The hotel still retains the charms of the early 20th century but has been beautifully renovated. Quiet understated care and courtesy. Our room was small but nicely appointed as was the bathroom. There are pleasant commercial n areas. The breakfast was generous with a lot of options. Twice we ate there in the event and the food and service were good. There are some nice walks right from the hotel.
This hotel has all the old world charm that you want from a Swiss ski holiday but has all the mod cons you need to make it a relaxing stay. We stayed here for a skiiing holiday in January. The rooms are spacious and well equipped. The bathroom I had would benefit from some updating but there was plenty of hot water and it was clean as was the room. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff could not be more helpful. The food is very well cooked and plenty of it in the large restaurant. Every night there was live music of good quality. The location is perfectly located for accessing the lake and other natural Beauty spots. For skiing there is a shuttle bus that operates during the morning and from late afternoon but other buses can bring you back at these times. So whilst not ski /ski out it is no hassle to get the bus from the hotel. There is a spa which caters for the real sauna/ steam room experience and a small pool for relaxing those aching muscles after a long day skiing or walking. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.
A hotel with nice rooms and good food but it is the staff that are the reals stars. From that perspective, this was one of my best experiences ever. Very service minded in all aspects. I would especially like to mention Sämi and Lorenz that helped (me and) my son - who had an allergic reaction during one night - to a downtown doctor for treatment. Thank you once again! / O Liljewall
We have just returned from a week's skiing package, and had great weather which made for a wonderful stay. Flims is truly super as a resort and holiday destination and the Waldhaus end of town is a delight. Peaceful, quiet, near fairytale pine forests. On the plus side we thought the hotel was relaxing to stay in and good value for Swiss prices. Our pine clad room at top of hotel had very comfortable beds and extra space for a child's bed. Windows were tiny as it was a roof room, but quietness made up for lack of view. It was very clean. Yes, the bathroom fittings are a bit tired, but by the end of our stay we had realised the Sunstar hotel chain is eco friendly and maybe that's why they kept these things. Is it truly necessary to throw out tonnes of landfill with beige coloured baths and sinks, when they are still fine, and clean? Not really. There are other designer hotels, if that's your thing. This hotel is over a hundred years old and if anything, it made me sad that the spectacular Art Deco lobby area that they had photos of on the wall has already been replaced with pine ceilings and modern sofas. Please note that there isn't much of a kids play area in this lounge, just a few toys for toddlers at the edge. Service was generally friendly and overall good but was weak in some areas. The hotel is in my view a three to four star, not solid four star on the level of some other Swiss hotels I have visited. The pool area is too small, sadly, but as we were skiing we didn't miss it too much. The hotel is one of a chain, and that shows in some ways. This is maybe why it costs less to stay there. You see this for example in food quality, as food is sometimes mass produced. It's OK but not brilliant. The salad bar is quite limited. Breakfast not bad but oven baked croissants like those from a tin, no thanks! There is no waiter or waitress service for morning coffee, it is all self serve which makes the experience feel more like a two to three star. Another example... they have cake in the afternoon, but it looked mass catered or bought in, and there wasn't enough, often run out by half past four when many skiers only just returning. ALso there was not free coffee and tea to go with it. No one could say if it had nuts in, so my son couldn't try it. In these ways it feels the hotel is cutting corners, and it does detract from the overall experience. But having said this, as a place to stay for ski or active break it works. In some ways I feel you get what you pay for, so the above didn't make us feel we had chosen badly, just that we chose an affordable option with GBP vs CHF being so low now. The essentials were all there. If you want solid four or five star service in Flims you surely need to pay the extra and go to Adula, Grand Hotel Waldhaus etc. I noticed some British travellers were at Sunstar with the luxury company Powder Byrne, but this hotel is definitely not in the luxury bracket, I don't think it claims to be. We were so glad we had not booked with PB as we would have paid much much more! The staff try hard but need more training or oversight from supervising staff. My husband has a gluten free diet which is medically essential. I'm not sure we can fully recommend the hotel for those with allergies because although staff seemed to understand, then for example they presented soup with croutons at least twice after GF was ordered. They didn't always seem to know what was, or wasn't OK for coeliacs on menu. On the last day they only had one GF roll for my husbands breakfast. So this shows some lack of care. All this said, it's a nice enough hotel but you maybe would not enjoy it if you like hotels to be perfectly organised and more formal. This hotel, above all, is relaxed, and that is a plus. We felt comfortable. For kindness and friendliness all staff were lovely and I would especially like to commend the drivers Max and Lenny. Again though, not perfect because a larger minibus would be useful for transfer from the ski lifts, as often we had a long wait and sometimes it was not clear who had waited longest (there was 'queue jumping'). But with a few small improvements this hotel could be excellent as it has a good space and apart from the Grand Hotel Waldhaus, probably the best location in Flims. All things considered it's still a great choice in Flims, we thank the staff for a lovely stay, and I think we would go back. But we hope it continues to improve because it has great potential to be the best all-round and affordable hotel in Flims (and maybe it already is that?).
