Generator Hostel Hamburg

We visited Hamburg for 3 nights before Christmas and wren't bothered about 'luxury' we just want somewhere to sleep so we booked in the private room. The location was incredible, you are right outside the main train station in Hamburg, and within walking distance to the Town hall and shopping centre. So much closer to everything than we first thought. The room was basic and the bathroom is a bit like a train toiler, but it does the job, is clean and honestly the bedding was so comfy! The staff were so lovely and the bar downstairs is great and not rip off prices. We would have drinks both before we would leave in the evenings and a few when we returned before going up to bed and with great choice. I very rarely leave reviews but I loved this place and definitely going to be looking for generator hostels in other cities I visit in the future. It also was my first time ever in a hostel and think the atmosphere and bar made our trip so much better than if we were in the hotel we originally booked before swapping to here.

Visited Hamburg here in December for a short break for xmas markets and stayed here for the duration of the trip. Firstly there was no warm welcome by the staff at the desk. Rather abrupt and unpolite! Staff were mainly young between the ages of 21-35 so would expect a buzz in the air and a feel of freshness but was totally the opposite. When stayed in hostels previously, always nightly activities to be sought e.g. karaoke, beer ping pong, pool, bingo etc However the Generator hostel did not provide any entertainment which was a huge disappointment so was left to seek our own. Bar also closed at midnight !! No atmosphere!! During the night it got extremely humid which was annoying because it was very unsettling. Unable to bring own food and drink into the hostel too which was a shame and have never had a problem with this. Location across street from the train station which is okay if you expect to jump the train to the Reeperbahn or elsewhere. However about a 15 minute brisk walk to the city centre. Overall Hamburg city disappointed us massively. Not much to do as a whole. City centre a lot of shops, shops and wait more shops!!! Hardly no bars or clubs in the area we stayed. Other than the Xmas markets nothing really to do. Once you've seen one market you've seen them all. Will gladly not be returning & advise anyone else to book elsewhere!!!

The hostel is in a great location right next to the central railway station and within easy walking distance of most places. The room was clean and adequate for our needs. It was also very warm which makes a change from most hostels! The hostel has a bar with ping pong which is nice although the drinks are a little more expensive than you normally find in a hostel. There is free wifi everywhere which works well. The staff were friendly and helpful and overall, we had a good stay.

We were pleasantly surprised at this hostel! It is in good distance from the Christmas markets. Very close to the station. All 3 rooms we had for the night were clean. The beds were made with fresh linen, well catered for in every bunk of plug sockets, USB ports, night lamp all in the head board. The bathroom was clean but very small, I am barely 5’2 and I struggled however saying that the water was hot, the shower although small did the job and toilet paper was provided. The staff at the reception were helpful and friendly.

Great location just steps away from the main train station. Rooms are clean, nice and beds are comfortable. Only negative thing is the bathroom. They separate the toilet and the shower which is good, but the shower is incredibly tiny. Imagine airplane toilets.

Brilliant hostel - modern, extremely clean, great reception staff, comfy beds, lockable room storage. Amazing location in the city. Only slight downside is that the room and shower pod was tiny. Would highly recommend this hoatel though.

To start with the positives: the location is very good, just a two minute walk from the main train station, with a bus station being basically behind the hostel. They have a good sized lobby and a cute bar. The bar staff are very friendly and accommodating. Ok cleanliness. Soap and towels provided in the private rooms, not in the dorms though. The negatives would be far worse: the ensuite showers are claustrophobic, to the point when it is better to use the shared bathrooms to be able to shower like a human. The double bed is two beds pushed together, and if you want to spread across them, you will find yourself on the floor as they separate just when you breathe the opposite direction. Seriously the easiest fix. They have a ban on eating or drinking in the rooms, so the security (super rude) guy will make you throw away your food when you enter. I understand they want to get you to eat in their bar, but that one only opens at 5 pm. No sort of an attempt of giving you a map or explaining you a bit about the city. A smile is free as well, they should remember that. You need to pay upon arrival only, again, no flexibility, maybe you wanna change your money first? While paying for the towels might seem ok, (a bit overpriced but still ok), they even make you pay for the luggage storage. PER HOUR! The absolute biggest pain was the wifi, which was just not functional most of the time. Overall, just disappointed, but it is not like you have much to choose from in Hamburg.

I've been to other Generator Hostels and this one is better because of how close it is to Hamburg Central Station. The rooms are larger than other hostels. However, the attitude of staff can be very poor. Upon checkin, I had a friendly greeting by the staff, so not all the staff is poor. I couldn't sleep at 4AM and went to the lounge area to work on my computer. It connected to the bar which was open, lights are on, TV was on. Their upstairs lounge is poorly lit so I sat in bar area where light was better. I got a glass of water from the tap. The staff came in, turned off the TV, told me I can't be here, I can't drink the water, and I can't go back upstairs from the bar. OK, I understand the area is closed but do you have to kick me out like I ruined the place? I was alone and no one else was around, I was causing no harm. It made me feel very uncomfortable like I am not allowed to be anywhere. I sat on the floor outside my room working on my computer. There isn't another hotel/hostel at this price at this location but be prepared for the staff! Thumbs down for attitude. I got his name: Rostan. Avoid him at all costs especially if you are foreigner. It's a hostel, everyone is a foreigner. Learn to treat your guests better. I later on talked to the other staff and they told me he was from a contracting company they use so that's a relief to hear this is not typical treatment of this hostel. I would still be cautious. It was my first time in Germany and he gave me such a strong impression; it was not a good one.

Stayed here with a group of friends at the beggining of december. We booked a private room and found it to be clean and plenty big enough, with two bunk beds and a small private bathroom. Very close to the main station (hauptbahnhof) and 5 minute walk to tne shopping streets. The key cards to get in the building and to the bottom corridor didnt work very well but the staff were always there to let you in and were very friendly! Theres a free walking tour guide that meets at half ten i think every day whic was fab too. All in all a gret place to stay for a reasonable place for our short trip to Hamburg.

After my stay to Generator Hostel Berlin Mitte, I took the train, arrived to Hamburg Hauptbahnof, walked 2 minutes and got to another Generator. This was really fantastic, the fact is beside the station just crossed the street. I had to stay 3 days You can't miss it! is that one, bricks made with Generator logo on the top of it. Once again I had a reservation for a 4-bed room: this time I remained alone in the room as no guests were assigned to mine. Really interesting the pocket bathroom; looked like a aircraft toilet, very functional! Room was indeed comfortable and cleaned. The same in Berlin, the Same here in Hamburg: All the staff willing and so kind; always ready to give you advises. The position of the hostel is great: Even though the hostel is located beside the main station it is not as noisy as I expected, very calm indeed. Along the presence of the station, there were the subway station that could bring to wherever you desire in the city. Third time in a Generator Hostel, third time that I remained really satisfied. Looks like I should become the Testimonial of Generator Hostel :)
