We stayed for one night when we were visiting family. Had a lovely room that looked newly decorated and very trendy with coat hangers on the wall instead of a wardrobe. The largest TV in a hotel room we have ever seen and a good shower. There was a seating area as well and all looked very clean and modern. Breakfast was good too - buffet style with plenty of choice. Good location within walking distance to the railway station and main square in Gavle. Only disappointment was that there was no bottled water in the room and we had to pay a premium to purchase some at the reception. After staying at the airport Best Weston Hotel we did expect at least water in the room but this did not spoil an excellent overnight stay.
Had a single room with shared shower and toilets. Bed was not too comfortable but adequate. Nice food in restaurant downstairs at reasonable price and very good buffet breakfast. Parking available in parking house just down the street.
From the first call and all the way to check out, everyone on staff has been amazingly sweet. They don't only provide the services you ask for more than willingly, but they also go the extra lengths and make sure that their guests are having a good time. Breakfast had pretty much everything one can ask for accept baked beans. A really nice detail was a juice press so one can make fresh pressed orange juice. Our room was pretty small but had everything one might need. Bring your own conditioner though, because the only thing available in the shower was a combined hair- and body wash. Comfortable beds, but not the thickest blankets. Bring a warm Pyjamas or ask for an extra blanket.
In trying to get a balance between price and convenience it sometimes doesn't work and this was one of those times. The hotel is on the opposite side of the town centre, which was much bigger than we expected so it proved to be a longer walk than expecteded from the station. If you arrive by train and are staying here get a taxi! On our arrival we had to push through a crowd of smokers in the doorway....as it had started to rain many of them nothing to do with the hotel. The room was adequate if a bit "bijou" and space was at a premium. The hotel was quieter than expected gioven it was on a busy road frontage. It is convenient for the local amenities and restaurants. The breakfast was excellent and we ate in the hotel restaurant on the first night as it was tipping it down outside....simple good quality food with good value.
A very centrally located hotel where I parked in Gallerian Nian just across the street so access was just a short distance away. The room is as usual at Best Western, clean and tidy, but nothing special. A bit cold though but there was a freeze outside so that might have been the reason. The bed was very good and I slept like on clouds. The breakfast is as usual in Swedish hotels, very well stocked with what one need to get going in the morning.
Everything is just fine as one would expect from a Best Western hotel. The staff is pleasant, the room is clean and nice. The only minus is that the breakfast is not of that Best Western standard, I lacked some kind of salmon, and the choice of fruits was rather poor.
This was a last minute lay over. Thankful for availablility after traveling for more than 24 hours. Reception staff was kind, friendly and helpful. Price was a little high for what the size. The room was compact, clean, fresh and updated. The beds were very comfortable. The breakfast was very good; food was fresh, plenty variety and well stocked.
You get what you pay for. This hotel has a superb location but very small rooms. If you have two large suitcases you will have space problems. For one night its location and the price is very good. Breakfast was rich and fresh. Can be recommended for a short stay in Gävle. Reception area is somewhat dull
I found Hotel City by chance when the reception of the hotel I'd pre-booked was closed when I arrived at 20.30. Locals directed me to it with the insouciance that suggests this is a regular occurrence. Once I saw it was a Best Western I felt comfortable because I used to stay frequently in that organisation's hotels at one time. They found me a room even though there was a dance convention in town and most hotels were booked up. (They didn't do the same with a young guy who had a rucksack, later). I had to stay in a pension style room in an annex on the first night, which meant a shared bathroom but no big deal. Actually the room was okay, comfortable though quite small; and deathly quiet. Dance convention or not there didn't seem to be any other occupants of that wing. And it was pretty cheap. For the second and third nights I moved into a room with ensuite facilities and the price went up considerably though it was the same size as the other one. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom looks like one you'd expect to find in a prison, quite stark, though it does the job. There is the usual tray of coffee/tea and a kettle and there's a nice big TV on the wall but otherwise there is a strange absence of facilities. For example there is no telephone in the room. I've never seen that before. If you're on business you can forget a trouser press as well. Breakfast is pretty good value I think, self service with a good choice of cereals, juices, cold meats, bacon and egg etc, in a large pleasant room downstairs that also has a mezzanine, level with the street. It opens at 0600 in the week and 0730 at weekends. They serve full meals and bar snacks in the bar until about 9pm, usually with a 'special' each night. I got the impression that the bar, which is right next to reception, is a popular meeting place for locals but that's no problem, Gavle seems to be quite a quiet and sophisticated place and there weren't any drunks, least ways not while I was there. If you go out at night the door is locked at around 23:00 (earlier on Sunday) so remember to take your key card, which lets you in, otherwise you're on the 'phone to them to let you in (there is a night receptionist, locked behind a safety shutter) or you're on the street for the night. There is free wifi throughout the hotel but I didn't have a device. I had to use a computer though and there is a guest one in a public area. I thought you might have to pay but you don't. It got a lot of usage with no questions asked. The location is pretty good on Nygatan, which is one of the main streets and close to the main square with plenty of shopping near by. Its also very close to a large and pleasant park. Not good for buses however, they don't seem to run nearby. And the railway station is about 10 minutes walk away if you don't take a taxi. I wasn't in a car but apparently it costs about GB£10 a day to park in a multi story across the road on top of a shopping mall. This hotel's USP is its staff. Right from my arrival when they sorted a room out they were great. I was partly there to visit some people I'd known for years online but had never met, partly to watch a rock concert (its a very musical town) and partly to do some business. Without a phone or laptop I had to ask for a lot of favours, including 15 minutes on the hotel's own mobile urgently calling a friend. Every request (and there were many) was met with a smile and responded to immediately. I didn't get every staffer's name, but thanks to Sara in particular. That's all folks.
The room was appropriate and good business hotel standard. Clean and functional but not extraordinary. The breakfast was basic swedish standard, a plus is that you can make your own fresh orange juice.
