Had a really lovely afternoon tea,9 girls in our family to celebrate Mums 70th Birthday. We received a very warm welcome and the waiting staff were very polite and helpful. It made this a Lovely experience for my Mum,who loved it here! We had a walk around the lovely grounds. Thank you to all the lovely staff and making it special for my Mum,she loved the special dessert that was brought out to her, that was a nice touch.
Nice room provided at a good price en route to Italy from Stansted. Hotel in nice country setting with lovely grounds. Food in restaurant was imaginative and of good quality although this fact should not mean that portions should be so disappointingly small considering the cost. The negative for us was the failing, despite specifically checking before bed time, of the hotel to give us an alarm call as we had to arrive at the airport by half past five. Fortunately our back up alarm clock did work and w made it but there is clearly a fault in the system which needs ironing out.
Originally we booked to stay one night than we decided to go a day early and booked another night i called the hotel to let them know we will be staying 2 nights and if we could have the same room for the two nights spoke to Eliane i believe her name was book reservations she was very kind she sorted it out for us and gave us a free upgrade to executive room which was great of her and we got to hotel was great to check in helpful kind and polite staff members. Got to our room very clean comfortable beds very spacious better than the pictures lovely views from our room on to the grounds and the fountain.... very quite and peaceful place to stay
Down Hall Hotel is a beautiful listed building set in fabulous grounds which you can walk around. We stopped one night in a double room with breakfast. The room was very small although it had all the facilities you would expect of this type of establishment (tea and coffee making facilities, large TV although it blocked three quarters of the main mirror in the room, hairdryer, safe etc). Unfortunately, the safe didn't work, but a call to Reception got this fixed, and we had to call again the next morning for tea bags and coffee as there was none of either with the kettle and the cups. Also the clock didn't work. In addition, in the middle of our recent heatwave, as a listed building, there is no air conditioning, so a portable fan had to suffice, and the room was very hot. We attended a private party in one of the event rooms. The food (a barbecue cooked outside on the lawn) plus lots of salads, potatoes, chips etc., was lovely, and plentiful. Our included breakfast the following morning was buffet-style and all elements were delicious. So despite the few minor points above, we would be happy for a second visit.
Our flight had to make an emergency landing at Stansted Airport and there were no flights out until the following morning. A group of us got put up in this place and it was very nice. I only wish we had more time to explore the grounds, as it seemed like a very nice place to take a stroll and enjoy the country quiet. The beds were comfortable and breakfast buffet average. Staff did a great job dealing with a tough situation with lots of tired travelers.
Stayed here a few times now and the building, a Manor House set in amazing grounds, it has a wonderful spar and the afternoon tea is classic and what you would expect. The rooms are to such a high standard and if you book early you can get them for as little as £80 a night with breakfast, bargain!!! Staff are always pleasant and helpfully, really is a must place to stay for everything British. Please stay here once it sets the bar on other places and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed.
Deluxe room, front of the hotel, nice light large room. The selection of tea making facilities was outstanding! The hotel staff are perceptive and gave the best customer service I've received in a long time. Attention to detail and we didn't have time to try the spa facilities. Parking, setting, gardens, food, and efficient waiting staff we definitely will be back.
Truly impressive , I really can not express how surprised I was when I arrived by car to this beautiful hotel it is a master piece , if you are around and like Traditional English style this is a gem and it is quite reasonably priced , the food also is great , it is flawless ..
From the moment we arrived we knew this was going to be a great weekend. The room was beautiful along with the bathroom. The grounds were very well kept. And an afternoon drink on the Terrace was very relaxing. Dinner in the Grill Room got top marks. Plenty of lounges and bars to sit in after dinner. Very quite hotel. Staff very polite and helpful. The only downside was breakfast. The full breakfast was buffet style and cold. 3 of the offered items were not in the serving dishes and even the coffee was cold !!
One thing we cannot complain about our stay was the price - HOWEVER ...the hotel left me in two minds. On the surface it looks lovely - nice location...entrance to hotel etc...but bits (and only in my opinion I may add) looked a bit cheap. We arrived at 5pm - (you can check in from 3pm)...apparently the room 'wasn't ready' so for the first time in our many many years of travelling and staying in a vast variety of hotels we had to sit in the lobby with our cases waiting whilst they 'made sure the room was all okay' ????....after about twenty minutes we were told we could go to our rooms. We were in the old house and had to climb quite a staircase with our heavy luggage...and that was not it...we then found out we were in the attic as such and had a final and quite steep set of stairs after that - when we finally arrived at our room it was very pleasant and well furnished but no air con (???) and as we were technically in the roof...it was very warm indeed... Thank heavens for the use of a noisy rotary fan. The room however was dusty so not really sure why we were delayed as they 'made sure it was all okay'...the blind pulley was broken and the top of the shower head thick with dust (I do have a photo if needed) This room location would be no good to anyone with limited mobility as far too many steps to climb and NO LIFT !! I cannot understand how a hotel can receive high stars without air con and no lift ... As I say though lovely location...nice main hotel on the surface (not really sure of the huge annex building as it looks ugly in my opinion) and the bar areas a bit drab. Would I stay there again ??..not sure.... (oh yes and the hotel does not do itself any favours by leaving dirty plates for quite a while on the table at the top of the staircase..gets a bit smelly on a warm day)
