The location of The Scent - slightly off the beaten track of Bangrak on Samui - offers a unique opportunity to really relax. The slow down the clock! I will get back to that! The hotel is a small boutique hotel centered around a pool. Some facing the pool, a few facing the ocean. The rooms are nicely decorated and offer what you need when relaxing and enjoying Samui. It has a cool twist to it. Something really worth enjoying. Staff are nice and very helpful. The beach is good and you can go kayaking in one of the kayaks that the hotel has. No noisy jetskis to disturb the peace. Most important it offers a beautiful view. One tiny, but maybe not so tiny issue. The hotel allows children which is fine, but when several families travelling together descend upon the hotel and their kids are in the pool all day - they take up a lot of space - mentally and physically. This minimizes the space for relaxation - because everthing is centered around the pool. I have stayed here before and I will stay here again. However it has happend both times. This should be addressed!
The rooms are amazing. The bathroom is just so beautiful. I actually expected the hotel to be much bigger and nicer as it looks from the pictures on internet. I would only advise this hotel to stay one or two nights if you need to be near Samui airport as the location is not really good. You have to walk quite a lot to get a supermarket or atm service and the beach in front is not nice. The prices of the restaurant are a bit higher than restaurants in Koh Phangan but nothing to say about the food quality. Breakfast also nice even if it is not a breakfast buffet. Nothing to say about the staff, people really nice and helpful!
TL;DR: avoid the scent at all costs! On the website the rooms and hotel look beautiful. I believe that the rooms were beautiful. However, this is no longer the case; the rooms have not been kept very well and very much show their age. We stayed in a beach front room and my friends and family stayed in sea breeze rooms. Each room I saw was in dire need of restoration. Also, the rooms all seem to be full of bugs. My sister's room had a cockroach in the bathroom. And my wife, I, and most of our friends and family were feasted on by mosquitoes in the night. During our stay, there was broken glass left for almost a whole day (until I complained about it) where glasses had fallen off a table due to a windy day. We ordered breakfast to our room one morning, what a mistake! Parts of the breakfast we requested multiple times by phone never made it to our room. Furthermore, the breakfast was not taken away even when our room was "cleaned". This brought a colony of ants to our room. The rooms come with complimentary water which is left in a certain wooden container. And every so often, staff come to the room to deliver complimentary items such as chocolate cakes. This seems nice, but it turned out to play a nasty trick on us. Part the way through our stay, two bottles of wine arrived in our room in the same wooden container as the complimentary water, placed prominently on the top of the table in front of the TV. We deduced that these bottles must also be complimentary. (We took the wedding package so we thought this might be some nice gesture from the hotel.) On finally checking out of this crooked hotel, we received our final shock. A hefty charge for the two bottles of wine that we naively believed to be complimentary. We explained the situation to the manager, Vicky, but we were dealt with coldly. Vicky's suggestion was that we should stay at a five star hotel next time. This response was like a slap in the face!
My favourite boutique hotel in Koh Samui. Beautiful rooms, styled with an old world charm, making your stay so comfortable you won't want to leave. Delicious menu for lunch and breakfast was sensational. I loved everything about this hotel and would highly recommend it.
This is my first time staying at small-hideaway boutique hotel. At very first arrival, i felt unsure if it's a good choice but later I realized this was worth-coming. I got real touch of horizontal beach front, friendly service of all staff and warmness like a home through all stay. Le Charoen restaurant is also terrific. I had dinner there too and even re-order! Super tasty!!! Shouldn't missed this hotel.
If you are looking to be transported to a different time and a different world, this is the perfect place. Only a few places in the world leave me with such a feeling of grace, nostalgia and soul. Upon entering this "secret world" you are welcomed in a boutique vintage French Indochine style reception. The overall aesthetics left no detail unattended including the linen staff uniforms, the dimly lit rooms that give you a sense of old world candle lit/oil burner lamp rooms, the unhurried yet very personal and sincere pace of the service, the taste of the food offered in the restaurant, the sepia toned rooms and Interiors, and lastly "the scent" that leaves a nice nostalgic touch. Every small little detail in this resort will surely make you feel like you are truly in a different time and place. Everything about this place is sublime, poignant and quite poetic. While it is true that the water is not the best on the island, the ever changing local scenery on the beach from morning to afternoon is amazing and enough to entertain your senses. I enjoy watching the beautiful hills of the other island disappear and appear from the horizon, the local fisherman on his boat, the beautiful sandbar from a distance while having coffee by the waterfront restaurant, the changing silver gray and blue hues of the water as flat as glass. Ahhh it's truly a special place. Whatever the "beach" lacks the beautiful pool will make up for it. The Scent Hotel is for the special and classy type of traveller who enjoys true serenity and relaxation. If you want a good swimming beach go to rambunctious Chaweng with loud music blasting everywhere with touts and peddlers, plenty of Jet skis and beach action. Hands down, this is one of my most favorite places in the whole world and will recommend it to anyone.
Brilliant hotel. The staff were outstanding, couldn't do enough to help us when one member of the party needed a trip to the hospital. Food was excellent. Only downside was the lack of alcohol in the cocktails...fairly expensive drinks and food. But all in all a great place to relax!
Beautiful boutique property, indulgently appointed and well looked after. The staff were wonderful, the French-style atmosphere seemed effortless and the French restaurant provided delicious Thai and Western options. Great view too! It is a bit remote from some of the main areas of Samui such as Chaweng but if you want to relax in peaceful quietness, the location works in your favour. Most your will pick you up from the hotel anyway!
Small boutique hotel, amazing rooms, amazing food, amazing service. Because the hotel is so small you are treated on a personal level and everything over our 4 day stay was perfect. We arrived and had a small hiccup with our room due to a photoshoot at the hotel, however this was sorted and the hotel provided complimentary massages and hotel transfers. The restaurant food was 10/10 alongside the service. The location is wonderful amazing beach and beautiful walks along the beach. My only negative on the hotel is there amount charged to use their taxi service, was very expensive compared to the local taxi's but no dramas! I had dinner on the beach and is one of the best meals and services I've experienced and am probably ever likely to experience. I would recommend this hotel to anyone! Thank you for an amazing stay!
I booked a stay through Secret Retreats for my boyfriend and I for a romantic night in Koh Samui. While they offer lovely properties throughout this looked by far my favorite and we were not disappointed. The whole building seems to tell a story of a time gone by while not lacking any amenities you may wish for. The service is incredibly friendly and most of the staffs speaks exceptionally good English, making communication a breeze especially when sorting out ferry tickets for us. I was a bit disappointed by the beach - while the views are lovely, this is definitely not a swimming beach, the water being quite murky and shallow. However, the pool is lovely and actually refreshing. Food is great, though a bit overpriced, and breakfast deserves its own little gold star for being really yum and innovative. All and all, the perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway. The one thing I wish that the owners would continue to have a special scent for candles or such (the only scented candles at reception were for decoration) as it would be such a lovely souvenir from the Scent Hotel!