Very nice and clean accommodation! The room was homely ,with free minibar and beautiful view. The breakfast was amazing, we're really surprised. Specially thx to Mrs. Monika for lovely fried eggs. Everybody we're very gentle and helpful ,thanks! Nice to see you again!
We stayed at the hotel for four nights just after Christmas. We had varying experiences: for example, some of the staff were very helpful (e.g. Lenny), efficient (e.g. Max) and friendly (e.g. Tina). However, others were surly and had a very jobs worth attitude; the request for tap water was met with derision. Food was generally good; however, the fondue was very basic (although this may have been to do with our package). The cake 'party' must have been a joke: we arrived back from skiing around 4.30 each day and no cakes were left! It would not have cost a lot to leave a pot of tea or coffee out, and perhaps another tray of cakes. Rooms and housekeeping was very good, although bring your own conditioner and soap!
This hotel is rated with 4 stars but it is not very satisfying. The service in the dining room was rather slow and shower gel has not been refilled for 3 days till I left. Unfortunately there are only single rooms with single beds available.
My husband and I stayed at the Sunstar this summer and it was just right. We were on vacation in this beautiful town, and had lots of plans to explore the area by mountain bike. Flims is so bike friendly, in fact, that the tourist office lists hotels with special biking amenities, such as bike storage, tools, and hoses. The Sunstar is one of these hotels. The desk staff were very knowledgable about the trails and directions and things we simply could not miss. The location is set a bit away from the main part of town, up a large hill. It couldn't be much closer, however to the Caumasee, a crystal clear mountain lake set so high up they have an elevator to reach it (you can also use trails). The hotel is low-key, and pays tribute to the nature around it by blending in seamlessly without being garish or obtrusive. The Sunstar is convenient to this, as well as hiking and riding trails. It is immaculately clean, warm and homey. The rooms have balconies, knotty pine furnishings, and sumptuous fluffy duvets. Bathrooms modern and immaculate. The morning breakfast is fresh and good, and commensurate with the pricing of the hotel. The restaurant is clean and serviceable. We have some special dietary needs, so we wound up enjoying the bar area more than the restaurant. However, the daily menu was posted every day, and the dishes being offered seemed great for those without special needs. The staff clearly take pride in their hotel and what they do. Parking is fine, some nights we drove to neighboring Laax for dinner, other nights, we could enjoy a walk to the center of Flims and visit some of the spectacular local places there. Perhaps the memories I cherish most, were the times we made a grocery run, and nibbled on salad, cheeses and wine on our balcony, with the stunning mountains as a backdrop. The pool is nothing to write home about, but with Caumasee in the backyard, who needs a pool anyway? I feel that the Sunstar favors an active outdoorsy client like myself, however, there were many many guests there who were clearly there to enjoy the mountain scenery in a quieter way. It could work for any traveler.
The hotel is located in a beautiful location, very close to the Caumasee. The hotel is clean, service was good. What I liked the most was the bar lounge and restaurant, it is cosy and beautiful. Welllness area is small but beautiful. Breakfast was nice.
Incredible stay at this gem of an Alpine Hotel. Staff is wonderfully accommodating. The nearby lake is crystal clear and stunningly beautiful. There are endless spectacular hikes into the wilderness. Make sure you go on the Wasser Weg hike and check out the magnificent view from the viewing platform, Il Spir Conn. Flims has the best drinking water I have ever tasted!
