It isn't easy getting there, but it's worth it. Quiet and beautiful, with service that's impeccable. If you're looking to relax in a romantic atmosphere, this is the place. The staff are superb, and they go out of their way to make your visit whatever you would like it to be.
Staff were wonderful. Top notch hotel. Private beach Road to hotel is not paved requiring 4 wheel drive for at least 13 miles. Difficult to leave hotel to explore area. 4 hour drive from Arenal and 4 hour drive to San Jose. Food at hotel very good for Costa Rica.
This is a great hotel for family and couples. There is a gorgeous adults only pool, as well as a family friendly pool by the beach. Gorgeous location and views. The two restaurants are very good, but there is only one other option in the nearby town, unless you want to drive a very far distance. Also, all activities need to be planned through the hotel, because of its remote location. But, if you are looking to relax on a gorgeous beach and take in the views - or, are willing to venture out on your own for a distance- this is the perfect place.
Unfortunately, Hotel Punta Islita is an incredibly remote hotel. Our journey to the hotel was a lengthy one by Grayline Tours which was haphazard and scary. HOWEVER, when we pulled up to the reception, we were met with cool towels and an amazing welcome from our concierge, [...], who was AMAZING and spoke English. Our bags were immediately taken from us to our room and we were informed that we had been upgraded to a casita room from our deluxe. We were pleased with this because the casitas had private pools outback of their rooms vs. the hot tub whirlpools. We were lead into the most magnificent dining area that overlooked the beach and surf and an infinity pool. We were offered a cool drink of our choice and asked if we needed anything to make us comfortable while we checked in and accommodated. We were then personally lead to our room, with drinks in hand and were given a brief tour of the resort amenities and campus.Our room was authentic and amazing. Ceiling fans and air conditioning. Beautiful windows overlooking the ocean and rolling hills. The landscaping was perfectly trimmed and our backyard was impeccable with our personal pool and a comfortable hammock and porch.The week was a paradise of perfect service and amazing attention to detail. Fresh flowers were placed on towels after room service. The mini bar in the room was incredibly reasonable and refilled on a dime. A security safe was installed and all valuables were convenient to access. The bed was comfortable and the linens were crisp and fresh.During our stay we ate at 1492, a gourmet restaurant for our complimentary breakfast each day which included fresh squeezed juices and a choice of 3 dishes: American, authentic Costa Rican and a continental. Also available were other selections for cost. The prices were on the high end, but it was worth the change in breakfast to try other items on the menu. We also had dinners at 1492 the majority of the time. Fresh fish and incredible authentic menu items kept us coming back.The beach bar/pool, Barracho's, was a place where children could swim, as they are not allowed in the 1492 infinity pool. Just as 1492's infinity pool, it was also fitted with a swim up bar and we were served at your lounge chair within the vicinity. The coastal beach area also boasted another restaurant where you could order dinner or lunch until 4pm. Outstanding homemade pizzas and decadent lunches were tested and enjoyed here daily.Our concierge set up an itinerary for us so that we could enjoy the resorts activities. We took in horseback riding through the rain forests and on the beach, Canopy zip lining, a monkey quest tour, Spa treatments at the RIDICULOUSLY delicious spa, golf (9 holes on the campus) and surfing.I cannot say enough the level of service and the attention to the guests. We were fortunate in that it was the low season for guests, and were able to have tours all to ourselves through the local town of islita, canopy zip lining and searching for monkeys.The only suggestion I would mention is for them to have some sort of evening entertainment. We found ourselves in bed by 8-9, as neither bar was open past 9-10. There was no music or entertainment during dinners or at either resaturant bar area.However, we found ourselves to be awake at 6-7am each morning to begin our day and soak in the atmosphere. Therefore, the end to the evening with tv satisfied us.We also annoyed the additional restaurant, just beyond the hotel property called Cambute, which boasted authentic meals, less expensive then the hotel and delicious! A great place for a shot and some tasty goodness.This was perfect for us. I would not suggest for families with children who need to be amused and entertained as there is nothing except the pool and beach for them. Also, do not expect a wild partying night life or cheap all inclusive prices. Be prepared to spend money, but it is worth the exclusivity. Expect amazing service, peace, quiet, beauty and romance. We stayed here for one week in early June. It is an amazing place. We had an extremely private room with an ocean view, hammock, and private jacuzzi. You feel as though you are in your own world with nothing around you; it is amazing. The hotel is basically built on the side of a mountain so all the rooms face the ocean. From our room it was about a 10 minute walk to the beach, but the hotel does provide transportation. The rooms are very nice and the bed comfortable. The staff is excellent especially the concierge [...]. He was helpful in every way possible (helped us when the airline lost our bags, helped with the our broken car, etc.).The hotel has a list of activities that they will provide for you including horseback riding, spa service, surf lessons, etc. We did a Monkey Quest and massages. The spa was terrific and we saw a family of Howler Monkeys on our Monkey Quest. There are some cons to this hotel however...It is truly remote. We rented a 4x4 (a must in Costa Rica) and it takes about 3hrs from Liberia Airport to get there including 40 mins on a very rocky dirt road.Other than the Hotel's provided activities there is not much to do as far as nightlife or any non-hotel sponsored activities (other than lounge at the beach or pool). The closest "big" town is Samara which is about a 40 minute drive.The food is good, but not amazing, and is pricey. Being so remote, there is only one other eating option; a restaurant named Cambute. It is also very good and less pricey than the Hotel.Overall, we absolutely loved our stay here and would definitely recommend it.
The view from the top of the hill where the hotel is located are just beautiful. Best I have seen. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa that came with its own plunge pool (awesome). Food was ok at the hotel restaurant; the only place to eat unless you travel out 30 min...Avoid the barbecue buffet (way too expensive for what you get). Getting there is very tricky, need a 4x4 cause terrain requires it...do an internet search on the trip to the hotel to read more about it...its definitely for the adventurous. The hotel has a total of 2 pools except for the plunge pools in the villas. They're great...especially the one on top. Do your research and you will be fine.

Truly a great resort. It's easy to understand why it's considered in the top 500 small luxury hotels of the world. The staff is incredible - extremely friendly and eager to answer your questions or assist you in any way. The location is picturesque and very remote (know going in that you will need to travel over some very rough dirt roads to get there, but it's well worth it). They offer many excursions. We took advantage of the Monkey Quest and it was worth every penny. Our guide and driver [...] were awesome and got us up close and personal with 3 different families of howler monkeys and numerous tropical birds. The beach is just down the hill from the resort and is beautiful with warm water and a great break if you're into surfing (there is a surf instructor on staff if you want to learn). The only negative I can say about the hotel is the pricing for food. The restaurant is very good, but because they have you in such a remote location I think they're taking advantage by charging the prices that they do. On the flip side, there is a nice little restaurant called Cambute in the little town of Islita which is only a 2 minute drive or 10 minute walk away. Overall this really is a 5 star resort and we left feeling that it was worth splurging to stay there.
My husband and I enjoyed the many activities offered by the hotel. We went on a sunset cruise and absolutely loved it. We also enjoyed visiting the museum and local artist in the village.The monkey quest tour was also a lot of fun.
