Stayed two nights and very much the highlight of our trip to New Zealand. The experience was reminiscent of lodges we have stayed at in Africa and South America. Laid back luxury with every creature comfort on tap and relaxed but attentive service. Combine all of this with fabulous views and great food and Fiordland Lodge just gets it right. Thoroughly and highly recommended - well worth the premium rates!
We stayed here two nights, in a ground floor room (4). It was booked via our UK travel agent. The wooden lodge is purposed built in 2002 and consists of 10 rooms and 2 log cabins. It is set in a lovely location with great views, just north of Te Anau. All rooms were full when we stayed. The room was very nice and clean with an opening external door into the grounds. Andy, the manager greeted us on arrival and helped with the luggage. We were away from the main area and we thought it would be nice and quiet! That was until the woman in the adjoining room entered (5) and coughed for most of time she was there during our two night stay. The sound proofing between the intercommunicating door was virtually non existent and we heard every cough and virtually all their conversations, word for word, as well as snoring! On opening our door, on our side, we found a slab of lightweight polystyrene wedged in between the two doors. Unfortunately it was not heavy enough to deaden any sound and noise is obviously a known issue. We heard no noise from the room the other side (3). There appeared to be an inter connecting door between the other ground floor rooms of 1 & 2, as well, but there appeared to be none upstairs. The doors possibly aren’t used much and perhaps need to be removed? We have stayed in a number of wooden lodges in National Parks in the US and Canada and this was certainly the worst case that we have had, with adjoining noise. Interestingly other reviewers have made comment about this. We did make comment to Andy about it on checking out. Hence the reason we don't give it an excellent rating. That said, this lodge is set in a lovely location and the staff go out of their way to help and are all very friendly. The views from the lodge are superb and we had some lovely sunsets. We were on half board rate, so ate the evening meal in the restaurant. There is a complimentary first drink in the lounge together with and canapés. The food in the restaurant was very good but for our second night the service was slower, as there were 4 additional people in library on the 1st floor level, so consequently staff were having to go up to the 1st floor level as well as the restaurant. Breakfasts were very good. Free Wi fi was generally good, if not many people were using it. But then it slowed when they were! A few more outside chairs, for each room may have been useful, as other guests seemed to grabbing the few available outside the ground floor rooms and moving them around. The bed was very comfortable. There is a complimentary minibar with soft drinks and beer. There was a fair bit of helicopter activity from the helipad fairly close to the lodge and don’t be surprised to see a helicopter land on the lawn immediately by the lodge, returning guests from their excursions!
Fiordland Lodge is the perfect location from which to explore Fiordland. Guest rooms and the Lodge common areas have beautiful sweeping views of Lake Te Anau and the surrounding countryside. Meals were excellent! What really sets this place apart is the amazing level of service they provide. We had several special requests and they accommodated all of them with cheerful smiles. Just a few very minor caveats: noise insulation between rooms could be improved, room lighting was a little dim, and we would have loved to have a screen on the door so that we could have circulating outdoor air without bugs. But all in all, this was one of our favorite hotels EVER.
Fiordland Lodge was the second to last place that we stayed at during a 21 day vacation in New Zealand and it was superb. The lodge sits in spectacular setting looking out over a large lake with beautiful mountains on the other side and all of the rooms face this view. The lodge itself is beautifully constructed and reminds one of some of the grand old lodges found in a number of national parks in the United States. The gourmet food is fabulous, the staff working at the lodge are outgoing and eager to take care of your every need and the rooms are luxurious. Best of all, the lodge is located right next door to Fiordland National Park which means that numerous day hikes are available within an hours drive from the lodge. We took some of the best pictures from our entire trip at Fiordland Lodge and would definitely go back to this South Island gem again.
Exceptionally well done in every way. The lodge was magnificent, the food was delicious, the view was stupendous and the staff could not have been more gracious. This really is a 5 star experience. Plus you have Milford Sound right around the corner.
Stayed here for three nights during a 4-night stay in Te Anau. Stayed in an upper floor lodge room. The lodge itself occupies a stunning location a few miles outside of town. The unobstructed views over the Lake Te Anau and the mountains do not cease to amaze and inspire. The large open gathering area (with adjoining bar and dining room) is set with comfortable seating, a large fireplace and commanding views. Our room was outstanding, with large windows, luxury bedding and a stocked mini-bar. The stay included breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was somewhat more casual and included a variety of offerings that were adjusted as needed by our appetites of the day. The dinner menu, never repeated during our stay, was inventive, delicious and served by younger diverse group who worked so hard to provide a good experience. But what really made the stay worth it was the staff. The manager, Andy, and his team (Laura in particular) have managed to create and maintain an sense of luxury, service and attention to detail that is also unpretentious, casual and welcoming. I wish I could have spent one full day just relaxing - reading by the fire, sipping hot chocolate and admiring the views. Kudos to whomever is responsible for training of the team and modeling a such a delightful, relaxing culture that infused the entire lodge. As an aside - if you are out and about during the day, don't hesitate to ask for a takeaway lunch. They are filling, tasty and packed just right for the day to maximize your time in such a lovely location with so much to do!
After being on a raft trip and camping, then ending up having to sleep on the bus ride (2am) to Wellington, catching a plane before the cyclone hit, and having to drive all over to find a place to stay near Queenstown, we said, "heck with it, let's stay somewhere nice" and we did. Wow. From the moment I walked in the doors, I was in relaxing luxury. we had an amazing comfortable room with an amazing view. Dinner and breakfast were provided and both were amazing! Top notch meals, well prepared, high end ingredients, excellent service. Relax in the gorgeous great room by the fire and look out on the water, or sink into your comfortable bed with soft pillows. Needless to say, I slept so well and did not want to get out of bed, it was so comfortable. Manager was great helping us find a Fiordlands cruise and other activities. This is the place if you want amazing relaxing luxury, and incredible food. Well worth it!
We stayed at Fiordland Lodge for three nights in February 2018 while on a guided fishing trip in NZ. An excellent Lodge and one we would highly recommend. Very good food indeed (my wife is a chef) and a great wine list. The staff were really friendly, helpful and good. The chalet we stayed in had a great view looking out towards lake Anau. If you are going there I can only believe you will have a fantastic stay - enjoy!
Options are limited if you choose to visit this area .. not sure you really need to The lodge itself is impressive in decor and architecture.. but the rooms are disappointing. The food and service are inconsistent.. the staff are nice and trying hard to do a good job Summarizing I would say something is not quite right .. and for the money .. probably not
We stayed here in a log cabin for 3 nights. It’s really hard to convey just how beautiful the setting is and how amazingly chilled the place is. Our cabin was totally secluded and so peaceful. In the rate you get breakfast and dinner. We were a bit unsure about the dinner bit as we usually don’t eat in hotels etc. We decided to give it a whirl and we’re glad we did - the food is amazing. A lovely touch is every night aperitifs are served with nibbles and you can sit outside by the lake enjoying both. We absolutely loved it - one of our favourite places of all time. If you stay one place in New Zealand stay here!
