Sun, sea, swimming and sports in Fort Lauderdale Beach

Located in South Florida's Broward County, Fort Lauderdale is an East Coast hot spot for boaters, beach enthusiasts and nature lovers. Canals, bridges and marinas connect and intersect all around the city, offering shades of beautiful blue water no matter where you are. Along the clean coastline runs a promenade speckled with cafes, shops and restaurants, for when you're taking time out on beach days.

Things to see and do
Beaches

It's no surprise that the Fort Lauderdale area has a wide variety of beaches and water-based fun, with Fort Lauderdale Beach boasting seven miles of white sand along its Atlantic Ocean location. For people-watching and nightlife, nearby Miami Beach is the place to be. Hollywood Beach has been named among the best beaches for families by Fodor's, with its stretch of sand featuring a wide area for walking, jogging and bicycling. There is even a spot for your canine friends on Dog Beach.

If you want to be charmed by an old-fashioned beach village, head over to the small town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.For a secluded beach experience, try Dania Beach. A nearby coral reef system is easy to swim out to from many of the beaches, so you can go on snorkeling and diving adventures.

Parks and attractions

Located along the Intracoastal Waterway and A1A, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is filled with turtles, marsh rabbits, waterfowl and many other types of animals. Visitors can go bicycling, swimming, fishing and camping. The park has canoe rental and walking trails.

The International Swimming Hall of Fame is home to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, a world-class facility with competition pools and a diving well. The facility is used in national and international competitions and has been the scene for the setting of 10 world records, including one set by Olympian Michael Phelps in 2002. The center also has a theater, research library, and museum with historic items and aquatic memorabilia.

Sports

Sun Life Stadium in Miami is home to the Miami Dolphins football team. It hosts college football's Orange Bowl and has seen several Super Bowls. The stadium has also held soccer matches, RV and boat shows, monster truck shows, WrestleMania and concerts such as Madonna, U2, The Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake.

Special events
South Beach Food and Wine Festival

Set in Miami, the Food Network's South Beach Food and Wine Festival heats up the beach in February. This four-day event features more than 50 different activities like wine tastings, food and wine pairing classes and some of the best entertainment on the beach. In attendance for presentations and other special events are Food Network stars and celebrity chefs such as Rachael Ray, Giada De Laurentiis, Robert Irvine and Andrew Zimmern.

Rock the Ocean Tortuga Music Festival

The Tortuga Music Festival is presented by Rock the Ocean, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness about ocean conservation and supporting scientific research and education through benefit concerts, partnerships and entertainment events. The soft sand of Fort Lauderdale Beach is the site for this multi-stage country, rock and reggae music festival in April. In addition to nationally-known music artists, the festival features a variety of interactive and educational exhibits, touch tanks, cooking demonstrations and the latest ocean technology.

Best time to stay

Fort Lauderdale's location in South Florida ensures a tropical climate. Winter temperatures rarely fall below the 60-degree mark, and summer temperatures average 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. These warm temperatures combined with sunny skies make Fort Lauderdale a year-round destination for everything from sunbathing and surfing, to golfing, spectator sports and nature excursions.

Travel Information

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is easily accessible and close to lodging and activities. High-rise hotels, condos, beachfront resorts and family-friendly retreats can all be found along the sunny shores, and these Fort Lauderdale Beach hotels are near Hollywood, Miami and Pompano Beach.
