At first, everything seemed ok. Room clean and staff helpful although they initially told us that they had no booking for us, they quickly sorted it out. Tried to make a coffee in the room but the milk curdled, got replacements but it happened again so had to go out and buy our own milk. The bed was dreadful, every time my husband moved, I was almost thrown out of bed because it moved so much....it was like being in a dingy in rough sea! Hardly got any sleep and ended up with a sore back. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. The evening meal was also good but vey expensive. Second night was cold so we put the heater on which was so noisy that you couldn't hear the TV.....but at least it drowned out the noise from other guests shouting in the corridor. No sleep again that night and our backs really were complaining in the morning so we decided to leave a day earlier than planned. Explained to the person on reception but he didn't seem surprised or bothered. Would not go back or recommend
The hotel is located on the main A12 road just north of the historic town of Colchester and accessed from the southbound carriageway. It is very standard in its design and the rooms are comfortable and well furnished. The food offering is very reasonable and the included breakfast good. The location is excellent and the staff very helpful.
I stayed here for one night for work business in Colchester. The hotel is well-situated just off the A12 with plenty of free parking on-site. The staff were polite and efficient, particularly the lady that was working behind the bar that evening. The hotel is well-kept, clean and a lot more modern and sleek compared to other hotel chains with much nicer decor. The room was good value too with breakfast included, as well as the offer of complimentary toiletries if you forgot any of your own. The restaurant food is good quality too. Overall a great stay and would definitely recommend.
The Holiday Inn Express Colchester was clean with modern rooms and good service. We ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and both were satisfactory. Breakfast included a few hot items which I hadn’t expected. I would return to this hotel.
One of the nicer units I've stopped in, lovely size room and a comfy bed..very clean no remote for TV.. But def a head down and sleep after a long drive Breakfast though... Adequate would just about cover it... The stack em high and ship em out attitude still prevails in these establishments. Very big car park.. Site is a devil to park as its behind a service station.!! Very helpful staff
Good value with very good staff that add an extra level of welcome that you tend to get from more expensive places. Modern bathroom with excellent shower. Room spacious. Dinner good. Breakfast, as with most HIEs, was ok (dire apple juice, I’ll just have something else next time) For what I paid, no complaints. Will use again.
Great performance by the staff team over Christmas - very welcoming reception staff and helpful friendly breakfast staff with nice extra Christmas touches - Christmas card - sweeties in room and at reception and mince pies on Christmas Eve. Breakfast very good indeed for this type of hotel and better than our recollection of previous stay earlier in year. We weren't in room much other than to sleep as we were visiting family, but it was clean, comfy and quiet (despite being opposite the lift) Great job by everyone and fantastic value over the Christmas period
I visit many HI's as a ex-management grade employee of Holiday Inn. On arrival this Christmas Day evening, myself and my partner were greeted by Connor, on Reception, who was the most lovely and cheerful soul. Instantly acknowledged my Rewards Status. He took the time to explain the hotel and upon learning that i'm expected, completely exceeded and blew away expectations, reassuring me that if I needed anything at all just to call reception and they would do anything we could. Unfortunately, due to a grumpy baby bump, I believe we emerged for breakfast too late to pass our thanks onto him before he finished his shift so I do hope this reaches him. As someone that was a supervisor and duty manager at another hotel in the chain, I can tell you that this gentleman would have absolutely nailed a mystery guest and had perfect guest services skills. Amazing Stay with Amazing Staff Members.
A sod of a place to find, hiding behind a garden centre and a petrol station! Good effort though with friendly staff and a half decent bar which is handy as nothing else near. Food filling but basic although the breakfast was a step higher quality than others I have stayed in. Room very clean and well worth the money.
Large, clean room, comfortable king size bed and luxury en suite with double size shower. All the staff encountered were pleasant and helpful. The dinner menu contained the ubiquitous burgers and pizzas, but also slightly more ambitious pub food, such as lamb shank, curries and vegetarian options as well. We ate at 7.30pm and kitchen output was slow. There seemed to be only one chef and he often brought plated food to the table if the reception/bar/waiting staff were otherwise engaged, but even so the wait was not excessive and the food, when it arrived, was hot, well-presented and delicious. The free breakfast was a bonus, with a good selection of cereals etc, the only disappointment being the orange juice, which was diluted to the point of tastelessness. Overall a satisfactory experience and very good value.
