Generator Hostel Hamburg2.0 out of 5.0

I have stayed in a couple of Generator hostels before and they all have the same basic rooms and amenities. These are generally pretty small and basic but very clean. The things that make the real difference in these places are the staff and the guys working here are friendly and helpful. The hostel itself is a little bit away from the main attractions but it is walkable to the main nightlife area. This is handy at night as the quieter location makes for a better nights sleep.
This place was amazing value for money! The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfy and the bar and location were very convenient. I would happily stay here again!
Expensive, well located, not friendly, ridiculous small bathroom and toillet, you pay for everything you need extra, no information given about the city or tours and people almost don't look at you. Go to a hotel that you pay almost the same but at least you get what you expect.
This is the second Generator hostel I have stayed in and I will not steer clear of this brand. Thought I should give the brand a second chance after a terrible stay in Paris but never again. Have even cancelled another pre-booked stay. Hostels have no personality and no social atmosphere. Mainly cater for groups of students traveling. When I checked in the room was already full, and someone was in my bed. Staff just shrugged as if it happens all the time and gave me a new room. Both rooms were not clean and all smelt badly. Showers were so small that I could not life my arms enough to be able to wash my hair. Staff act like every question is the hardest thing for them to answer - even if you just ask what time breakfast is served. Common rooms are stale and unfriendly. Bar here had horrible music acts each night, which could have been good if they weren't so loud you couldn't hear yourself think - this is a noise level for a nightclub not a bar at 8pm. Was going to look at getting dinner at the hostel but it was so hard to get information out of any of the staff members I just walked out to the street of restaurants between the hostel and the HBF.
This was my first time staying in a hostel. It cost me about £12 and is run by a German chain. The welcome was great and the staff really knew what they were doing. There were lots of places to chill and I met a few new people whilst there. The beds were great, they included a privacy screen meaning that you could snuggle and shut away. The beds include their own personal charging stations comprised of a USB and regular power port. The rooms included lockers underneath the beds (bring your own padlock, I forgot mine but nothing went missing) the bathroom facilities are in the room also, there's separate toilet and wash rooms in the corner of each room. They can be quite small and creaky, i would suggest using the main shower facilities as your less likely to disturb your fellow travellers. The prices at the hostel are inline with other European hotels in city settings. It can be a little expensive for drinks at the bar, and the vending machines are a little pricey. The hostel is right next to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof which we'll connected to the Hamburg area, the airport and further beyond. It includes both S Bahn and U Bahn and has many shops cafes and restaurants. All the major hop on hop off tours start their journeys from just outside the station. So this hostel is ideally situated for anything your doing in Hamburg.
Great place, vey well located, clean dn big rooms and nice people. We were very surprise about the ggod ambience in Generator. There is a bar where they organize karaeoke and concerts and where you can grab a beer with diferent people.
Fun hostel, good location (very central and easy to find), friendly and helpful staff, very clean rooms and hostel in general and mostly affordable. overall I had a great time! I would come back for sure!
Such a fun place to stay and meet other fun travellers! Very clean, friendly, party atmosphere. Right beside the central station and lots of places to shop and eat right nearby! It was noisy with so many people in the dorms but it's a hostel!
Stayed here as a group of 7 guys in May for 2 nights. Reception staff were really friendly as we checked in late at night, w stayed in 507 which was a mixed dorm. Only negative is that our 7th person was put in another room yet the 2 people who were also booked into the room were not together so i dont know why they couldnt re shuffle the reservations to make things easier. Room was spotless with furniture and bedding looking next to brand new. Not alot of room in the shower to get moving but we managed. Our key also seemed to reset itself if it was near a phone or a wallet which was pretty annoying as we had to get it reset every time we went back to the hotel. The generator is right next to Hauptbahnhof train station with metro station and is also a 12euro taxi to the Reeperbahn. Would stay here again when going back to Hamburg!
Been on Generator for a city break! In the beginning the receptionist give me keys for a room that the door was not working...so i have to go down 2 times to solve the problem! After all we got a tiny , small, basic room on the second floor (224) witch was fine! In the night we went down in the bar and we find out is a mini concert! Great! Except staff from bar was not so friendly and when i ask for a bowl with crisp and peanuts like every other table has send me to front desk! Not a great service! For almost 130€ per night in a hostel i was expecting more. At list from staff!
