We have just returned from 3 nights at Buchanan Arms. We have been going to this hotel for over 25 years. We hadn't been in a while as I had been overseas, therefore we booked a weekend for our anniversary at the hotel. The hotel has a new Manager Thomas who was outstanding. Always smiling, greeting guests at reception and genuinely interested in how our stay was going. Nothing was too much trouble. He has already made a fantastic impact and has lots more planned ahead. You could see his passion for providing first class customer service while providing support and leadership to his team. We checked in originally for 2 nights and wanted to extend another night. Initially there was no rooms available however Thomas worked magic and after returning from our walk he advised that a room had become available. The room was beautiful. The area surrounding the hotel is lovely, the autumn colours were stunning. Across from the hotel is a path with a short walk that takes you to amazing views of the area and you can see Loch Lomond. A short drive takes you to the Loch, also Balmaha and Balloch. The village of Drymen is only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. The rooms we stayed in were modern and clean. It is worth noting that the building dates back to 1763, therefore you will have little things that are not perfect, there are cracks and creaks, however the hotel is offering great value for money and that should be remembered when leaving your feedback. That said I am positive that if you have any query during your stay raise it with the staff or the Manager and they will go the extra mile to try and sort it for you. The staff in the restaurant and bar were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. You really helped make our weekend. We had a dinner, bed & breakfast deal. I recommend the smoked duck starter, it was yum!! Also the steak, chicken and salmon were wonderful. A bottle of house wine was included in our deal, I had the white and enjoyed it. It was dry and chilled. Red and rose were also available. We went to the leisure facilities, best temperature of pool I have been in-not freezing, a pleasure to use. I even got in after being in the jacuzzi which was lovely and hot. If you are looking for a relaxing break then I recommend this hotel. Thomas and the team are working hard to make this great hotel an awesome one!! We had an amazing time-thanks so much.

This hotel should be so much better. It's location is perfect for The Trossachs and Loch Lomond and is within easy reach of Glasgow. We arrived at 6pm to an empty reception. We could hear a person in the back room on a personal call and our coughs, taps and calls were ignored. When the call ended and the person came to "welcome" us the best that I can say is that they didn't throw the room cards at us. The room matched the welcome, cold, dark and faded. The bathroom door would not shut unless it was bolted and the bit of carpet that sits under that door was not vacuumed throughout my stay. There was a body wash and a shampoo on the bath when I arrived. Foolishly I used them, they were not replaced. I did not realise that I was only allowed one and would have been more frugal had I known. On a similar note, I had a hot chocolate on the first night and, despite a request, never got another. I did wonder why we had afternoon tea provided on our try. Most places give breakfast, but dare to be different the Buchanan Arms. We had booked dinner but told by our friendly receptionist that we would have to wait until 8pm as other guests earlier spots. When we did go in there were only ten other guests in there including a party of six so cannot see why we had to wait until then. The menu is unimaginative although there are supposed to be daily specials. I write supposed to be as on two of the four nights there were no specials, on one night no soup available (there were eleven guests in that night) and on two nights no risotto. The temptation to suggest a visit to the local shop to buy Arborio rice was resisted. May I suggest that a member of the waiting staff walking around with a thick scarf round their neck does not look good. We experience drink orders being forgotten and long waits for our food. Heaven help any guests if the restaurant gets busy. A new manager started whilst we were staying. We noticed the difference in attitude by the staff but he has an uphill struggle to get the necessary change. The hotel needs money spending on decorating and staff who care about their job and their guests. I really hope that this happens. I will return next year to find out if it has.

