A love for history is just one of the many reasons that travelers are drawn to Dover. It's been the capital of Delaware since 1777, and it was established during the American War of Independence. This quaint town is nestled within a rapidly growing commercial region of the state. Aside from historic sites, there are several activities available nearby that visitors can enjoy year-round. The primary access highway to the town is US Route 13, known locally as the DuPont Highway.
There are plenty of sites and destinations located within walking distance of downtown Dover and Dover Downs. Travelers who need public transportation to get around the city can use the Dart bus transit system. The Dart system allows bus riders to access nearly every part of the city, including both sides of US Route 13. Airports located in the area include the Chandelle Estates Airport (0N4), Dover Air Force Base and Delaware Airpark.
Dover Downs, Dover International Speedway, Delaware State University, the Dover Mall and the North Dover Shopping Center are all located in close proximity, off US Route 13 on the northern part of town. The Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway runs parallel to US Route 13 and allows travelers to access Dover Air Force Base.
Visitors who love sightseeing will enjoy taking a walk to see the historic architecture located on State Street. Near the intersection with Loockerman Street, the road is composed of cobblestones, and visitors can see the historic Supreme Court building. Between Governors Avenue and Division Street, there are a series of historic Victorian-style houses that were constructed between the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The Old State House Museum building was originally constructed in 1791. The structure was eventually converted into a museum after legislative staff moved to a more modern building in 1933. The Biggs Museum of American Art provides free entry to view a personal collection of American art. The Schwartz Center for the Arts is the place to go to enjoy the symphony, local theater and historic architecture. There are more than 10 museums in the area that are nationally recognized.
The largest sporting events held in Dover are NASCAR events. The events at the Dover International Speedway draw around 150,000 racing fans to the town of 36,000 during June and September of every year. Dover Downs hosts the mile-long NASCAR track and several attractions, including a thoroughbred racetrack, casino, and several restaurants and hotels. Anyone who enjoys bird-watching or a good hike may consider visiting the Little Creek Wildlife Management Area. Other destinations that are highly popular include the Dover Skating Center and the Ballet Theatre of Dover.
Many travelers start by checking out the array of hotel rooms available at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. There are also hotels like the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn, located off the North DuPont Highway. Some of the other Dover hotels in the area that are available for travelers include the Best Western Galaxy Inn, Days Inn Dover Downtown, MainStay Suites, Super Lodge, Comfort Inn & Suites, Super 8 Dover and Dover Garden Suites. Travelers should be able to find rooms ranging from around $70 per night at local hotels to around $150 per night at Dover Downs.
Downtown Dover hosts a number of events throughout the year, including a St. Patrick's Day parade, a farmers market during the summer months, and a wine and beer festival during October. High temperatures range from the high 70s in August to the low 50s in November. Since the historic sites are always available, many travelers plan their time of visit during a music festival, NASCAR race or special event. Otherwise, you may enjoy visiting Dover during your personal favorite season of the year.
