of the guests were not disturbed. I don't think it's unreasonable to have a policy in place that ensures kids are kept quiet whilst in a club lounge. This has lost them points in my view. Apart from this issue, the room was great. It was spacious, quiet, clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. It had everything we needed and we didn't have to ask for anything extra. The restaurants (there are several) we ate at were really good. And the service throughout was exceptional - friendly, accommodating and attentive. The business lounge was also really good - quiet and comfortable, although the PC was really slow so I just used my own laptop. I was also able to utilise a meeting room in the club lounge for work calls - this was all arranged without any issues. I only spent a short time by the pool, but it was pleasant and the staff around there were all friendly. The location of the hotel was also good. A short distance to the places we wanted to visit. We mostly took taxis which were inexpensive, but I think you could also also walk. All in all, I would really recommend staying here. But I would urge management to review their club lounge policies to ensure it's a pleasant experience for all guests, including those who wish to relax away from the noise and chaos of a busy city.
Great place to have a venue. The ballroom is big and spaces. Especially for party more than 2000 people. Rooms were clean. We were happy with a great service too. Food at chinese restaurant was also good And the buffet at Sato was amazing.
The service at this hotel is absolutely wonderful! I have to book transfers from hotel to airport for early morning (6:30am) flight. The concierge was the best from reminding me to check in online so I save a little time and can sleep more, then offered morning call, and last offered either breakfast in the room or to go because my room rate included breakfast but the buffet wouldn’t have started yet at 4:30am! This is the first time I have been offered this, and it showed that he cared, not just doing what I asked (booking transport to the airport). Another great thing this staff offered advice on was to book a cab (silverbird) instead of the limo service by the hotel, which would save me money. He also told me if I paid cash to the cab directly it will even be cheaper. This is exceptional service (I hope I don’t get him into trouble with the hotel management!) from the customer point of view. I also experienced wonderful service at the Chinese restaurant Jia in the hotel... though he food was so so ... (I wrote a review on Jia separately). Great service all in all. Above and beyond!
I stayed at Shang 2wks ago for 2 nights. Was actually happy with the room size and amenities. First night and first breakfast was ok. Actually, I love the breakfast, not many hotels in Indonesia actually serve pork and Shang does. Like everyone, we used the bathroom amenities and slippers from day 1. The next day when I went back to the room after office, I found that the housekeeping only made the bed without checking the other parts of the room. 1. My friend left the slipper sleeve in the wardrobe and it was still sitting there. 2. Bathroom amenities: bath soap, shampoo, etc. were not replenished. The next day, I had breakfast alone, since my friends were still sleeping. I was greeted by the restaurant host and guided to a table for 4. I asked for a table of 4, assuming my friends would join me later on. There were 4 chairs, but the table mats were only 2, since there wasnt enough space to put 4 on that small table. After telling the host, I would like an espresso shot, I went to get food directly. When I got to my table, I realized there was only 1 napkin. I waived at a waitress (prettt sure she is not a staff level, her uniform was different) and asked her whether this table was ready since the napkin was only 1. She answered me rudely “well, you can just grab the napkin from other table,” in which she actually did and walked away right after doing so. Through out my breakfast, she walked to my table several time to get my dirty plates but she was giving me this annoyed-look, with no smile at all. Shang, is this how you treat your hotel guests? Is this how a 5* service is? I heard many good things about Shang, but with my own experience, I was truly disappointed with the service.
We just left the hotel after a three day stay for business. We travel often, so we experience a lot of hotels worldwide. This hotel will remain in our hearts and minds as a favorite. Every single interaction with staff was professional, friendly and helpful. They even brought a cake to our room for my husband's birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast buffet with top quality food from around the world. My husband even found his favourite buns from Germany, and they were just as good as the ones his mother makes. The huge outdoor pool is divine and open until 10 at night and the gym is open 24 hours. We didn't use the workout equipment, but we did use the whirlpools and sauna. All were very well maintained and beautifully decorated. I can't say enough about the staff... I left feeling like I had made friends.
I have been several times to this hotel in Jakarta and it never fails. It has a grand architecture reminiscent of the big hotels of the old days. It is finished and decorated up to a standard you rarily find these days, full of Asian and Indonesian art work in particular. Rooms are beautiful. Several great restaurants and lounge bar. Bar downstairs with live rock music is more something for lonely expats than families. But the restaurants, lavish gardens and swimming pool are very good for families with kids on holidays. Great fitness too. Also great for business meetings, conferences, parties and weddings. They also take security very seriously. Staff is well trained and friendly. Top place to stay in Jakarta. .
When we arrived from the airport by Bluebird taxi, we were met by guards and dogs at the front gate. This is a bit off-putting, but doesn't take long to pass through. Guests will have to have their bags run through a sort of airport security type x-ray machine, which seems to be standard practice at hotels & malls. Our room was pretty standard for Shangri-la. Double bed or King room that's fairly roomy with a nice sized bathroom that included a separate shower and bathtub. I love that they include a hair pony as part of their bathroom amenities. The refrigerator is quite small. The pool is nice and has a deep end! The grounds of the properties are nice with a vegetable garden and water playground, though it was being remodeled during our stay. Buffet breakfast was generous with many options including many local options. I would say, know your local prices. Soda water at the hotel is an astronomical 8USD a can but in town, its less than .50 USD. I get markup/profit needs, but that is pretty ridiculous. The staff is helpful and generous though not fussy. I really appreciated being left alone at just the right times but having someone there if I had a question or a need. The hot tub / cold tub / sauna combo was pure heaven. My spouse, having a license in massage therapy and being rather particular, had a massage at the property and was complimentary. It was a relaxing and pleasant stay all around. Oh, and my son wants to add, great Pokemon at the property!
The staff as always are excellent here. They remember the clientele very well. The rooms and big and spacious. I always enjoy my stays here. Room service is excellent. I woukd recommend the horizon levels. A great place to stay.
I had a room with beautiful view of the mosque but the service standards are poor - given the dirty kettle in room. It was truly a “disappointing” experience in a luxury hotel. Breakfast service was busy but the variety was great