The hotel was really good with an olde world type of feeling about it. The staff all looked after us from reception right through to checking out. Nadia and all the staff are so nice, as is the food. We were walking part of the West highland Way and it was such a good base right in the heart of Drymen. We were given room 37 that was great. Will be back. Thanks

I booked an overnight stay in a triple room for my birthday for me and my 2 friends. I'd been before and LOVED it so couldn't wait to go back. A deal came up on a website where we could have an overnight stay with breakfast, £20 towards dinner and a bottle of wine on arrival for £34.50 each. Sounded amazing so I booked right away. However.... On arrival, the receptionist couldn't find us a room. She told us to sit and wait in the lounge. She finally directed us to room 31. The first thing we noticed in the room corridor was the awful smell....we opened room door and it was one king size bed! NOT what I booked! I went back down to reception , complained about the smell and another girl said it was disinfectant. It was NOT disinfectant...more like rotten eggs! Receptionist started going through rooms where people hadn't arrived yet! I was finally given the key to room 39 which I was told was a family room and the best in the hotel. The room was lovely but we had to get 2 single beds put in. We went to book dinner and could only get 8.30 as hotel was so busy. I feel I should have been advised to book dinner in advance. Anyway, we went down but were shown into the breakfast area as dining room was apparently full...we saw empty tables. Atmosphere in breakfast room was not as nice. We got our starters at 9pm but waited til nearer 10 for our mains. My friend ordered a garlic butter sauce which she poured all over her (dried up) butterfly chicken. However it was awful...like someone had melted butter in a microwave and poured garlic salt over. She therefore had to re-order and waited til 10.30! We therefore finished at 10.50 by which time it was too late to go outside for music entertainment in a local pub. It was my birthday celebration so I wasn't happy about this at all. Next morning after breakfast (scrambled eggs were grey and people were complaining about dirty crockery), we tried to get back into our room for our bags to check out, but the keycard wouldn't work! I went to reception to find a long queue of people with the same problem...the receptionist said it was probably because the clocks had gone back! What??!! Also, we asked for a brandy glass in the bar the previous night...they didn't have any. We asked for Irish coffee and were told they'd no cream!!! Absolute shambles! We also heard that some people had been sent to another hotel cos of overbooking. This is an absolute disgrace! I am so disappointed that the standards in this hotel have dropped so much. I had been telling everyone how good it was before I went. Now however, I am certainly NOT extolling its virtues!

I recently had a four night stay in this hotel. Whilst a few of the staff attempted to be helpful others were very unhelpful. The staffing levels were inadequate and many of the staff seemed disaffected. My room was adequate although the general maintenance was poor with mould on some of the windows and peeling paint. The bathroom was satisfactory and there was plenty of hot water. Initially the television didn't work and when I reported it I was advised that there had been a problem with all the TVs in the hotel for the last few days. Someone came and fixed it but I wondered why they hadn't taken the trouble to resolve it earlier if they knew about it. The cleaning in the room was generally poor. There was a terrible smell in the corridor outside my room and when I reported this I was told there was a leaking drain which they unable to fix. The wait to get a drink at the bar was unacceptable as there did not appear to be any dedicated bar staff. The service in the restaurant was terrible and even having booked a table for 5 at 8 pm we were eventually given a table for 4 one hour later. One evening 4 residents appeared for dinner at 8.45 pm but were turned away as the kitchen had closed despite the fact it was advertised that dinner was served until 9 pm. The standard of the food was variable and on some occasions the choices were very limited.

Recently stayed at the hotel for my 50th birthday; we had a great time, the staff were friendly and helpful, rooms were good size and clean, the Salmon Leap restaurant was fantastic and the lounge area very relaxing. We definitely look forward to another stay at the hotel.

Booked this hotel for my brothers wedding. My brother and his new wife also along with serval other family members, friends and bridal party. Prior to arrival serval of us had called to ask about early check in, in order to get dressed and ready for wedding. We had been told to call back as they where unsure of what rooms they would have available. We called the day before and they where still unable to help or tell us if we could check in early or even have access to a temporary room to get changed. On arrival to the hotel another wedding guest was trying to check in early in order to get ready for wedding. The receptionist was very unprofessional and unhelpful with her tone. She told the guest he could get changed in the gents toilets. Furthermore the receptionist assured us she would pass on the information to the night receptionist that all of us where at the wedding and would be late check ins. Arriving at the hotel after wedding night receptionist said at handover we had been marked as ‘ no shows’ and hadn’t been passed on any information about us being at a wedding. Thankfully they hadn’t given our rooms away which could of happened. The staff where very unhelpful or professional. The receptionist we spoke to in the morning was unwilling to pass on the complaint to the manager. Which has resulted in my brother sending an email. There where several unhappy customers with the service of hotel complaining in the morning some wedding guests and some not. They definitely need to train their staff on basic manners and customer service. Very poor service.

