This is a hotel that gives you an instant feeling of relaxation – which after all, that’s exactly what one needs on holiday. My wife and I were in a very comfortable room with great views over the Devonshire countryside. The hotel is a clever mix of the modern and the hotel’s Edwardian heritage – it was built as a country house in 1900. Entering the main building you almost step back in time with a beautiful large entrance hall and staircase leading to the first floor balcony. On arrival we were met by the owner who was very accommodating even though we were a little early. Ample Tea and coffee sachets are provided in your room as are welcoming small cakes/biscuits. The room had a huge bathroom, almost the same size as the large bedroom, with a ‘vintage’ full length standing mirror and a contemporary style mirror over the his and her sinks. The sash windows in the bedroom look original as do the wooden shutters either side of the large window sill where one can sit and watch the beautiful sunsets. The bed was very comfortable and modern. Opposite the bed was a dressing table and wardrobe that gave a nod to the history of the house. The room information book is really well written and the owners are more than happy to help with directions to places of interest and how to get there – offering excellent local tips on parking etc. The full English breakfast was brilliant and set us up for a day of visiting the local points of interest. I should also add the service was impeccable! This hotel has a lovely ambiance, really pleasant owners and is a great place to use as a base to discover the beauty of West Dorset and East Devon.
We spent one night at the hotel and wished we could stay for more. The setting is magical, the staff were welcoming and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and clean. We enjoyed both our dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
Wonderful views in a peaceful location. Reception staff welcoming and helpful. Room comfortable, spacious with lovely views. Sadly let down by poor shower with no pressure hopefully rectified swiftly as owner was made aware on our departure. Breakfast was excellent. Overall a pleasant stay.
the staff were wonderful and chris who was on reception and running the bar and restaurant is a real diamond. Our room was comfortable, with a jacquzi bath. The food was excellent. The views are amazing and there is a terrace where you can enjoy a relaxing drink. We will most definately return. The hotel was by far the best one we have stayed in.
We used the Axminster/Hawkschurch area as the hub for our visit to the area, and based ourselves at the Fairwater Head hotel. A really charming B & B in the countryside, narrow hedgerow lines, lush rural countryside around, chirping birds, sheep bleating in the nearby fold...the works! Approach with the suggested postcode was easy by the GPS, parking was ample, checking a breeze, a charming property quaintly restored and expanded from its 1900s bungalow past. The room was adequately large, the ensuite bathrooms sparkling clean, the common areas...cosy yet bright, the range at the bar satisfying...but it was the chef, the chef Tony, who'd bring us back. His food, especially the roast rump of lamb was outstanding! The host Adam, the bustling and cheerful manager Chris, were just two of the team that made this place tick all the right boxes for friendly hospitality. Loved it, would recommend it to anyone visiting the area....and oh! Yes, it is dog-friendly too!
Lovely quiet location, great rooms and friendly staff. Add to this a fabulous restaurant and you have all the ingredients for a superb weekend. That is exactly what we had, Chris and the rest of the team made it feel like a home from home. We will be returning in the future
I'm just back from another weekend at this lovely hotel. I decided to write a nice review because we had such a lovely time, and it looks as if the last Tripadvisor review given was in August 2015 - also from me! Anyhow, we had a lovely time and our now 4 year old had a wonderful time playing hide and seek with us and bouncing on the trampoline. Our dog had a great time too - a real home from home. The food is very nice and there is a lot of communal space so you don't feel confined to your room. We stayed in room 4 which had the most beautiful view. Do come and stay here - it is a lovely place for a relaxing break.
Turning off the B3165 you pass fields of solar panels following in the directions through quiet country lanes to the secluded Fairwater Head Hotel. Hawkchurch with its community shop is about half a mile distant from the hotel. The hotel takes a deposit of the first night’s accommodation when they confirm the booking within seven days of arrival. We received a warm welcome for our four night stay from Chris who was not only on Reception but was also the Restaurant Manager. Our standard room, in the East Wing, was warm and comfortable with panoramic views over the gardens and countryside. Breakfasts are ordered from a comprehensive menu and delivered to your table although on one morning the only continental pastry offered was a croissant! The restaurant is run separately from the hotel and bar, so it is advisable to book places for lunchtime and evening meals well in advance. There are no bar meals. The holiday break was spent visiting, so we only had chance for one evening meal on the first night. The meal was delicious and the steak was perfect, one of the best ever tasted, as was the dessert of home-made sticky toffee pudding. The only gripe is, as with most hotels, that B&B prices are based on demand, so despite staying 4 nights the tariff for Fridays and Saturdays is dearer even though bed linen and bathroom towels do not need changing.
The public areas of this hotel are fantastic. A nice library area and lounge. Breakfast was superb and great owners/staff. A major problem was the low temperature in the bedroom. There was a heater in the wardrobe, but only discovered it on the second evening. The hot water pressure is also a bit low meaning that the shower is a bit weak. These are issues that the owners are aware of and are part of the modernisation plan - as laid out in the information in the bedroom. Another positive point is the stunning view, both from the restaurant and the bedroom we had.
My husband, son and I stayed at this lovely, comfortable hotel in October and were made to feel so welcome for the whole of our stay. Adam, Carrie and Chris were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We had beautiful adjoining rooms in the main house, which were very clean, comfortable and well furnished. Dinner was delicious from the imaginative menu, and the cooked breakfast was perfect too before a well needed walk in the picturesque Devon countryside. (Wished we had brought our dog with us!) Thank you for such a great couple of days - we'll be back!
