The good: clean room, friendly staff at reception, free breakfast (okay at best), not too expensive The bad: location - in the middle of nowhere, have to drive to decent dinner, as there is literally nowhere to go apart from Shell petrol station. Badly signed especially when you come from Colchester side. Poor sound insulation - constant high level of road noise from A12. Poor selection of food and drinks. The ugly: overwhelming smell of chlorine or other cleaning agent in the corridor and in the room, nearly unbearable. Flashing (damaged) led lights. Very uncomfortable "el-cheapo" matresses - hard surface spring one (not pocketed) caused back sore after a night sleep - it felt like sleeping on the floor.
I regularly visit Colchester and was looking for somewhere to stay on a regular basis but won’t stay here again. It was very noisy which I understand can’t really be helped when the hotel is full. Didn’t sleep a wink. My main complaints however were the shower didn’t drain away which always signifies that cleaning of plugs and draining etc isn’t being done. The room smelled of damp as well which I presume was the knock-on effect from the shower problem. Breakfast seating was inadequate but thanks to a really nice couple who asked if I would like to join them, I was able to be seated. Food was quite poor as well. Nice reception team but I don’t think I’ll return.
Stayed at this hotel whilst visiting family in Colchester. Very confusing directions as to how to get there and tricky to get to as off a dual carriageway with no signage. Room clean but very basic. Very small bar area where breakfast is served. Breakfast is buffet style with a choice of pastries, cereals, yogurts and a few cooked items. Very limited choice.
My husband and I have stayed here a few times over the past two years because we like everything about this hotel, EXCEPT the quality of the mattresses. They kill your back, especially if your middle aged. Maybe a young person can deal with it, but our backs got worse with their mattresses. To the hotel: Please do let us know when you have brand new mattresses and we will consider staying there again. Recently we were there and chose another hotel with much better mattresses.
Very poor check in by receptionist for a Spire Ambassador member. Wanted me to pay up front on arrival. Breakfast was ok , bacon a bit dried up. No take out coffee cups available. Not easy to find as its tuck in behind a garage on the main A12
I have chosen holiday inn express again as it was near town and near motorway. The hotel is newly refurbrished you can see that as soon as you get there. I had a double room with sofa for fairly reasonable price of £60. Large car park in front of the hotel and no need to pay. Plus a decent breakfast. The only thing I wasn't very pleased with, was waiting for a couple of minutes at reception for someone to pay me atrention. Ring a bell would be lovely if there was one. Will stay again when I'll get a chance deffinitely.
As usual I find these hotels, Holiday Inn, to be pretty good. Clean and comfortable. Food always acceptable and cooked well. Easily accessible from the road. No nighttime noise from rowdiness. Petrol station within 200yds but away from main road. Staff polite and sociable
Was a little worried about our booking as some reviews ( about the breakfast and overlooking a petrol station) made the place sound disappointing. But as we just needed a bed really ( we were here for a wedding and to visit family) and the price was good we took a chance. It was a very pleasant suprise ! Hardly any rooms would give you a good view of the petrol station ! Our room looked over fields and hardly any road noise at all. And the breakfast was more than adequate, nicely cooked, good selection and really tasty ! ( mushrooms would've been nice though !) Everywhere, including the rooms, was clean and well kept. We asked for a quiet room with the sofa bed made up for our son. Initially this didn't happen as our room was right by a lift and the sofa bed hadn't been made up (!!) but one quick call to reception and this was rectified immediately and with much apologies. Thank you to all for a lovely stay ! Xx
My wife and I stayed the one night as we were visiting Colchester Zoo. The staff were friendly on check in and the room was good with a large comfortable bed. The price was very reasonable and included breakfast. We were a bit tired from our day at the Zoo so we dined in the hotel restaurant rather than driving into Colchester. The food was good but a little pricey, which is what is to be expected in a hotel. The same went for the drinks. The breakfast the following morning was a buffet including hot food. It was nicely cooked and the staff replenished the food as it got low. Overall I would say the breakfast was excellent. I would stay at the hotel again quite happily.
Stayed on Sunday night which was a great rate just over £40 including breakfast. The hotel is beside the A12 but is set well back and you hear no road noise. The hotel was clean and well looked after, the staff were all very friendly and helpful. I did not eat in the evening but the breakfast is very good as I am not into the hot food so love the cereal, fruit and yoghurts. The wi fi was very good in my room. Was nice and close by to visit Dedham Vale and Flatford Mill. Would definitely stay here again.