Had booked this hotel via .myhotelbreak.com for myself and my husband, and when we arrived were told they had no booking for us and that .myhotelbreak.com must have forgotten to send confirmation but they we see what they could do, they then handed us a key and said they would have to get room ready, fair enough we thought however we sat watching others check in and go directly to rooms for over an hour it was at this time we noticed others sitting with cases like ourselves only to find out they were in the exact same position no room booked and they had been there for over 2 hours 'waiting for a room to be cleaned'. By then alarm bells were ringing so I phoned .myhotelbreak.com and spoke to Holly directly who sent me the confirmation email and phoned hotel for them to say' oh we do have the booking.' certainly not what we or any other couple where told. Anyway after over an hour sitting my husband asked 'will room be ready soon' for reception to say 'yes they are ready' What! so no one could tell us or anyone else this. We preceded down to basement level (they put us all there) and no amount of bleach or air fresheners could cover the smell of dampness. Returning to the reception I asked to be moved.... they did show us another room which had leather pealed of chairs rickety windows and no way to hold the two single together because catch was broken (we booked a double) As I went back to inform husband of my worries... my worries were increased by the queue of people at reception complaining.... no hot water, broken light fitments... TV not working... no heating (they offered one couple a blow heater). It was like a scene from Fawlty Towers.... Stayed here a year ago and certainly was not like this..... How could this fall in standards occur in one year? We decided at this point there was no way we were staying here, and Holly at .myhotelbreak.com arranged another hotel nearby and a world of difference... would we stay here again.. short answer is No.

Prior to arriving at hotel, I tried to book a table in the restaurant for dinner and it took a few days - had a problem getting through but eventually did on 3rd day! On arrival, we were greeted well and facilities etc were explained to us. On our way to our room we could see that the hotel was needing some decor and maintenance as the fire door was sticking and there were bits of decor not looking great! In our room the curtains were hanging off the rail and ;eft a big gap, I managed to use a hair clip to keep them together and hold the bits up onto the pelmet. There were various bits of decor issues in the room too but the bathroom was the best feature as it had been recently decorated and had a blind that closed! The only issue was the shower went hot and cold all the time. Dinner and breakfast was nice, however the staff clearly hadn't had any proper waitress training and one in particular, seemed to be really stressed but the restaurant only had 5 tables of people. I didn't use the leisure facilities so I couldn't comment on those. A little bit of customer service training, maintenance and some proper management should sort these issues out as it wasn't a bad hotel, just needing some improvements.

Two nights of a wonderful stay.. I read other reviews RE midgies on curtains.. Your in Scotland..it's the local bug! Room was lovely I think on booking though you'll have to specify double bed as we had a twin. However had butterfly chicken for dinner yummy! Tottie scones bit tough though at breakfast but well organised staff. Even the cleaners in the wee pink tunics bent over backwards for us. There was a wedding on and we were warned about noise but dj didn't show so couldn't comment on noise we would've joined in anyway. Barman is a character. Made everyone smile. Plenty of shampoo etc in toilet amazing view of back of hotel room 12. Our room wasn't ready till 2 so if you are booking in I would check to see what time it will be ready for you. We just went to the bar and had lunch soup n sandwich lovely. Pool amazing it was very quiet so we made most of steam room and jacuzzi. Towels are provided and gym looks well equipped. Will Def be back here to stay. Lovely hotel and lovely quaint wee village
