The Essex, Vermont’s Culinary Resort & Spa

The hotel has great eye appeal on the approach. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms vary greatly in size, with some of the corner rooms being extremely spacious and comfortable. Cleaning crew needs some refresher work. Beds and towels were changed, but sink didn't get cleaned, coffee not refilled, dirty cups and glasses didn't get picked up or replaced. Restaurants served up very tasty fare, but group events with catered lunches and snacks were more than disappointing in quantity, variety and choice. I wouldn't hold a group event here that required any form of catering--Halloween candy bars and beef jerky served on break; another day, potato chips and cookie bars. No juice at breakfast. For a hotel that calls itself a "culinary resort," I had much higher expectations.

We had a very good experience staying at the Essex. Our room was cozy and comfortable, and the culinary focus allowed for some unique experiences. We took a cooking class, which was fun and delicious. We also took advantage of the sister resort, Topnotch in Stowe, for tennis and added amenities. My husband liked the lap pool and hot tub as well, and the location was great for numerous hikes and day trips. We would stay there again!

I've stayed here many times. The staff is lovely and well-trained. The restaurant food, prepared by culinary students, is very good. The property has a lovely pool, hammocks, a spa, gardens, and places to meander. It is close to shopping. I like being out in the country. In the past, we enjoyed making smores over the fire pit but I had no time to explore anything this time. The culinary classes look great and some day I will take one. My room was lovely and I wish my business trip would have allowed me to stay longer!

Enjoyed a second visit to the Essex en route to camp, and enjoyed it just as much as the first visit. Need more than one day to enjoy all the facilities.

Lovely hotel in the mountains of Vermont. Stayed here with my daughter when dropping her at camp and it was the perfect last night experience.

I arrived at this quaint little resort which really reminded me of what I think a B & B would look and feel like. The driver was wonderful. He filled me in on the town and shared his personal experiences about the spa services which were very nice...Kate was great. The walk around the grounds was nice and pleasant...absolutely loved the hammocks on the property! The inside pool was large and great for lap swimming. The rooms could use a makeover (a little dated). The food was terrible at the Tavern! I just couldn't understand the lack of preparation or taste of the food. My whisky burger lacked flavor and tasted burnt. The bun was hard and crunchy. I wasn't familiar with the restaurant so I reluctant to send the food back. The second night, I decided to go with something as simple as nachos. This was also a mistakevery little cheese. I sent the food back this time. The food was just AWFUL!!! The staff was the best ever! Very accommodating and professional. I would go back for the serenity and quality of staff personnel.

I have stayed her many times. The staff is always pleasant and friendly. The food is always good. We had a lovely bonfire with s'mores on the property on Saturday night, which we greatly enjoyed. The property is beautiful. There are a few signs of wear and tear including a rather noisy HVAC system and a couple of worn towels. But I love it, love the free parking, the location. We love the bright room colors and the in-room gas fireplace. We did not use the pools or the spa this time but have previously enjoyed them. The hammocks provide a lovely place to read a good book.

This was an awesome stay with great amenities and service

We only stayed a night. It is a culinary school and so the food was excellent. Would be nice if they had more gluten free options

My husband and I went for a romantic weekend getaway and it was beautiful there. Loved the outdoor hot tub.

The rooms in the main lodge were nothing special. Hallways definitely looking worn. Didn't see the two newer buildings. Perhaps they are more upscale. Stayed at this location particularly for the much bally-hooed food. Except for the trio dessert, the delivery fell short of the promise of the descriptions. Would not return at this price.

We utilized the spa and fitness center, which was great. We also had excellent meals both breakfast and dinner. Will be going back.
