Hotel Columbus4.0 out of 5.0

Bedroom: Our room resembled the North Pole and to make matters 110% worse, there was no hot water! The bed resembled the floor. The toilet cistern fell apart when flushing. The bedroom carpets kept stealing my shoes (sticky). Breakfast: I strongly advise you not to waste your valuable vacation time going to breakfast. The extremely rude and unwelcoming staff greeted us with fierce stairs from the tired faces. The food is of a standard that wouldn’t be fed to zoo animals. Hard bread - stale cornflakes - smelly milk - yellow jam & green cheese. This was the contents of the ‘buffet breakfast’ All in all, this (prison) is of the absolute lowest standard you could ever imagine. Enter at your own risk!
The hotel is dated, dirty and very noisy. It is right next to an extremely busy dual carriageway, with no let up even at night. It was impossible to get any sleep and were still awake at 4am. Staff were very unhelpful and could not care less. All our rooms 3 in total were a disgrace, carpets so dirty you stuck to them, toilets all leaked, furniture throughout belonged on the tip and the breakfast was not worth eating. We were being watched by staff at breakfast, made us feel uncomfortable, really bad unwelcoming atmosphere. We left a day early as were told we could not be moved to quieter back rooms and could not face another night with the unbearable road noise.
Personnel was friendly and kind. Window view was good. It takes about 15 mins to get to the historical centre of Florence. Wi-fi signal was weak. Hotel was very old and the interior needs some refreshment. The room was really dirty - with fingerprints all over the walls. The AC wasn't that good and it was pretty hot in our room. Breakfast was really simple - just enough to get through to lunch.
Very basic, no facilities, the whole place is neglected!! Balcony is not big enough to both stand on never mind sit out! Bathroom needs updating, bedroom carpets dirty (keep socks on) & walls grubby n paper thin!! (can hear next door conversations) Breakfast ok if u only want a drink n bread/crossaint, however dining room neglected too n not a nice place to sit!! I know its cheap, we usually not that fussy as out exploring the city all day however certainly not a 4 star as advertised & the walk to the city centre is too far, more than the 20 mins advertised!! Only thing positive about this hotel is the reception staff & the doorway out!! Please read others reviews before booking as most are accurate & i would not recommend hotel to anyone else!!
Very dated and needs modernising. Not sure it ever came out the 70s but if your looking for a very basic no thrill or comfort place to just sleep and move on then this is it. If you want anything else then dont stay here as id class it as 2 star max.
Positives: Very clean, can't fault the room cleaners and helpful staff. Croissants and juice at breakfast also very tasty. Negatives: Half hour walk from the centre, although we didn't use it there is a bus. It's on the side of the river but also the side of a very busy road and the hotel was clearly made without sound proofing. The bathroom, plenty of soap and shower gel and towels provided but to use them was a mission. The overhead hook for the shower was broken, but one low down as OK. No bro plum we thought just have a bath wrong again the plug was a plug hole cover that didn't sit flush with the bath so the water slowly went. We had to fill up the bath so much then sit in the water and use the shower. The shutters still let some light in also little flashy annoying lights on the aircon unit and fire alarm. Aircon unti didn't work Only one plug socket Advertised minibar=empty fridge. The bar was closed. The bed, well, our double comprised of two single mattresses put on a dodgy metal framed bed that looks like a spare bed in homes. So whenever one of us moved so did the mattresses and guaranteed on of limbs would end up in the gap - not comfortable. That's all from the top of my head! Basically cheap for a reason but didn't dampen our spirits as Florence is beautiful.
As soon as we walked into the room it was obviously not a 4 star accommodation as promised. Before we’d even unpacked I went to ask for a different room as this one was wholly inadequate. I was told there were no others available (a blatant lie) so I then asked if I could get a refund and move on, I was then informed it would take 28 days for me to get a refund,(I’m not even sure this is legal). We had little choice but to stay and try to make the most of it. There was no shower curtain which meant we had to either use the tub or squat in the bath with the shower, when I informed the desk I was simply shrugged at. Fridge didn’t work no tea/coffee making facilities, balcony measured .9 m x 1.2 m (4’ x3’) meaning we couldn’t even look out together as there was also the air on unit mounted in the middle.Breakfast- don’t even get me started. All this coupled with the tough attitude made this by far and away the worst Hotel I’ve had the misfortune to stay at.To claim 4 stars is nothing short of ludicrous.
Friendly staff on arrival, room clean and basic - plus side there was free wifi even in the room. No tea/coffee making facilities and the bar wasn't open when we was there. There was a vending machine for snacks and drinks. Terrible breakfast: choice of 1 cereal, croissants and ham and cheese. Not an ideal location, an hours walk from the centre.
The room was nice and clean. At night it was a little bit noisy, because of the traffic. Staff was very nice, they helped us with the parking because there was no free parking space around the hotel. Hotel is situated near the Florence city center, which is easily reachable by foot. The breakfast was good. Just as information city tax which is 4,5€ per person must be payed by cash.
This hotel is located on the north bank of the river Arno, the most identifiable axis running through the city. It's impossible for even the most addle-brained to get lost and, if you're not up for the half-hour walk into the centre of town, there's a regular and reliable bus service (the number 14) with a stop just round the corner. Incidentally, there's also a cheap Co-op supermarket near the bus and a tobacconist for us nicotine addicts. My partner and I booked the Columbus pretty much at random, based on its reasonable prices, and were delighted to discover that it's just ten minutes' walk from the Obi'Hall gardens -- where we had planned to attend a festival. The hotel itself has a 1930s art deco flavour, not to everyone's taste but we loved it. There's something refreshing about it's dark mahogony décor and the fact that they still use actual keys rather than the homogenised, globalised electronic card. Our room was very comfortable, with its balcony providing a view over the surrounding houses and nearby foothills. We had to hunt for the fridge, though. It was cunningly disguised as a small cupboard! The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The only thing preventing us from giving the Columbus an 'excellent' rating is the disappointing breakfast. The buffet consisted -- in the tradition of mainland Europe -- of croissants, ham, cheese, yogurt and cereal. Beyond this, there were none of the frills (fruit, eggs, sausages...) that international visitors tend to expect. And we weren't happy with the somewhat patronising placard on each table telling us not to remove any food from the premises.Tear those up, Mr Manager! Overall, though, our five-night stay at the Columbus was a very pleasant experience.
