The Anchorage Motel was excellent for what we required. The unit has everything you need for a short or longer stay- very comfortable bed, additional heating available for winter, kitchenette and own BBQ if you wanted to eat in, sky-tv and DVDs available to borrow, full bathroom amenities and great shower. The main reason we stayed was a base for going to local attactions- milford sounds, glowworm caves. The motel is a short, flat walk away from all stopping points and many nearby cafes/restaurants/shops/the lake. Only downside was a lack of storage in the bathroom- however it was more than made up for with plenty of storage in the main room. The owners were great at recommending where to go and more than happy to offer advice.
Filthy stained carpeting, stained bedding, all kinds of hair found throughout room. This establishment (as do many motels on the South Island) leaves the windows open in the unit prior to arrival. I can only assume to “air” it out, which can leave you with a room full of flies or in this case moths.... So dirty, we laid the bathroom towels in the floor in order to navigate the room without feeling to grossed out. Te Anau is a very underwhelming, almost run down little town. There is absolutely no reason to go there other than as a stopover for Milford Sound. In the future I would suggest taking the airplane ride or hiring a coach for the drive. We would have been more comfortable doing the extra drive to Queenstown than staying in Te Anau. NZ tourism industry is just pushing this one!
Stayed at the Anchorage Motel although some of the reveiws were a little mixed, as we wanted an overnight room before a three day trek on the Hollyford Trail. The room was large and clean and kitchen very good and I feel some of the reviews are a little harsh. It isn't 5 star and neither are the prices it's a motel and does that job very well.
The Anchorage Motel provided excellent accommodations for a good price in a convenient location. We stayed at a one bedroom apartment. It was clean, spacious, with a well-appointed kitchenette and a private yard with a bbq grill. The bathroom was clean, with lots of hot water with good pressure and fine eco-friendly toiletries. The motel was within walking distance to town and the lake/marina. The reception staff was kind, courteous and willing to help.
Interesting, most of the hotels on the street start with an "a" this one included. We were here for three nights as a base of operations to visit both the Milford and Doubtful sounds. Room was clean. You park right in front of your door, partly roofed so dry. Good wifi. We had our travel agent book this place and had a unit with a kitchen, as we could then go to the food store and prepare it at the room.
I'm sorry to have to give this place one star, but it utterly failed at the most basic point of a hotel room - to give someone a place to get a decent night's sleep. We made this booking on the fly because the weather had turned bad and we weren't able to do the backpacking trip we had planned. We didn't have lofty expectations of this place, but I figured at least we'd be more comfortable than spending two nights in the rain in our tent. Upon checking in, we were pleased by the DVD's available to borrow (since it was going to be pouring down rain) and the living room was plenty spacious. When we got in bed though, I was met with a very strong chemical fragrance in all of the bedding. And I mean VERY STRONG. I often smell chemical odors a bit more than most people, but this was overwhelming. I couldn't sleep on my side because that put my face on the sheet, but I hoped that at least I could get some sleep on my back. That also proved impossible, as the chemicals filled the air around me and gave me a headache and made me feel nauseous. Sometime in the wee hours of the morning I gave up and moved to the living room and slept in my sleeping bag. Once reception opened, I told management about the problem and asked for the bedding to be washed without whatever laundry soap they were using. He didn't seem overly concerned and actually denied that their laundry detergent had any fragrance, but he did agree to send someone to wash it. I gave the housekeepers everything from the bed and asked them to wash it twice. I don't know if they did, but it smelled just as terrible when they brought it back. I had to put it all in a closet to keep it from polluting the rest of the apartment. We put our sleeping bags on the bed and slept in those for the second night. Management did not ask us how our stay was as we checked out. I understand that most people don't know that the fragrances in most commercial products (air fresheners, soaps, candles, laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc) are toxic, but they are. I would have given this place another star or two if the management had shown some concern over one of their guests feeling physically ill from their room. Although I am somewhat more sensitive than others, I've never had any problem in a hotel room before, so whatever they are using to do their laundry is especially bad. If you have any sensitivity to chemicals, or just care about your health, pick another hotel.
Very small accommodation, with extremely small bathroom and inadequate shelving In fact no where to put a toothbrush let alone a toilet bag. Plug in air freshener was overkill So strong we had to turn it off. Lighting was so weak it was difficult to see and therefore not safe! Definitely inferior accommodation Not recommended. Management not impressed with my comments. Price over the top for level of accommodation provided.
The room smelled of mildew and the management was not at all apologetic. Neighbors were loud and we could not shut the windows because of the mildew smell. Went to ask manager for a fan and the office was closed at 8:30 pm. If the whole town had not been booked up we would have left in a heartbeat. Don’t go here!
After 3 weeks of vacation, this was the most wonderful place we stayed. Rooms were so homey, had a kitchen which was great. Staff were super friendly, and it was so relaxing and clean. Although the rooms didn’t overlook the lake, they were only a couple minute walk to get there. Loved it, thank you for taking care of us.
We used this as a base to explore Fiordland and it didn't disappoint. Spacious apartment which was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend. Easy walking distance to both the lake and the town centre.
