Motor City has art, history and soul to spare

Resting on the United States-Canadian border in the northern part of the Midwest lies Detroit, Michigan. As one of the most historical cities in the country, it is well-known as the birthplace of the legendary Ford Motor Company, as well as the cradle of the iconic Motown Record label. Although Detroit has struggled through some rough times, it remains one of the most captivating visitor destinations in America.

Downtown Detroit is a great area to stay during your visit. There are plenty of hotels, venues and activities to keep the guests of Motor City entertained. Those on a budget can find hotels as low as $40 per night, but the area also offers high-end, 3- and 4-star hotels for as low as $139 per night. Downtown Detroit also allows easy access, via layout and public transport, to anywhere visitors wish to go.

Things to do
Detroit Zoo

The Detroit Zoo is an impressive place, and perfect for families who enjoy wildlife in tamer surroundings. The zoo resides on 125 acres of land, plenty of space to build naturalistic habitats for the animals who call it home. Not only are visitors able to see an assortment of animals from around the world (over 2,600 in all), there are many exclusive attractions allowing guests to interact with the on-site fauna. Whether you want to feed giraffes, or ride the historic Tauber Family Railroad, there won't be a dull moment during your visit.

Major League Sports

If you're a fan of professional sports, Detroit has a team in every major league. Motor City is home to the Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings. Each team's venue is located in the downtown area, and there are plenty of Detroit hotels to pick from if you're visiting for a sporting event. No matter what time of year you come to Detroit, check for home games during your stay to enjoy some action-packed competition.

Museums

The Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, also known as the DIA, has been around for more than a century. This historic museum is ranked as one of the best in the United States and is a must-see for both diehard art patrons and casual visitors alike. The massive complex has more than 100 different galleries, filled with multicultural arts displays spanning prehistory through modern times. In addition to the works on display, the DIA houses an auditorium and lecture hall for special events, as well as its own on-site laboratory. The museum also has an entire wing dedicated to education, providing many different activities for guests of all ages. Be sure to ask about the “Behind-the-Scenes Tour,” which allows guests to see exactly how such a grand establishment really works.

If you're looking for a museum with some more “soul,” the guests of Detroit can visit Hitsville U.S.A. Now known as the Motown Museum, visitors can see historical pieces from this legendary record label. Motown was home to timeless musicians like the Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and countless others.

Weather and climate

Be sure to check the weather report before planning your trip to Detroit. The weather can be quite erratic and hail and snow during the summer months are not uncommon. During the winter months, the temperature can drop as low as 19 degrees Fahrenheit, while an average of 13 inches of snow falls during the month of December. The summer months typically reach about 84 degrees, along with noticeable humidity. Fortunately balancing things out, the city is located right next to the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.
